i SECTION 6®nCScKeuer REPAIRING THE OLD CAR FOR SPRING TOURING ' In preparing for the spring touring season, the car owner in the suburbs who may have the facilities as well as the qualifi cations to do his own repair work, and the city owner, who al though he may possess the ability is denied the means, are likely to discover that the car which ran so smoothly last season needs some attention for the coming months. The important thing, whether done in the home garage or at a service station, is to be sure that the needed work is done. For this spring overhaul ing, among the essentials are the following: The spark plugs should be cleaned and the points evenly ad justed to get an even running engine. The vacuum tank should be drained. The jtrainer located at the top where the gasoline feeds into it should be taken out and cleaned. The float should be tested. Fill with gas oline to see if the float rises and closes the valve. It is well to have the carbon removed from the cylinders and the valves in spected and ground if necessary. The strainer located at the carburetor should be taken out and cleaned. At the same .time the carburetor float chamber should be drained to remove any water or sediment that may have collected. The same should be done to the main .fuel tank. While the gasoline fuel line is disconnected from the vacuum tank it should be blown out with compressed air. This may be done with a tire pump. In this case the fuel line is left con nected to the main fuel tank. The dirt is thus blown into the tank and therefore should be done before the fuel tank is drained. . Drain the oil reservoir of the engine and put in a new supply of oil. Where there is a screen at the pump this should be taken out and cleaned. Take the bat tery to a service station, have it tested and recharged if neces sary. The interruptor points should be cleaned. NEW OAKLAND AGENCY The enterprising Guttridge or ganization has received the Local Agency for Oakland Cars which have been unrepresented here for sometime. The distribution and sales will be from the Service Station of the Guttridge Company at 805 Baltic Avenue. HOUPT AND REO Those Reo speed cars that Houpt is selling from his Ver mont Avenue agency are big items with the man who is looking for a good looking car within the moderate figure. _ BUICK, BUICK A surprisingly large number of new Buicks are evidenced on the streets with the coming of spring. It looks as though Hall & Gravatt were meeting the pros pects with cars that appeal to them. THE AIR CLEANER The need of an efficient air cleaner on motor cars is impera tive. Captain Eddy Rickenbacker realized this most important need when he started the manufactur ing of the “Rickenbacker” Cars, and with the result his cars are equipped with an air cleaner which is a 100% efficient. If nature had not-made an ef ficient method of keeping dirt and dust from getting in our lungs, the life of man would be very short. The life of a motor car which is breathing in grains of sand and road dust, is naturally also very much shortened. This dust and sand taken into the motor, mixes with the oil, and be comes a product similar to a fine grinding compound, which works on all the bearing and cylinder walls, besides causing a large part of carbon formation. Tests of the cleaner used on the Rick enbacker cars, were made in the laboratory while under Govern ment supervision. Nineteen tests were made put ting through the cleaner 100 grams of fine dust as though sus pended in the air. The highest efficiencies obtained was 100%. A flexible suction tube was used with a short bend in the path of the dust and the small inefficiencies recorded are undoubtedly accounted for by the leakage of the joints in the tube. The lowest efficiencies obtained was 99.51, showing a loss of less than one-seventh of the best re sults in similar tests of a com petitive cleaner, which had pre Automobile Painting There is nothing that the old Adage—“The Recollec tion of Quality Remains Long After the Price Is Forgotten”—applies more directly to, than the painting of an automobile. Most any Painter can make a car look nice when you first get it out of the shop, but, WILL THE JOB STAND UP? THAT is the all important consideration. Our paint jobs look well and CONTINUE to look well month after month and the “Recollection of Quality Re mains.” _ * Let us prove it to you. Estimates cheerfully furnished. Atlantic Garage Co 12 South North Carolina Avenue On North Carolina Ave. between Atlantic and Pacific Phone—Marine 7§0 viously been tested, and found to be the best in its class. The aver age of the ten lowest efficiencies was 99.7, a loss of less than one twentieth of the best competitive average. The average of the ten best efficiencies was 99.91, a loss of less then one-sixtieth of the I best competitive averages. The engine speeds were varies from 1200 to 3000 RPM. Therefore it can easily be seen, by the use of an air cleaner, the life of a motor car is made con siderably longer, by eliminating sand, dust, and minimizing car bon deposit; also adding life to bearings and all wearing parts. CROSS U. S. AN EASY JOURNEY “Transcontinental trips in Hudson and Essex motor cars are becoming common,” said Ed Antrim, distributor for the Hud son and Essex motor cars. “A Hudson owner recently went from New York to Spokane, Wash., in' twelve driving days. He had no trouble whatever. Most of the owners drive more moderately and enjoy the scen ery as they ride alone. “It is of interest to know that all transcontinental records are held by Hudson and Essex. The ! one-way mark was made by Es sex shortly after this wonderful little car was put on the market, arid the round-trip record was made by Hudson in 1916. Nu merous attempts have been made to better these marks, but without avail. Both cars hold many other records, all proving, power and endurance. “For the ordinary motorist the Hudson-Essex cars combine speed and endurance with a wonderful new body idea. The cars have motors, frames and axles which are unexcelled in performance, and they also have {Continued on Page 18) 1 Sedans Coupes Phaetons r Why do other motors have a point of vibration? Because they are not con structed as the Rickenbacker, which has flywheel on each end of the crankshaft, giving a perfect balance with no vibration. v' <4- • ; ■ G. S.
