Very little has been done on tbe T. M.
C. A. building canvass during tbe past
few weeks, but tbe end in view has not
been lost eight of. A new effort will be
made at once to secure tbe additional
amount needed. $500 having juet been
pledged by the Ladies' Auxiliary on con
dition that the remaining $1,200 be se
cured by September 1. There should be
no difficulty whatever in securing this
amount, and there will be none it all who
are interested in tbe welfare of the city
will lend a hand. Fpeaking of the 9160,
000 building cow nearing completion in
Hartford, Conn., the Hartford Post says:

M. C Woodruff, a painter living on
Fifth street near Iowa, in Davenport, had
a c'.oee call from death on Wednesday
evening. He reached home very much
exhausted and sat down in a rocking
chair and in a few minutes he became un
conscious. His wife summoned htlp and
got him to bed and rent for a pbyeician.
He had a number of convulsions which
left him very weak. The attending phy
sician did all in his power for hire but in
a short time he, apparently, breathed his
last. The physician pronounced him
dead and was just going to leave when a
faint motion of tbe heart was detected.
He gradually came to and next morning
was able to eat a light breakfast. He is
still very weak, but will soon be able to

strels appear at Harper's theatre tonight.
There was an outpouring of people re
sembling a cloud burst at the Perkins
Grand last evening to see Richards &
Pringle's Georgia Minstrels Shortly
after 7 o'clock the people began to fl ck
toward the opera house, and before 8
the crowding, pushing throng at tbe doors
were told that no more tickets would be
sold. Tbe minstrels gave an excellent
performance, free from tbe lower order of
jokes, and the audience were well satis
fied with the performance. Billy Ker
sands was, as usual, a (mill army in him
self, and received loud encores Spring

for the month of August for a period uf
21 years which is worthy of preservation
for comparison duriDg the coming month.
The mean temperature was 71; the hot
est August that of 1881. with an average
of 77; tbe coolest was that of 1863. with
an average of 68. Tbe highest tempera
ture during August was 93 on the 3d.
1887; tbe lowest was 48 on tbe Sib, 1884.
