The license fee for New York and Brooklyn is fixed in this bill at not les than (1,000, and elsewhere in tha state tout. licenses to sell malt beverages are only half those for spirits. The inten tion of the promoters of this movement it not only to bring nominee! for ths legislature to commit themselves to vote fot the high-license bill but to get high-license planks in the party platforms. The liquor trade in divided upon the question, as also are the millionaire brewers. Or. Crosby says that President Cleveland favors high license, but he has no direct assurance from him that be will enjoin it uon tbe party for this campaign. Dr. Homy Ward Heecher favors the insertion of a high license plank in the platform of tba Repub lican state convention, because, he says, ab solute prohibition is an impossibility, and high license is feasible and equitable.
