Longport News William S. Gilmore The Board of Commissioners held an adjourned meeting in Borough Hall on Friday evening. The State Board of Commerce and Navigation having approved bids for Sea protection work, resolu tions were presented to accept lowest bids. The Commissioners called upon property owners present to express their' views. After answering property owner’s questions and explaining details, the following bids were accepted: j Bid of Frank P. Gandy for erect | ing bulkhead between 14th and 16th Avenues; bid of Louis J. * Sieling for placing stone in front of sea-wall between 16th and fe 18th Avenues; bid of McAllister I Lighterage Line, Inc., for towing * floats from New York to Long jji port; bid of Louis J. Sieling for | placing, sinking and Ailing with I sand, of floats; and bid of E. J. Holland for furnishing and plac [ ing stone in Eleventh Avenue Jetty. Among property owners : i present, James B. Townsend and J. Towers Townsend pledged their support to the Commissioners and agreed to assist in the campaign being waged to secure payment of delinquent taxes. Are you supporting and assist ing? The latest contribution to the Volunteer Fire Department is a check in the sum of $25 from Charles F. Bonsor. Contributions to date amount to $1,065. Includ ing the above, the Volunteers have raised $2,300 toward fire appa ratus and in addition have $2,200 in the Belief to be used in case of sickness, accident or death. Morris Woodland, a former Longport resident, on Saturday, started for his present home in California after making the trip with Mrs. Woodland across the Continent in order to attend the funeral of Mrs. Woodland’s father, Michael McCoy. Mrs. Woodland will spend a month or two with her mother in Longport before returning to California. Longport residents learned with regret of the recent death of Clarence L. Goldenberg which oc curred in Algiers. Mr. Golden berg was touring the Orient along with Mr. Warren Somers and Dr. Weinberg when suddenly stricken. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Gold smith were Longport visitors on Sunday. Mrs. Anna B. Johnson, Mrs. Eva L. Gilmore and Miss Kath arine Stouck motored to Cape May on Sunday. The State Board of Taxation recently made its decision in the appeal of Edwin S. Dickerson for a reduction in the assessment on his “Log Cabin” property at Eleventh Avenue and the Beach. A small reduction was allowed. Howard Sheck is agent for a firm that has rented the “Phillips Basin” property at 29th Avenue and the Bay. This is perhaps the largest boathouse along the New Jersey coast. Extensive alter ations will be made to the spacious club rooms which will be newly furnished and placed in readiness for social events during the 1923 season. The public garage on 27th Ave nue has been sold by Harry Riley to John Glass, the present pro prietor. John Nugent has started work on new homes on Atlantic Avenue near 2oth Avenue. Work is progressing on cottages on Oberon Avenue between 24th and 25th Avenues, being erected by Stanley Steelman for John Langhorne. These cottages con tain modern heating .apparatus and will be occupied in winter as well as in summer. Snappy weather during the past week has reduced the number of fishermen and increased the num ber of gunners. Stiemerling to Build Paul H. Stiemerling, Manager of the Vienna Pastry Shop in At lantic City, has purchased a fine lot at the northwest corner of Newport and Winchester Ave nues. Mr. Stiemerling intends to use the plot for a fine residence which he will make his perman ent home.
