KILLED IN A BAUXIO.
A MrmiRer ha* HI* Xwk Brskn at
Arnold'*-Arreal of Ike Inmate* of
the lloiKie.
Probably every man in the city has
heard of "'Arnold's"—a placc a quarter
of a mile north-east of old Camp Mc
Clellan. Simon Arnold opened the
house in 18(54 as a saloon, and until the
past, eighteen months it has had as
good a reputation as any suburban sa
loon. ltut for a year or more it has
been a notorious house of ill-fame—a
resort for the worst characters that in
fest a city. It is a wonderthatno mur
der has occurred at Arnold's. There
have been plenty of bloody fights
there. A man died tlioro yesterday
under peculiar circumstances.
Las Saturday, a rail's crew was paid
off here, and one of the number, nam
ed Edward Lily, went straight ont to
Arnold'#. Besides Arnold's wife, three
other wontcn staved at the place.—
From Saturday till Tuesday tho man
drank quite freely, spending his mon
ey as if lie owned a goldmine. Be
tween nine and ten oVlock Tuesday
forenoon, Lity took a pitcher for the
purpose of going down a flight of ten
steps, into a cellar to draw some beer.
He had just put his foot on tho third
step, when a woman accosted him he
turned to talk to her, attempted to step
backwarks, lost his balance, and fell
prone to the bottom, his head striking
against an ice box. and his body liter
ally "doubling up" in the narrow place
iii which lie landed. As soon as possi
ble, Arnold picked him up and carried
him to his room. Dr. Middleton was
sent for, and he went out and found
that the man's neck was broken. He
was still living, though both arms were
paralyzed. He lingered in this ftate
until between ten and eleven o'clock
yesterday forenoon, when he died.
Lily's people live in St. Louis. Ti
dings of his death were sent to his
parents by telegraph yesterday after
noon.
But Arnold's troubles commenced
in the afternoon. The Grand Jury
had indicted him for keeping a house
of ill-fame, and late yesterday after
toon Sheriff T,conard wont out and ar
rested Arnold. Three females living
in the house—"Big Ingnn," Mrs. West
and a mere girl named Amanda Dnnn,
whose people live in Ottawa—were ar
rested by the police—and all wcro
brought to the jail.
Lily had two dollars and some val
ueless papers in his possession when
he died—and this was all that was
left of his pay for a season's work.—
Davenport Qrtz.
And such is the end of thousands of
others who visit such places and indulge
courses Of sin. Young men, bewaro!
you know not how soon yon may meet
with a like unhappy fate.
