That seemed to be the story that was unfolded at the Apollo on Monday night under the guidance of the genius David Belasco, with a veil of light comedy as free and clear and clean as the summer winds that blow from the open sea. It was a very simple plain story that involved almost the com plexes of acting by the very ordi nary composition of the people. It' was one of those plays that with out the insight of a perfectly chosen cast plus the deftness of the Belasco hand, would be wholly worthless. He brings together an intellectually brilliant girl, master of her home, her aged Greek Professor Father and her vastly younger boy brother with a rich young man whose only occupation has been infatuations. He mates the fine ness of the girl and the shiftless life of the man in a melting pas sion of love that dances and sings and creates unalloyed the beauties of life in the living thereof. In doing so he throws to the side the paternal demand of the Father for an everlasting com panionship with his daughter and the boy who needs a mothering of his youthful impetuous nature, leaving his audience to feel that where love is—all is well. As far as the writer can recall or hearsay could recount this is the first appearance of Fay Bainter on our stage. Fortune has not been so kind as to bring her to us before.
