'A Honololo Ore. a.
A naval officer's wife recently home from
Honolulu descants with affection upon the
delightful costume in which every woman
lives there until late afternoon.
"It is really," she says, "a national gown
called the holloku, and is a cross between
a tea Rown and a wrapper. It is long and
flowinjs. and attached to a yoke something
like a Mother Hubbard gown, and is beau
tifully embroidered. Everybody who goes
there finds its value at once, and so long
as you stay you wear the kowu daily,
bringiiii; one or two away with you in the
vague hope that you can use it in America.
ISut you can't, for the moment yon get it
away from its natural environment it is
entirely too undress and informal for any
wear outside of your own room, which
only emphasizes how completely we are
slaves to custom in Honolulu as well as in
New York. New York Times.
Drug for Skin IH.ea.es.
The drugs used for skin diseases are
numerous, and it is through their combi
nations that the patent skin remedies are
generally made. None of the newer drugs
can excel iodoform, which is as old as the
hills for skin complaints. Thilanio has but
recently been used for skin diseases, and
for certain forms of skin eruption it has
been found valuable. Fuchsine is em
ployed for ulcers, moist eczema of the
hands and lupus. Creoline is a powerful
skin drug, but its odor is againt its gen
eral use.
All of these drugs are new, and yet they
have stood severe tests in experiments, and
dermatologists are now using them gener
ally. It is from these pure drugs, or their
combinations, that skin diseases are cured,
and they form the basis of hundreds of
scalp and skin remedies placed upon the
market. Yankee Blade.
Muscular Contraction l ruler Pressure.
As regards the effects of high pressures
upon muscular contraction, nervous con
duction, the circulation of the blood and
respiration. Professor Reycaud has some
remarkable restilts to record. The experi
ments were made by means of apparatus
specially constructed by him to resist
great pressures ami permit their effects to
be watched. In the result it was found
that the power of muscular contraction is
diminished as the pressure increases up to
400 atmospheres, when it ceases altogether,
while the latent period is increased, tet
anus is more easily induced, and the
whole tissues become rigid and brittle.

The amount of land in the United States
that is owned by members of the house of

that America is owned by Americans.
The aggregate shows the immense total

all of Ireland, 2.000.0U0 more than all of
Scotland and more than half as much as

A startling variation of the snake story
