HERE'S A NEW GAME.
It Is Called Oona- and Is Very Popu
lar on the Other Side.
Oona is a new game, specially de
Biffned for use on small lawns or
places where space is too restricted
to allow of lawn, tennis or other pas
times which require a larjre area. It
can also be played as an indoor game,
the legs of the table being shod with
soft material to prevent injury to any
polished surface it may stand upon.
Any number of players can partici
pate, either forming sides or plaving
independently. The table is made of
polished wood, about two feet six
inches in diameter, and ordinary
lawn tennis balls are used.
The following are the principal
rules of the game.
1. Choose the ord.'r of tlir nlnr Tf
more than two, fix whether the play
ers t.e partners or not. and decide the
number of balls (not ex w,linr slvt
each is to throw.
. The first plaver bowl
balls up the incline of the tower in the
center 01 t:ie tali.e. when it will strike
off at a tanirent. and. if sn,.fnl
lodge in one of the holes. The act of
doing so will release the correspond
ing flag, ivuich Will lU- U 1. lhe nl.irpr
adding the number it, lli'nr tj- iii
score.
3. Ralls which co off the. tnbl
return down the incline are dead.
t. When the nlaver has nl-iv.l nil
his balls, the next in rotation follows
in like manner.
5. The game is usnallr nv i nnimc
but this can be varied to" suit the taste
or convenience of the players.
IT WAS DEAD ECONOMY.
The Way That a C olored Man Wanted to
Work the -Kllea En."
An excursion from Hiinii.im
Montgomery was run the fit lnr iHlTT
and a negro man appeared at the
ticket office in the depot and pur
chased a ticket for himself Tln.n 1,
said to the ticket agent:
-Ioss, I want "nother
'scursion ticket for a corpse."
inc agent on.-ned his eves in nti,.
ishment. An excursion tit-Vet f.r a
corpse was something new to him,
even with his varied experience.
The nec-ro exclaim.!- .,

.Mom-oincrr and let de family view
the 'mains, and den bring "e:n back to
Rirmingham an.l bury "em. Dis will
be a heap cheaper den fur de fambly
to cum up here."
The agent saw at onee that this was
a great stroke of economy and enter
prise on the part of the negro. There
were probably a dozen members of
the famiij-, and tickets for them to
Rirmingham and b:iard while there
would be quite expensive. The corpse
could get the benefit of excursion
rates to Montgomery and would pay
no board while there. Thus the negro
subserved the ends of economy and
preserved his respect for the grief of
family at the same time.
Mem. for the Doctors.
A Philadelphia cable car conductor
has been sent to a hospital to be cured
of what is calleJ a "bell-arm." The
patient was a conductor on the for
ward car of a train of three,-and the
habit of listening for the sharp ring of
the beil on the rear car, followed by
the mechanical m ovement of the arm
toward his own bell stra;), has de
veloped the strange ailment. The
muscular movement has become a sec
ond nature to him. and his arm actu
ally acts more quickly thau his brain.
As a result the action has become in
voluntary, and whenever he hears a
bell of any kind his arm at once shoots
upward toward an imaginary bell
cord. Subarhnn Humor.
The citizens of the suburbs of an
Eastern city went in a body to the
mayor to protest against the erection
of a hospital for contagious diseases
which it had been proposed to erect in
their midst, as it were.
"Wc would not care, your honor,"
said the spokesman in conclusion, "but
we and our families are not detec
tives." "What do you mean by that?" in
quired the mayor, in astonish. iient
"I mean, your honor, that we are
liable to catch something." nd t ie
mayor was greatly pleased by tills evi
dence of the development of suburuau
humor.
Phonograph mid Itell.
Nothing that the phonograph d ies
u more won.terful than its rendr.i n
of the sound of a bell. Although the
Westminster bells were probably the
first to have their t ines recorded in
Great Rrilain. the experiment has
been tried here. The writer of Jh:s
paragraph assisted in what was th
first introduction of the phonograph
to a big bell. The instrument was
taken into the tower, and just as the
great bell tolled twelve the cylinder
was set going. The wonderful tidclitv
with which the swiftly revolving cyl
inder reproduced the slow and meas
ured tones of the big bell was little
short of marvellous.
