James Kevins Hyde In Chicago Herald ) The Stonewall lay at the Washington yard till the spring of 18d7, when a proposi tion was made by the commissioners of the tycoon of Jnian looking to her purchase. Our government offered her at 4Utl.Ooo. as her engine and boilers wtrj valued at f 2;X), 000 for use to the United Mates. At the re quest of the commissioners an eleven-inch gun, carriage aud equipments were supplied to her at a cost of 7,7o9.34. The guvern nieutof Japan assumed the entire repoii-sl-bility of her reaching that couutry. Lieu tenant commander, after commauder, and now i. apt ueorge H. Brown, United States navy, was given Darmi sion to take th v. el to Japan, for which hazardous and re sponsible service he was liberally compen sated by the Japanese government. Having beeu duly fitted by the navy de partment for sea, she was turned over td Capt Brown Au-r. 5, lSb7. Since the Dur- chase of the vessel by the Japanese commis sioner! a revolution had occurred in that country, and, of course, nothing was known ot this by tuo company of the vessel till she cast anchor in the port of Yokohama flying toe iiaiauese nag. CAPTURED BY REVOLUTIONISTS. At about lo a. ru. on the date mentioned Capt. brown went ashore to report his ar rival to the American minister, when ha learned to his surprise that there wai no Japanese government which our country at that time recognized. Hd returned to the ram at about 4 p. m. with an old friend. Mr. Allmau, who was conversant with the Japanese language, aud, on approaching his vessel, saw that she was surrounded by about twenty large-sized Jaanese boats, which he supposed had gathered there under the stiLiulus of curiosity. On reacbiutr the deck, however, he learned that over eighty Japiineie of bi;.;h rank, each carrying two swords, were not only on board, but claimed to be in p ts&visiou of the vessel, aud "1 must confess," write t Capt. Brown, "it did have very much that appearance." Y itb Mr. Aihuan acting as interpreter. Capt Brown called for the ranking oflicer of the fcroigners and asked why so many armed nun were on board, infonniiut him that they must leave the ship. The answer was that the vessel had been purchased by the Japanese government and that the officers bad orders from the mikado to take charge of her as soon as she arrived, and he had merely obeyed those orders. The question was discussed for some time. and while It was not denied that the vessel belonged to the Jajianese government, still he was informed that there was still due the United Suites J HHJ.OuO as a part of tho pur chase money, and that the legal transfer of the ship must tie made through the American minister, and that until the minister gave instructions to tUe contrary, the command wou'd be retained by Capt Brown. To this the question was asked: "What has the Uuited States minister to do with a vessel in- aa All air- nlllllina n BIU "J "MS Japanese nas uu saying mis J t mULIKL OAVIKbd BAKU they pointed to the colors of their country bartered hytbeLetflslatareof Illinois.) He was also directed to shoot any one interfering with the execution ot toe order. 1 he nag was in this way changed without a single Japanese omcer on board noticing the change, and they were then informed that as they werf on the deck of an American man-of-wai they must leave immediately, and if one ot thorn remained on board at sunset he would be tbrowu overboard. Thev were also in formed that, if necessary, the two Amari can men-of-war then in the same harbor would be summoned to the assistance of the Stonewall. When they were pointed out the American lis.'' at the peak, guarded by two resolute uieu on either side, with drawn re volvers, their astonishment and surprise were unbounded. THE JAPANESE YIELD. There was a great deal of excitement aud loud talking among them, and when they asked tue reason lor ttie ciiauge they were told to go to the American minister for an explanation and to leave the ship at sunset or prepare to swim or drown. Capt. Brown then went below, stationing a trusty orlicer at the skylight, who soon reported ibat the apanese were leaving the ship. On the fol lowing day this action was rejiorted to the Amorican minister, who sanctioned it and it was subsequently given the authority of law by action of congress with the approval of Secretary Seward. Capt Brown remained at Yokohama, with eight seaniau from our navy in charge of the "Stonewall" until Hay, lsCtf. At that time the Mikado's gov ernment was recognized by our own and the amount due on the payment being tendered and received the "Stonewall" was trans ferred to the Japanese. ADVICI TO KOTHIkI.
