New York, Sent. 14. An important
phase of Vreauror Jordan's effort to circu
late standard silver dollars and subsidiary
coin ha been developed. It was learned
hriaay that the supply of legal -ton.ler notes
bul l by bunks in this city has been de
crease! in the last twn weeks nearly $'.,W0,
10. This extraordinary decrease luts oc
casioned much comment amoug presidents
of banks represented' in the Clear
ing House association. The comment is not
avorable lo Treasurer Jordan's eonstruc
fion of the clause in the silver bill providing
tor the issue of silver certificates deposited
in lieu of standard silver dollars. A bank
president said Friday night that Mr. Jor-
lan s construction of the clause, while un
doubtedly within the law, was neverthe
less decidedly too rigid at this season of
the year, when the cotton an t other crops
have to be moved by money supplied by
New York banks.'
"The big banks in this city," continued
the bank president, ''are now sending south
sverv week any where from iroo.tHHI to
1500,0(10 apiece in .. HI, JO, and 50 bills.
We are compelled to do it liecnue we
haven't the silver dollars to deposit with the
sub-treasury in order to get silver certifi
cates. We will n..t handle the silver dol
lars. We will not even take advantage
:f the law which gives us the right to
make them part of our own reserve. lst
year lien, ripinuer's construction of the
clause gave us -',uoi,oot in silver certifi
cates in lieu of deosits of gold. Of course
that was au evasion of the law, but it tided
us over aud assisted southern niarchants.
and everything was serene. Now we haven't
any silver certi urates, our shim .I.- of small
bills is daily growing less, an I if some
thing Isn't done we will have to fall
back on our gold supply. Of course.
we could send them silver dollars.
but the southern merchants will
not stand the expense oi handling the
silver. Why, I know of bank president-
rha.-iug around in cabs scouring the city for
small -awlls for southern customers. Tl
sub-treasbry cannot supply us and we are
pretty fix, all became of Treasurer
Jordan's interpretation of the clause relat
ing to the issue of silver oertili.'ratos.
It is declared that a movement Is on foot
which the effeit of ilr. Jordan's order
will be annulled. Certain bank presidents
suggest that it would be possible to deptisit
gold with the sub-treasury, receive ill turn
standard silver dollars and the next day re
turn the silver dollars aud get silver certifi
cates. The gold would remain there, the
sliver certificate- would return in time, and
the force of Mr. Jordan's construction
ould to broken.

tnlgW of lbor Giving Political

Baltimore, Md., Sept. 14. A labor
lemonstration of considerable magnitude
nd political iibniflcance was held in this
ity Saturday. The all air was under the
nanagement of, and in participated by
he various local assemblies of the Knights
if Lalior. Prominent Knights of La,1 -or ay
hat much of the dissension and contention
low existing among the factions of the
Jemix'riitic party in Baltimore is due to
in attempt on tne part of the bosses to
'orce the nomination of candidates ob
jectionable to the workingmen. So far the
rgamz&tion baa been able to frustrate the
)lan8 of the political bos-.es, and this demon-
itration, while being ostensibly a celebra-
40ii of the anniversary of the famous battle
f North Point an 1 the defeat of the British
m Kept, Vi, 1SI4, is really intended, in the
ffords of a labor leader, to impress the
josses and their heelers with this exhibition
f strength, and show what the workingmen
can do in the way of electiiu; or defeating a
candidate for otii -e at the isills Tile pa-

The State of Trade.
Nkw York, Sept. 14 The condition of
general trade, as rejKii'te,! to Hradstreet's by
special telegraue, is quite as favor
thle as that mentionei at any pre
vious date within seven we.-ks past. The
steadiness and strength manifested by
the demand for dry goods and for
'oolen fabric! have encouraged many
iealers at eastern distributing centers
to look for steadiness in the movement. It
may be added that the gain in the doniand
for pig-iron tends in some degree to iuspire
the confidence manifested lu various quar
ters that the turn ill the tide has at last
taken place, and that the Increase in
the consumption of staple commodities
may preserve a steady growth. It is a
welcome si'U Mint, no b mm is
discrnible in any direction. Thu iu
creased distribution of goods is formed of a
larger nuintwr o modorute sizd orders and
in many instances of uiiexiiected duplicate
JeniAtid-. The American pig-iri.n market
i-iiriu Sales at Piew York average alsmt
5,000 toils daily. With a continuation of
this business a moderate advance is bkoly.
Ail the sjiiall railroads are at
irk, and f'JU to toll is freely quoted.
L;ax iron is in itiucn bettor request
ind the iron tra U as a whole feels the in
fluence. Eastern agents aud jobber of dry
goods continue to do a fair business, but as
retailers are tail ly well stocked up sales are
not as large as they have been. Additional
brands of brown and bleached cottons have
been advanced in price. There has been no
special change iu the wool market. Manu
factures buy with reserve, as holders are
stiff in their views aud goods have not ate
prcciattsl in price to correspond with the
gain iu the raw material. The deniaud for
woolen goods is rather better than other
wise. Hoots and slioes are iu lnucn Detter
request, but prices are low. The feat
ures of the general situation are, how
ever, not uniform. Anthracite coal,
and wheat, and Indian corn, and flour are
all suffering from extremely depressed
prices and a slack demand. Provisions aud
hog products are dull ami steady. Grocery
staples continue to move slowly, sugar be-
ing active and higher. Dairy roductsare
in slow demand.

iected to a rigid examination, but the opp
sit ton failed to show that he had a single

The Transcontinental Association.
St. Pai'l, Minn., Sept 14 The mans
gers of the lines in the Transcontinental
association met Friday and defeated a mo
tion made by the Southern and Central Pa
cific to refer the award of liereentagestothe
presidents of the dilfereut lines; also a mo
tion to have each road submit a balance
sheet of its oiierations. A resolution was
adopted that each road should make out its
claim against the Southern Pacific for the
six months from Jauuary to June, and draw
on that road for the amount Mr. Slubbs,
of ttie Central Pacific, thereupon gave
formal notice that such drafts would be
paid. The business for July, August and
September had tieen amicably settled at a
previous meeting on a different tia-is than
that claimed for the first six months of the
year under the award of percentage by
Messrs. Bogtie, Ford and Grey. The meeting
adjourned subi.-ct to ttte call of the chair
