Real harm is being done by the flood of complaints and reports of dog attacks which \ are going the rounds by word of mouth here in the city and by newspaper report outside. Either the dogs or the reporters must be muzzled unless this form of real injury to the resort is to continue. Every growing city appears to have about the same line of diffi culty in settling its dog question. Those who demand some curb on dog wanderings, activity and at tack usually are met with bitter denunciation from others who insist that they “love dogs,” without realizing that they mean they really are fond of one par ticular dog. A policeman who clubs a vicious prisoner into sub mission or shoots him full of necessary holes is hailed as a Jhero; while the same policeman who subdues a vicious dog by force and arms is likely to incur a lot of enmities and be pointed out for years as a brute who used I* his authority and his club on a fji poor dumb animal. Allowing the individual and collective Ventnor dog all his lauded virtues as a family friend, a companion for the children and . an always able and willing guard of the home, the same dog ap pears to overstep his place in the scheme of living when he bites or menaces the ordinary citizen who is going his own peaceful way attending to his own business. And if it is necessary to muzzle | every unleashed dog in the re — sort to prevent such menace or such biting, the muzzling should be undertaken and carried out -without fear or favor to either tfog or owner. ' -« PARKING Now at the opening of the motoring season, and before some fatality lays its blight on the good name of Ventnor City and its officials, is the right and proper time to enforce the laws against night parking of cars on Ventnor streets. If there is lack of properly drastic pro vision against parking in state and city laws, pass some meas ■ ures that will give full authority to break up this highly danger ous practice. Other cities and towns have waited to pass proper anti-parking laws or to enforce such laws until after the matter has bepn drawn to attention by some accident -of tragic note. It would be well for Ventnor to act before such mishap takes place here. There is no boost for the ga rage man in this bit of editorial! advice and admonition against j allowing street parking of motor I Ask Balaam—He Knows The Atlantic City Press has refused to accept advertising copy containing the name of the Ventnor News. Thereby the Atlantic City Press has nipped in the bud a project on the part of the new management of the Ventnor News for the taking of extensive paid newspaper space in Atlantic City for booming both this fine resort and the local weekly which represents Ventnor and its people. The reason given by the Press is interesting. “The directors of the Press-Union Company have decided,” it says, “to accept no advertising of competitors in the publishing field.” Which reminds of a rather recrepit and somewhat threadbare Chauncey Depew tale which still retainss a charm of application. Uncle Mose, shuffling along the village street, was accosted by a white stranger. “Uncle, can you change me a twenty-dollar bill?” was the demand. Uncle Mose scratched his wooly head; then a smile lit up his countenance. “Cunnel, no-sah,” said Uncle Mose. “But, Cunnel, I sure do thank you for de compliment.” And we thank the Atlantic City Press for the compliment. But three weeks of our step-fathership, as we might say, and the'lowly little Ventnor weekly is considered a competitor of the great A. P. and ABC and otherwise alphabetical palladium of the Atlantic City liberties. We were pleased when the Press recognized ns by using a headline resembling our name for the Ventnor news section which has blossomed forth since the advent of the Amusement Publishing Company as new owners of the Ventnor News. Not yet can we change the Press’s metaphorical twenty-dollar bill; we are not rich and great enough. But we surely do thank them for the compliment. With us of the Ventnor News there is nothing but a smile in the entire business. Surely somebody must take themselves seriously in this old world; it might as well be the “Board of Directors” of the Atlantic City Press. For us there is nothing left except to do our little best to please and entertain and make the Ventnor News a clean and interesting and wholesome home paper. That shall be our aim.' But it’s hard to get away from the tremendously complimentary fact that the great and mighty Atlantic City Press considers us a competitor. Three weeks ago we entered the newspaper field in fear and trembling hoping against hope that we might make our news paper sin of omission rather than one of commission which might draw upon us the fire of the editorial heavies. And we went along so quietly. True, there was a feeling of deep satisfaction when we could report, that our circulation had grown ten-fojd; we were really happy when we received assurance that the Ventnor News was being read in every home below Jackson Avenue and in hundreds if not thousands of homes above that city-dividing line. We liked it a lot when the finest people in Ventnor and Atlantic City volunteered their praise of our little achievement and their belief in our greater promise. And we of the Ventnor News hope that one open declaration of the Press that we really are a competitor does not make us over proud; we shall try in every possible way to continue in a deep editorial humility which will secure for us that great final reward which is promised the meek and lowly. Still it is difficult completely to curb our pride.- We find it hard to forbear announcement that this week begins in the Ventnor News a series of brilliant letters from Charlie Chaplin detailing his observations during his European trip. We almost hate to make public the fact that Anne Rittenhouse, she of the literary leadership among women who write for women, hereafter will present for Ventnor News readers the very latest and finest about styles. We regret the almost absolute necessity of again calling attention to the members of the staff of the Ventnor News and their fully proved excellencies in their several writing lines. | Otherwise, we are in full content. We cannot forbear believing that the promise and appearance of the new Ventnor News in the field had at least something to do with the sudden cessation of news neglect of Ventnor, left by our esteemed contemporaries to fight alone while she was in her swaddling clothes, but now a centre of full interest since she has grown beyond the need. We are only sorry that there was not an earlier “competitor” who could have aroused such interest in years agone. And we shall “continue on.” Still praying for full spirit of humility we shall place our faith in those Ventnor folk whose loyalty to the former Ventnor News we hope to make over into real enthusiasm for the new. Of ourselves, we have no intention of classifying as competitors the Atlantic City Press and the Ventnor News And, again, we, are bound to thank that great and pewerful journal for the compliment which they have paid. cars to continue. Rather, it is a matter of public policy which is of enough importance to de mand immediate attention. With assured early arrival of many newcomers in Ventnor it is well that there should be thorough understanding that this resort will not allow cars without lights to be parked on main or side ave-1 nues where they are a constant and serious menace to every driver who may pass that way. At its best, street parking is only a matter of accommodation to those who lack the foresight to secure places in which they may store their cars. At its worst it admits of the placing of scores if not hundreds of dan gerous, unlighted - obstructions right in the line of traffic, blocks entrance and egress of machines and forces work upon police and other officials who hare enough to do without being compelled to add to their duties the watch and ward over cars owned by those who are too careless or too parsimonious to lodge their ma chines in places made and kept open for their accommodation. Street parking should be broken up; and broken up before it be comes too much of a fixed habit with either residents or visitors. Mutual Admiration Society By Charles Scheuer The dedication of a book by John Davidson to his enemy, runs thus: Unwilling Friend, let not thy spite abate, Help me with scorn, and strengthen me with hate. The general tendency to be rate the man of superior talent would seem to indicate that dis paragement has some sort of good in it. Possibly it is the gover nor that keeps things from going too fast. Is it not probable that disparagement is a part of the Opposition of Forces that holds the balance true? But almost everything can be overdone; and the fact remains that without encouragement and faith the stoutest heart will in time grow faint and doubt itself. It hears the yelping of the pack, and there creeps in the question: “What if they are right?” Then comes the longing and the, neces sity for the word of praise, the clasp of a kindly hand, and the look that reassures. Occasionally the undiscerning make remarks, slightly touched with muriatic acid, concerning the ancient and honorable cult known as the Mutual Admiration Society. My firm belief is, that no man ever did or can do a great work alone—he must be backed up by the Mutual Admir ation Society. It may be a very small Society—in truth, I have known Chapters where there were only two members, but there was such trust, such faith, such mutual admiration, that an atmo sphere was formed wherein great work was done. In Galilee even the Son of God could do no great work, on ac count of the unbelief of the people. "Fellowship is heaven and lack of fellowship is hell,” said William Morris. And he had known both. Some one must believe in you. And through touching finger tips with this Some One we may get in the circuit, and thus reach out to all. Self-Reliance is very excellent, but as for independ ence, there is no such thing. We are a part of the great Universal Life; and sar one must win ap proval from himself, so he must receive corroboration from oth ers; having this approval from the Elect Few, thfe opinions of the many matter little.
