S me Old Tree.
The old oak ti-ee at Wa'ltham, which so ex
cellent an authority as Professor Alexander
Agassiz said wa i seven hundred years of age,
has been cut down. It has been dead for
some time, and stood in the path of modern
improvement Part of the venerable tree
will be preservtii in the library. The Croat
oak tree at Woodbridge. which was cut down
a few weeks ago, after an existence reckoned
at from fifteen hundred to two thousand
years, is to be made into chairs for the mem
bers of the Quu inipiac club, of New Haven.
This tree was doubtless the ol.kst alone the
Atlantic roust, although the authoritl-. differ
as to its age, and tho largest oak in . world.
Ouvor Wendell Holmes said the ' oe was at
least eighteen I nndred years old, and Pro

careful examination of the monster eichteen
years ago, said it could not lie less than two
thousand years old, while Professor Eaton

IH THE BPKIKO
Almost everybody wants a "spring tonic."
Here is a simple testimonial, which shows
how B. B. B. is regarded. It will knock
your malaria out and restore your appetite:
SPLENDID FOR A 8PJUKO TONIC.
Arlington, Ga., June 80, 1887. I
suffered witn malaria blood poison more
or less, all the time, and the only med
icine that done me any good is B. B. B.
It is undoubtedly the best medicine made,
and for this malarial country should be
used by every one in tbe spring, ot the
year, and as good in summer, fall and
winter as a tonic and blood purifier.
GIVES BETTER SATISFACTION.
Cadiz, Ky., July 6, 1887. Please send
me one box of Blood Balm Catarrh Snuff
bv return mail, as one of my customers is
taking B. B. B. for catarrh and wants a
box of the snuff. B. B. B. gives better
satisfaction than any medicine I ever
sold. 1 have sold ten dozen in the past
ten weeks, and it gives good satisfaction
If I don't remit all ncht for snuff, write
me. Yours, W. N. Brandon.
How Ml k Should Ba Kept.
Consumers of milk are too often indifferent
to their ways of keeping milk after it reaches
them. When delivered in cans, it is a com
mon custom of nany pooplo to draw from
the same as they need it, and oskibly a can
may not he emptied until a fresh supply is
received. As soon as the milk is brought it
should lie poured into a glass or earthenware
pitcher, and wlieu this is emptied it should
be made absolutely clan and then well aired.
Those who bava young children dependent
ujion milk food o igbt to receive a fresh sup
ply of milk both morning and night, other
wise in the warm months it is extremely lia
ble to become unwholesome. With but few
in cities is this possible, and, therefore, in
summer it will be well to scald the supply
wuon received, to prevent its lieronung sour.

IT REMOVED THE PIMPLES.
Round Mountain, Tex., March 29,
1887. A lady friend of mine has for
several years been troubled with bumps
and pimples on her face and neck, for
which she used various cosmetics in or
der to remove them and beautify and im
rove ber complexion; but those local
applications were only temporary and
left her skin in a worse condition.
I recommended an internal prepara
tion known as Botanic Blood Balm
which I have been using and selling
about two years; she used three bottles
and nearly all pimples have disappeared,
her skin is soft and smooth, and her gen
eral health much improved. She ex
presses herself much gratified, and can
recommend it to all who are thus affect
ed. Mrs 8.M. Wilson.
Not Above the Snow Liue.
A bridegroom took his wife on a tour to
Switzerland for the honeymoon, and when
there induced her to attempt with him the 1
cent of the hightst peak. The lady, who at
home had never ascended a hill higher than
church, was much alarmed, and had to be
carried by the ( uides with her eyes blind
folded, so as not t) witness the horrors of the
passage. The brid igroom walked close to her,
expostulating rescting her fears. He spoke
in "honeymooD whispers, hut the rarefac
tion of the air was such that every word was
audible. "You tald me, Leonora, that you
always felt happy, no matter where you
were, so long as you were in my company.
Thon, why are yo t not happy now" "Yes,
Charles, I did," replied she, sobbing hysteri
cally, "but 1 nevtir meant above the snow
line." Ouida's Gossip.
"Going. Going, Gone!"
The old time auctioneer is becoming a rare
character. In th larger cities of the coun
try time is too pr xtious for him to flourish
under the old stj to, where a sale was a gala
occasion, and an entire day devoted to the
disposition of a few hundred dollars' worth
of property. In the hurry and scramble of
the day a very lit :lo story telling end nou
sense goes a King vny, and the sale of thou
sands of dollars worth of pious or property
is accomplishes with a celerity and absence
of Jest and long w .nded orations which would
sadden the heart of the auctioneer of yore.
The auctioneer will exist foiTver, but the
jolly, story telling crier of publio sales will
soon be extinct. fit. Louis (Jlo'se-I'tmocrat.
A Triumph in ookry.
"Talk about cry iking birds," said George
. Cobb the other day, "when I was up in
the Red lake coun try hist year with the In
dians, they would lake the ducks we shot and
roll tiiem in clay, f mthers and all, and throw
them on the hot coals and ashes. After
awhile, wheu the c lay was baked, we would
take the bricks, or whatever you mav call
them, out, break off the clav, and, with it.
all the feathers, ami find the linked duck done
most elegantly. AU the juices were retained
and the meat was taked just alnjiit the third
of an inch, leaving the inside as tender and
delicious as any neat can be. There is no
way of cooking game equal to this. It is the
triumph of good cookery." St Paul Pioneer
