i Following is a copy of the bill to pro
vide for the weekly payment of wages by
corporations which has just been signed
by Governor Fifer, and becomes a law:
Section 1. Be it enacted by the peo
ple of the state of Illinois represented in
the general assembly, that every manu
facturing, mining, quarrjmp, lumbering,
mercantile, street, electric, and elevated
railway, telegraph, telephone, and munic
ipal corporation, and every incorporated
express company and water company,
shall pay weekly each and every employe
engaged in its business, the wages earned
by such employe to within six days of
the date of such payment; provided, how
ever, tbat at any time of payment any
employe shall be absent from his regular
place of labor he shall be entitled to said
payment at any time thereafter upon de
mand. Sec. 2. Any corporation violating any
of the provisions of this set shall be lit
ble to a penalty not exceeding f 50, and
not less than $10 for each violation, to
be paid to the people of the state, and
which may be recovered in a civil action.
Provided an action for such violation is
commenced witnin 30 days from date
(hereof: any person may bring an action
in the name of the people of the state ss
plaintiff, against any corporation which
neglects to complv with the provisions of
M his act for a period of two weeks, after
l aving been notified in writing by such
l-erson that such action wi 1 be brought.
On the trial of such action, such corpora
tion shall not be allowed to set up any
defense for a failure to pay weekly any
employe engaged in its business the
wages earned by such employe to
within six days of tbe date of such
payment, otber than a valid assign
n ent of such wages, or a valid set oS
against tbe same, or the absence of such
employe from his regular place of labor
at the time of payment of the wages so
etrned by him, or a breach of contract
by such employe or a denial of the em
ployment. No assignment of future
wges payable weekly under the provisi
ioas of this act shall be valid if made to
the corporation from whom such wages
ar to become due, or to any person on
btbaltof such corporation, or if m .de or
procured to be nude to any person for
tin purpose of relieving such corporation
from the obligations to pay weekly under
tbi! provisions of this act. Nor shall any
jf said corporations require an? arjree
nit nt from any employe to accept wages
t other periods tban as provided in sec
tion 1 of this act, as a condition of em
plfjment .
Sec. 3- The penalties herein pro
viced may be recovered in any court hav
inr civil jurisdiction by such in the name
of tbe person bringing the same.

Fort Byron, now engaged in the same
business at Milner, Arkansas, is in tbe

Mitchell & Lynde's new block. The otber

latter part of the week.
Aichie Wicks, fcr sometime collector
for tne tri-city telephone exchange, and
now superintendent of the telephone com
pany at Alton, met with a serious acci
dent there yesterday. He was on a tele
(boDepole when it fell to the ground. It
is not known just how he is irjured but
a telt gram staled tbat it was serious.
A. Reid McCollough, a resident of
Daveaport since 1SC0, and one of Scott
county's volunteers in tbe late war, has
reluctantly decided to locate permanently
in Chicago and left for there last nigbt
with his family, having sent his household
u'Dodf- in before. Mr. McCollough and
hia family will be gretlv missed by their
many friends. The G. A. R. boys will
rnifs leid on Decoration day. We wish

O-cau-Kee tribe, No. 15, Improved
Order of Red Men, had an important and
iiittre ;ting meeting last evening and there
ns consequently a large attendance.
After the regular business of the evening
bid hi en disposed of the braves were sur
prised by their squaws with baskets, who
came laden for a feast, and also accom
panied by musicians for a friendly dance
about t he camp fire . The occasion proved
one of much happiness and will not soon
be f on;otten .
Hue linger Bros., of Davenport, have
issued i valuable souvenir of the three
cities in tbe way of a photographic album
and deinptive sketch. The book, which
is nicelr covered, contains photographic
bird's-eye views of each of the three cit
ies, thi principal buildings, business
blocks ind residences of each ; also of
Rock It land arsenal and Black Hawk's
tower, together with descriptive sketches
of each city. In compiling the work, the
Messrs. Huebinger have combined artis
tic meri: aa well as much care to secure
accuracy, both in the views and in the
descript ve sketches. The book la some
thing of which the tri-cities should be
proud. It is on sale at Kingsbury A
Son's in Rock Island.
