from the Catholic priest whose story of

granarauier, Jean ru.ptiste Kiel, settled in
the northwest m 1S10, and was one of
uie nines', ot the northwest company s

born in 1817 at He a la Crosse, not far from
where the ljouis-of our day is now exploit

Canada, and in 1H.K entered tbe Hudson's
Bay ooinsny's cmphry. Religions feelings
have couU-olled the entire family at differ

novice for two years among tbe Ublato
fathers. Nine miles or so from prosperous
Winnipeg, in the little settlement of St.

Luiiis senior died in KM. Perhaps no net
of his energetic life was more characteristic
than when in the court-room of Kurt Garry,
he boldly arose and declared his half

jurisdiction of the Hudson's Bay military
anthtiritios anl one-sided judges He prac

and establislied free fur trallic.

he has chained them to him by his gift of

He is not tbe samii man in this struggle
that, he was in 1S7U. His-courage is of that
feverish kind which seeks always for excite

its fnne. The people whose cause he fights
have suffered at the hands of the provincial
government, and inch by inch their land is
slipping from them. In the struggle for
supremacy it may not lie difficult to foretell

be forgotten in tbe northwest as a leader of
