Women Plan New Hospital
(Continued from page 1)
both from the standpoint of re
lief for those who suffer and as
an asset for those seeking health
and in stages of convalescence.
“We have thoroughly can
vassed the situation and are now
sure that Ventnor should have a
hospital of its own,” said Mrs.
Mahn. “There can be no real
objection to such an institution
built along lines of modern ar
chitectural beauty and occupying
a plot large enough to remove it
from too close proximity to pri
vate cottages.
“We believe that a hospital
such as we propose could take
care of the entire lower end of
Absecon Island from Jackson
Avenue to Longport. Carried out
as we have planned, the institu
tion could be made one of the
most noted in the country. Then
we believe that such a hospital
would be a great attraction to
the wealthy folk of inland cities
who would be glad to come to
this section for convalescence if
they were assured of the finest
in hospital accommodations.”
Mrs. Mahn also is a strong sup
porter of the idea of making the
new institution a “Memorial Hos
pital.” “When people under
stand that they are to be encour
aged to endow rooms or beds as
memorials it has,a tendency to
give great aid to that form of
giving,” she said. “We of the
Ambler Hospital already have
been given evidence of the wis
dom of allowing and encouraging
in memoriam and it would be the
same here. We who are filled
with enthusiasm for the Ventnor
Memorial Hospital project really
believe that no better memorial
could be evolved for our boys who
fought in the Great War than a
splendid hospital to stand for all
time as an institution for relief
of suffering.”
Mrs. Mahn and the ladies who
are assisting her in planning and
carrying out the Ventnor Me
morial Hospital movement wish
it understood that the officers of
the Colony Club named as tem
porary directors of the project
some time ago realiy are tem
porary. “There has been no at
tempt on the part of anybody to
close the offices or directorship
of the hospital,” declared Mrs. j
Mahn. “W e who were named j
merely took charge for the time j
being and the real election for
officials of the hospital will not
take place until we have enlisted
a number of prominent men and
women of Ventnor in the cause.
For myself, I shall insist on being
allowed to occupy a simply ad
visory position and will positive
ly refuse to take a permanent
chairmanship when we are'ready
to name permanent officers.”
So it is up to Ventnor people
to support the Ventnor Hospital
project to the best of their abil
ity. "'“Just a bit of support from
each person in Ventnor and we
could buy a lot and start the nu
cleus of what we intend to be one
of the finest hospitals of its size
in the country,” said Mrs. Mahn.
“We intend to go ahead with the
project, but we need the aid of
everyone.”

solete the present old one, which
fails to cover the subject. Sev
eral members insisted that the po
sition of building inspector was
one of the most important in the
city and sufficient salary should
be paid to Becure a competent
man.
It was decided to send a com*
munication to Council asking help
with the question of bettering
tlic condiviuii ui uie streets. Xt
was also pointed out that thou
sands of dollars were spent on the
school buildings, while many of
the classrooms had but eight, ten
or twelve pupils.

and they intend to cast their votes
for him.”
“I would like to see Mr. Marston
go to the polls unopposed,” de
clared another prominent Vent
nor matron, who is a leader in
club and social life but who asked
that her name be left out because
of her intention not to become
active in politics. “We will do
anything possible for him among
our friends.”
“Both myself and my husband
expect to vote for Mr. MJarston,”
stated another woman who is a
leader in civic improvement af
fairs. “We are not identified with
politics in general but we are for
Mr. Marston because we believe
that his election would be a fine
thing for Ventnor.”
Up until the hour of going to
press only Mr. Marston and
Councilman Ralph Brooks had
appeared openly in the field for
the Mayoralty position. President
of Council George Gumphert re
fused to commit himself either as
to the matter of his own possible
candidacy or the question as to
who mhe will support if he does
not run. There is a report to
elfect that Mrs. Horace M. Leeds
may decide to make the run for
the office instead of throwing her
support to one of the present
mayoralty candidates, but Mrs.
Leeds has issued no statement on
the matter.
