in woman's life brings peculiar
weaknesses and ailrients. Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription
brings relief and cure. It is a
powerful, invigorating, restorative
tonic and nervine. It imparts
strength to the whole system in
general, and to the uterine organs
and appendages in particular.
"Run-down," debilitated and deli

perfectly harmless. It's guaranteed
to give satisfaction in every case, or
money refunded. Nothing else does
as much. You only pay for the
good you get. Can you ask more ?

On Thursday night a lantern standing
behind the stove in the little
switch shantv near the sem
aphore in the C, R. I. & P. yards,
exploded, and the oil with which the
floor was saturated, igniting the interior
of the shantj was soon enveloped in
flames. Henry Lempfert, a switchman,
seeing the flames inside, threw open the
door, and in so doing had his face badly
scorched with the flames. Otherwise no
ssrious damago resulted.
Biver Kiplettj.
The Abner Gile passed through the
draw on her first trip up this morning.
The Pauline, neatly painted ia bright
color, passed down this morning. She
will ply in the packet trade below Mus
catine. The Diamond Jo boat to leave St.
Louis next week for the first trip north
ward will be the Libbie Conger. She is
announced to start April 7, for a trip to
Nauvoo, tbe bead of tbe rapids, but tbe
opening of the Keokuk canal yesterday
probably means that the boat will cotne
on.
A Quincy river man tells the Whig that
he does not believe the War Eagle will
ever go into commission again. She is
all gone to pieces, and it would cost more
than she is worth to put her in shape.
Her engines are good, but her hull has
been condemned ever siBce she struck
the Keokuk bridge, eight or nine years
ago, and laid on the bar above Quincy for
two years following. She will probably
be taken to St. Louis and sold to Pele
Manning, who will wreck her, and the
engines will be put into some other boat.
The Verne Swain arrived up last "eve
ning with a good passenger and freight
list. Tbe Verne is indeed a model of
beauty and convenience. She has been
thoroughly overhauled and handsomely
painted from stem to stern during tbe
past winter, and now presents a hand
some and comfortable appearance.
Through tbe courtesy of Capt. John
Streckfus an Age reporter was escorted
about the boat last evening and found
many things to admire which have be en
arranged for the convenience and com
fort of those who patronize tbe
Verne during the comic season
The boat is well equippe with big
easy chairs and camp stools, tbe interior
decorations are handsome and elaborate,
and the new stage adds much to the ap
pearance of tbe little steamer. Occupy
ing a conspicuous place in the ladies'
cabin is a life size portrait of the popular
captain, recently presented him by Clin
ton's leading artist, Gilbert L. Temple.
The genial Fuller Smith handles the wheel
and the courteous and obliging Jerry
Gladhill is on deck as first mate. Will
Knaack, who is well known to the pat
rons of the Verne, is at the clerk's desk
again this year ready to attend to tbe
wants of all and answer questions in his
usual courteous and obliging, manner,
while tbe well known and reliable George
Bake is found on duty as engineer.
