Loiing, the greatest catch of the vear. alone. and only dear, fat, stupid Mrs. Bartlett for our chaperon! There's no knowing what might have happened had it not been fer tlrat Graham girl. bewa governess to Mra Bartlett's two childivn, Tom and Tinv (the worst vouiur ones that ever breathed) and Mrs. Bartlett said that she conldn't possibly think of trust ing hei-self and precious little ones into the wilderness unl.ss her dear, faithful Helen went along. So, of course, Helen Graham went, and so did Tracy Loring, Cara Murry, tho two Avery eiils, ami their colleLTan coustas. Max and Will Collins. It was jolly fun at Hi st, for during tho journey mi tin cars Cara and I managed to secure Tracy ourselves. Then we went by stage ten miles to a lonely farmhouse a jumping "IT place," as Tracy called it hen: we were to set tho euide and boat hich were to tako us up Lake JUxwetic di'ar mo, I can never rememlier those horrid Indian names! But uever mind. - Tracy said that ho didn't just like the looks of our guide, but Cara and I thought him real romantic. His name was Francisco, and he was kind of bnganuish-looking, you know, with flash i ng black eyes, swarthy complexion, and loinr black hair. And he wore a sort of picturesque Indian costume. He talked good deal to us girls, and rolled his eyes, and made up jingling bits of poetry that didnt sound bad. Tom Bart-lelt said that he smelled of onions and poor whisky, but Tom was al ways making horrid speeches. However, t his time ho wasn't so far out of the way. for. if you'll believe it, we hadn't been camping out a week lief ore that rascally guide went ort and left us m the midst of a howling wil derness fifteen miles from any living soul look: our boat, too! And we had to make our own fires, and cook our own meals, and all that things which we had paid him to da Mrs. Bartlett is over 411. but she doesn't know a thing about housekeeping, for her husband's sister, who lives with her, sees to everything. As for the Avery girls, they never enter a kitchen, nor do Cara and I. Tracy Loring knew more than wo did, for he could make rteiicious coitee as well as broil Csli. It was lat in the afternoon, with a cold rain and wind storm coming on, so that it wouldnt have been prudent for the gentle men to undertake the long tramp through the woods back to the (iiles farm house. Cara and I felt wTetehedlv. In the first place, we were conscious of looking drabbled and shabby there's nothing like that to lower a woman s spirits, x ou see, wo had no niea of what a wild, crazy place the woods wore, and so we had worn dainty, flimsy suits, whose nimes and puffs bail soon became crushed and crumpet!. The Averys wcro in the same fiv. As for tliat Graham girl, she wore a plain, navy-blue flannel gown, with short skirt and blouse waist. We had all made fun of hei Is.-hmd her lack, butafter u day or two we were forced to acknowledge that she 1 ike,l far more dainty and tidy than our- tclves. Anyhow, Tracy Loring seemed to think her attractive, for from tho very first be treated her as an equal with Cara and me, and she laughed and talked as freely as be tiid. She never seemed to mind the least hint, not even wheu the day Cara threw out some thing aln'nit working people knowing their place. At first, though, she drew herself up Hither stati-iy (she has a tino flgurel and look'-d Cai n straight in the eyes, as if to find out wbat she meant, then a smde liegan dirnplin the corners of her mouth, and she Siij. out mischievously: When Adam delve,! and Eve span, '.vim then was Ihe f?-ritleiiian Lilt to ?t twek to tlie tiuie the guide left Wc had to have supiier, of course, but what how ve got sonic fish." said Tracy; "and I see tti:; Max lias picked some hue blackberries. 1 t-roi make the ofTee, but the rest of the cu- l:n.'i v att;iii I'll have to leave in the hands i.! von iaoic.v tih. my pK.lness gracious!" groaned Mrs. Hio-tti-tt, "I uc er txioed a meal in ail my life! I'.rond molds easily in August weather, and this is over a week old. But I can cut off the cnist and toast the inside." 'That'll be famous! I am so hungry I could cat. my boots almost! It reioices my soul to see a genuinely capable woman one with a "knack I And now, Mme, Cook, I'm at your service" with a low bow. That Graham girl didnx seem a bit impressed she I only giggled and said, coolly: --You may clean the fish, if you want to," and Tracy tng out at the rolling, waggering figure coming up the pebbly path. It was qnite evident that he was drunk unfortunately not enough to make him clumsy and helpless, but enough to be ugly ana recKiess. tlis boldness showed that he knew we were without a defender. Helen Graham stepped outside the door. one band hanging down in the folds of her gown. Her face was white, but otherwise she seemed calm. What do you want, Fmnciscof" she called out, in steady tones. He swore like a pirate as he answered: "Now, look hero, girl, you needn't put on any airs! Iheroain tno ono but that crip plod dandy in thero! I've come to have my just dues. The boas, Loring, wouldn t allow me any whisky and so 1 went off and helped myself. Now, IVe come back to settle up! Yon women have got to fork over wbat money and valyables you've got '.".and with that the ugly brute drew a step nearer. I never knew Helen Grahams eyes could Bash so. "Stand back!" she cried. She raised her right hand from the folds of her gown, and I caught a steely gleam. It was W ill s revolverl Francisco didnt relish that little shining weapon being pointed at him, and he cringed down like a whipped cur. ow, continued Helen, "you go and sit down under that tree!" H)h, I'll leave now I won't trouble you any more, bo mumbled. Do as I tell you sit down!" said she, sharp and stem, and sit down he did; and then she mounted guard over him, the pistol still in her hand. W e begged her to let him go. "rio, said she; "I can x trust, mm out; or our sight; he's mean enough to ao at most anything! He's got to stay here untu the men come and he can be placed under the arm of the law." So watch him she did all that long after noon. It was dreary waiting. Tiot until the silver sheen of the lake grew purple with tho long mountain shadows did help come, i ben, far down the lake, came a cheery " Y o-o-uet I" 1 and two boats swept around the curve. Tracy, Max, Farmer Giles and a trusty guide were in them. And scarcely had all our ex cited explanations been given, when, what do you suppose? that Graham girl fainted away as white and limp as any ordinary, wo man! There was a good deal in the expres sion of Tracy's face as he caught her in his arms, and Cara and I felt that our chances were small a man rfver looks like that un less he is holding the woman he wants for his vife! Well, to return to the prose part: wo some- low got nacK to civilization again, i oor Will was placed in the doctor's care, anil the poetical but erratic Francisco was handed over to tho fonder mercies of the constable. As for ourselves dear me! wbat with stones, mud, bri.Tsand underbrush, worms, snakes, ami tmisquitoes, to say nothing of tijtsy guides and plucky governesses we, Cara and 1. as I said before, never want to camp out again .'Chicago Tribune. "What instinct fills a fat man with lovo for a lean wife, or a short woman for a tall husband, w ho can tell Why a tow headed woman should despise "beautiful blond mustache is another hard question. But as to the progress ot man: It is certaui that we cannot make any great advance nntil we come to a better know ledge of the limitation of man. Already business men are killing themselves, on every side, because they overestimate their powers of recupera tion. Undoubtedly nature is at work in every love affair to restore a disturbed balance. Perhaps life has largely to do with magnetism. The mere presence of an objectionable man is worse than are his words or actions. If a man overwrought or overworking in the mind fall in love, he not unlikelv seeks flow of magnetism toward him that may re store his vitality.
