J. “Welch Built Homes” Welch Construction Company -- -; _ Ocean City, New Jersey Ventnor, England Native Is Here Famou* Organist Declares Amer ican Ventnor Has Homes as Handsome as Any in the East “Ventnor, New Jersey, and Ventnor, England, the namesake of the local city, are alike in name only,” is the opinion of Edwin B. LeMare, world-famous organ [ ist, who is vacationing at Craig | Hall. Mr. LeMare was born and raised in Ventnor, England, and was surprised to learn on arriv ing here of another community by the same name. “Here palatial residences con stitute the beauty of the city which I find to be one of the hand somest, architecturally, in the .East. In the Old Country, Vent nor derives its charm, not from its homes, but from the marvel ous landscape of the surrounding hills and mountains. The houses there are like jails, asylums and institutions. The mansions are all constructed of cold forbidding looking stones, and the smaller houses are frail and shack-like in appearance. “Here, in America, the en semble of Ventnor is magnificent. The beauty of no section is de stroyed by the presence of some unsightly structure put next to it. I must compliment the pub lic officials who supervise all con struction, on the successful reg ulation of their buildings. “Abroad, Ventnor has several beautiful homes, such as Steep hill Castle, whose appearances are spoiled by neighboring eye sores. On the Isle of Wight, which is where my Ventnor is located, the beach is of a peculiar com position called ‘shingles.’ These are solid globules about the size of a pea. Sitting or reclining upon them, however, is as soft and comfortable as upon the fin est beach sand in America. These shingles are of a reddish-brown color but when polished by a lap sidary sparkle have all the bril liance of valuable diamonds. “There are no boardwalks on Mrs. Remington is having her 19 th Avenue cottage re-papered, repaired and painted. B. J. Krause is making exten sive repairs and additions to the Majestic Apartments at I7th Avenue and the beach. Prof, and Mrs. Charles H. LaWall are occupying their cot tage on 12th Avenue. The large number of motor boats and fishermen out on Sun day would indicate that the sea son has opened. Longport had many visitors by auto and by trolley on Sunday. the Isle of Wight, but in Ventnor there is an avenue that runs / along the edge of the bathing beaches. This is a substitute for the famed wooden-way on Ab secon Island. " - “If there he any resemblance in these two cities it is in the gardenings of the private homes. I find the verdant hedges and the lawns very English. In fact the landscape gardening of Vent nor is the most English of any community not on the British Isles I have ever visited and I have visited the world around.” V Sinking Fund Makes Ready to Finance Recently the Sinking Fund Commission held a meeting in the Ventnor City National Bank and officially stated that the financial condition of the fund is perfect and that they are now ready to handle any bonds or securities issued by the city. The fiscal report showed that $15,000 of the 4% Liberty Bonds will be turned over the United States Government for redemp tion, and that $63,000 in the \ form of bonds were put into the strong box. These latter consist of 4 M United States Liberty Bonds and' Ventnor City Fire Bonds. The commissioners attending the meeting were: Mayor Al merin Marston, president; Geo. Bratten, secretary and treasurer; Clement Wasleski, Charles Beyer, Adam Freund, Enoch Turner, and Allen B.
