large meeting of representative business
meu in the chamber of oommere Thursday
afternoon. He spoke at great length on the
proposed Nicarajuan canal and treaties
with Great Britain and other countries;
strongly emphasized the right of the United

to control isthmus transit. 'The United

The Much-Discussed Dolphin.
Washington City, June 19. Secretary
Whitney bas submitted a lengthy letter to
the attorney general with reference to the
Dolphin. He wants to know whether be
shall regard the performance of tbe
Dolphin as a failure of Mr. Koach to per
form his contract, or simply accept tbe
vessel as a bad bargain. He calls attention
to the fact that the design of tbe ship and
its engines were approved by tbe naval ad
visory board, and that the work bas been
constantly inspected by naval officers.
New York, June 14 The Dolphin was
taken to the sectional docks and pumped out
so that her bottom could be examined. It
was found that six feet of her keel had been
torn away and some of her plates knocked
out of gear. She will go into the Boston
docks for repairs. The injury occurred when
she went on a rock in the East river at tbe
foot of Eighth street while starting out on
ber recent trial up the sound. It was stoutly
denied at the time that she had been
aground.

Pueblo, Colo., June 19. At 4:30 o'clock
Wednesday afternoon tbe powder magazine
belonging to the Colorado Coal & Iron com
pany, half a mile south of tbe Bessemer
steel works, in a suburb of this city, blew
up. It contained 87,000 pounds of black
powder and a quantity of dynamite.
The explosion was caused by John
Weaver, an employe of the steel
works, shooting at a mark on the door of
tbe magazine witb a rifle. Weaver was in
stantly killed and Charles Nelson, a com
panion, fatally injured. Buildings within
radius of two miles were more or less in

The damage to buildings in the vicinity
only slight When found, both men were
almost denuded of clothing, their limbs
broken, and eyes blown out Both pre

where the magazine stood is indicated by

In his speech at the banquet in Franca
just before the sailing of the Isere,
Bartholdi said four months would be re

a shorter time. Gen. Stone is confident
that the pedestal will be ready for the

It is remarked with a considerable degree
of astonishment that M. Rous tan, tbe
French minister at Washington, has de

Cincinnati, June 19. The Enquirer's

desirable positions under the government
is that of bank examiner. Tnis office is

whenever be pleases, and when he makes s
visit tbe bank must pay him fees. There U
one assigned to each state, and it is said that
the Ohio examiner's place is worth anywhere
from $3,000 to f$,000 per year. Is
fact, however, there is no telling bow much
a bank examiner can make. As singular
as it may seem, there h not any thing lika
a rush for this position by Buckeye lmo

of as being an applicant The place is now
held bv Dick Parsons, of Cleveland. Bob
