One Hundred Thousand Visitors Expected V* ^The National Reunion Conven tion of the Benevolent an€ Pro tective Order of Elks which has been secured for Atlantic City by the enterprising spirit that gov erns the local lodge will probably have the largest attendance of any convention that has ever congre gated in our resort. Sufficient pledges have already been ob tauied from the fifteen hundred ; Elk Lodges throughout the United States to make it safe to assume that more than one hundred thou sand visitors will bfe brought to our shores by this momentous event. As the convention is of four days’ duration, the law of aver age would put the minimum suSfi that will be expended here per capita at $20 and this is a very modest estimate, and would mean that the antlered herd will de posit fully two million dollars in the coffers of our banks as a re sult of their sojourn in Atlantic City. Even in these times, two million dollars mean a lot of money and the magnitude of this expenditure makes the occasion one of great general interest to every citizen of the City and the County, for every man who gains his livelihood within the confines of Atlantic County will undoubt edly be benefited directly or in directly irrespective of the class of business that he may be en gaged in. Every field of endeavor will be stimulated and aided by- so vast a sum of money extraneously spent within our ftiidst. For after all, it is money that will be gained beyond the normal busi ness of the resort. It comes early in the summer without interfer ing with the regular routine of the summer visitors, and that is how it will prove to be a great aux iliary. Thus this Elks Convention has ceased to be a matter of the handful of men that comprise the j membership of number 276, the local lodge of the fraternity. Not one percent of the citizenship of Atlantic County is represented in the membership list' of the At lantic City Elks Lodge. The National Convention is an affair of the community at large. It belongs to Atlantic City and Atlantic County. It is part and parcel of the welfare of each in dividual that labors within *our borders. It is not an Elk’s affair. It is too big . and too broad to be long to any particular fraternity. It is an affair of Atlantic City and go must be treated from every ri^le. When we consider that our Sister City, Philadelphia, has ap propriated the sum of $75,000 to defray the expenses of welcoming the Elks as they pass through Philadelphia on their way to At lantic City it may be realized what the Quinary outlay will be to us here to cover only the super ficial expenses of caring for so vast aii amount of people. There must be decorations. There must be bands. There must be individual entertainment of high officers. There must be a collective entertainment of the herds who will have amusement of some nature at their disposal dur ing every moment of their visit here. Piers must be engaged, rolling chairs secured, auto mobiles and a hundred and one pother things too numerous to ' mention. The mumerable entertainments of the resort are so vast that we have a great advantage over other ' cities that are not so bountifully 'blessed as we are, and the demand j of the committee for funds is only about one-half the sum that Phila delphia has already appropriated to entertain the Elks on their i flight through the . City of i Brotherly Love. The Executive Committee, headed' by Grand j Esquire Harry Bacharach, David ! C. Heed, Lewis Steinbricker, Elias j Rosenbaum, Silas Shoemaker and j a number of other of our most | prominent citizens, has wisely de- J cided that there will be only one request made for contributions and that will be a drive which will take place next month. These long headed men have ■ placed their positive negative upon souvenir programs, special newspaper editions, special maga zine editions, in fact anything and everything appertaining to ad vertising which formerly mulcted our citizens even after they had made their regular contributions. Nothing of this nature will be per mitted or receive the sanction of the Executive Committee which intends to publish its own pro gram at its own expense without advertising matter of any kind., Thus the citizens having the best interests of the resort at heart may give freely and bountifully during the one drive, knowing full well that it is the only contribu tion that will be asked of them. Be it clearly understood thdt it is not a contribution to the Elks which they are going to donate. They are giving for the welfare of Atlantic City, most of all for their own welfare, for the man does not live that will not be benefited by this, the largest convention that has ever visited Atlantic City. Let no man hesitate to contribute as liberally as his ability to give, will allow and what is more, not only give freely but give quickly, for it is not at all improbable that the Elks who are fond of Atlantic City will decide during the com ing convention to make our wonderful resort the permanent annual meeting place of their fraternity. Thus when they do come this year, let us make them happy and comfortable. Let us give them the best there is in us and above and beyond everything, help the Finance Committee by a liberal, large and prompt contribution. Real Estate Transfers VENTNOR John O. Dock Electrician CONTRACTING and JOBBING 113 N. Dor*et Arenas Better Homes for' Better Citizens Interior Fittings and Furniture Mark and Express the Personality and Ideals of Owners ^ — By T. C. Mehan Homemakers, men and women, almost invariably are harassed by a sense of their own limitations in the matter of selecting and ar ranging household furnishings. They usually are confused by a medley of suggestions from friends and acquaintances, and appalled by various proclamations relating to so-called infallible standards in household decora tion. Under circumstances such as these it is always well to begin with the question of requirements. There is no escape from this ques tion where a human habitation comes under discussion. It enters into consideration whether the house is to be used by' a single family, whether it is a tenement, a studio building, a hut in the wilderness or a cottage in city, town or country. Personal Touch Rules It is apparent that to make the home successful it is essential to know the needs of those who are to dwell in it, their circumstances and the relation they bear to the community in which they live. There is more than a little truth in the statement that a man’s duties to himself must guide him on one side and his obligations to his neighbor on the other. These he must balance. There appears little room for I question but that the responsi bility of comprehending and re specting the domestic and social requirements rests for the most part upon the women. To be suc cessful as their interpreter the housewife must make them a par ticular study. - vf Smith. Cons., $100, etc. S. E. corner of Ventnor Parkway and Quincy ave.; 90x80.25 ft. The degree of felicity with which these provisions are made marks the excellence of one deco rator over another. In all in stances there must be a thorongh \ knowledge and observance of propriety and proportion. Social Nature Rules Man, whether it be his indi vidual desire or not, is a social being. He cannot live by himself alone. It stands to reason, there fore, that he should not build or decorate his home without con sideration of his fellow beings. By making liis own life full he equips himself for enriching that of others. The true spirit of de coration leaves none of these ques tions neglected. The eternal quest of the home lover should be for th§ best means by which these various requirements can be met. The one thought to be constantly borne in mind is, that it. is the business of all who are interested in the decoration of homes, whether simple or elaborate, to arrange and rearrange until de sired results be obtained. Wall papers, curtains, draperies, rugs, pictures and furniture are noth ing more nor less than the tools whereby the decorator obtains the atmosphere he desires.
