A Trrnwndon) Outpouring of l'eople That
the Wagner Opera House AVould not
Contain The Tariff Reform Orator
Talks on the Square The Torchlight
t rrocesston - The Stevenson Club and
Other Organizations In Line. Notes.
Moline did herself proud ia honor of
Congressman William M. Sprlogcr last
night. It was the great rally of the
campaign thus far in either oily, and prob
ably the largest outpuring of people ever
seen ia Moline at a political meeting of
any kind. Early in the evening
it became apparent that
the Wagner Opera house would not begin
to accommodate the crowds, and Chair
man Max Kohn of the Moline city com
mittee determined with Mr. Springer's
consent to have the mee'.inp on Market
tquare which the hall faces. There the
people assembled early in tho evening,
and awaited the arrival of the torchlight
procession which was to include the
marching clubs from Rock Island and
Davenport as well as Moline. Pending
the arrival of the the parade, the Moline
Olee club rendered a number of enter
taining campaign songs.
On Market Square.
The crowd on Market Square was al
ready great at 9 o'clock, whea the pro
cession arrived, and with the reinforce
ment of the marching clubs ani the
throngs which had assembled along the
streets and which followed the proces
sion, there was assembled a gthcrini; of
people that few speakers view from the
stump. The procession formed on Third
avenue and Fifth street, where the Itock
Island club and the Horace Bjies club o f
Davenport, which joined them here, were
conveyed by special trains of street
cars. The column was made
up as quickly as possible, some delay be
ins occasioned by the clubs from this city
waiting for the Boies club from Daven
port, the Stevenson club, which made its
first appearance last night, coming out
with silk hats and tan colored coa's and
carrying ernes, 100 strong, and encircling
the business portion of the city hoaded
by Bleuer's band, before going to Mo
line. The club presented a fiia appear
ance and elicited the plaudits of thou
sands of people here, which were afur
ward repeated in Moline. It ii un
doubtedly the best looking politi
cal club that has ever turned
out in the three cities, a fiae looking
body of men indeed, and every one a
voter. , .
The column in Moline was formed un
der the direction of Westley Giles, mar
shal, and presented a gorgeous sight as it
moved east oc Third avenue. It in
eluded Otto's band, the Ilorace Boies
club of Davenport with 80 men. Bleuer's
band, the Stevenson club of Rock IsUnd
with 100 men, the Seventh ward demo
cratic club of this city, the L:ght Gurd
band, Cable Flambeau club and a caval
cade of 100 men. The procession hid
some difficulty in getting through the
crowds that lined the street, and after
pissing through Third avenue wheeled
into Market square.
Mr. Springer's Address.
Market Square was literally jammrd
with people, and Mr. Springer spoke
from a stand erected at the north end of
the trquare, the dense crowd being
massed about the stand, a large number
of seats having been previously provided
back of which the people stood up.
After bein i tr ducei by Peter
K .del, who ' piesiJeJ, and who
made a " splendid a 'die??, be
bsgtn his address by extending thanks
to the Horace Boies' club of Davenport
fjr its attendance, complimenting it
upon its appearance, and said that the
demccrats of Illinois were looking 'o
Iowa to repeat that recent granJ victory
of democracy, and from all appearances
the speaker said it would. lie next ex
tended warm thanks to the democrats of
Rock Island and Moline, and spoke of
the latter as having been the stronghold
of republicanism, adding, however, that
it looked as though everyone was a dem
ocrat at present. The speaker said that
this had been appropriately termed a
campaign of education, and as he had
been a school teacher in his younger
days, be naturally took to it very freely,
being, he said, a return to his first love.
A Campaign of Education.
He said as this was an educational
campaign there could be no occasion for
mud slinging and personal abuse. Both
parties should meet and discuss the is
sues entering into this campaign in a
friendly manner. Both the candidates
had each served one term or nearly so.
and there was no reason why any repub
lican who believed in the principles of re
publicanism should not vote for Benja
min Harrison, likewisa the same was
true of G rover Cleveland, whose wise ad
ministration was so regarded by every cit
izen irrespective of politics that he would
beyond a doubt go in by a handsome ma'
jority again this fall. On account of
the lateness of the hour he said bis re
