For Little Folks KING STORK By CHARLES SCHEUER There was a drummer march ing along in the world as bold as J brass, for the fighting was done,! and he was coming home from the wars. By-and-by he came to a great wide stream of water. There sat an old man as gnarled and as bent as the hoops in a cooper’s shop. “Are you going to cross the water?” said he. Yes, the drummer was going to do that. “And would he help a poor body across?” Well, the drummer was a good natured lad. Yes, he would do as the old man said, and would carry him across the water. So he took off his shoes and stock ings, and then he bent his back and took the old man on it, and away he started—splash! through the water. rsut tms was n*t an every-aay [ body whom he was carrying, and j the cH'ummer was not long find-! ing that out, for the further he j went in the water, the heavier I grew his load, so that his legs! shook under him, and the sweat stood on his forehead like a string of beads. And now for the wonder of all this. It was no longer an old man, but a splendid tall fellow, with hair as yellow as gold. “I am King of the Storks that bring good luck and little babies into the house,” said he, “and here I have sat for many days; for the wicked one-eyed witch who lives on the glass hill put it on me for a spell that I should be 1 an old man until somebody should carry me over the water. ! You are the first to do that, and you shall not lose by it. Here is a little bone whistle; whenever you are in trouble, just blow a turn or two on it, and I will be by to help you.” Then King Stork drew a feather cap out of his pocket and clapped it on his head, and away he flew; for he i was turned into a great, long, j red-legged stork. ine rrmces oi tnat town was as clever as she was pretty; that i was saying a great deal, for she was the handsomest in the whole world. So it was promised that any lad who could answer a ques tion she would ask, and would ask a question she could not an swer, and would catch the bird that she would be wanting, should have her for his wife, and half of the kingdom to boot. But whoever should fail in any one of the three tasks should havS .his head chopped off. Off went the drummer to the King’s castle as fast as he could step, and knocked at the door. Well, what did he want? Oh, he was only coming along with the rest to have a try for the Princess; that was what the drummer said. By-and-by j she asked the drummer if he had i j come to answer a question of I. hers, and to ask her a question |' of his, and to catch the bird that j - she should set him to catch. “Very well, then,” said she; “just come along tomorrow and I will ask you your question.” Off went the drummer. “I wonder what she will ask,” said he. “Perhaps King Stork can tell me.” So he put his whistle to his lips, and blew a turn or two, and there stood the other, sure enough. “And what do you want?” SAFE AND SURE DELIVERY of any and every package en trusted to us is absolutely guar anteed, or we stand responsible. Well, the drummer told him low the Princess was going to isk him a question tomorrow noming that he would have to inswer, or have his head chopped iff. “So, good!” says the Stork Cing; “here you have walked into i pretty puddle, and with your :yes open, into the bargain;” for le knew that the Princess was a vicked enchantress, and loved lothing so much as to get a lad nto just such a scrape. “All the same,” says he, “there is a hole in :his hedge as well as another.” rhen he went on to say that at 12 i’clock at night the Princess would come out of the house without anybody being the wiser for it, and would fly away through the air. But see, here ■was a little cap and a long feath I er—the cap was a dark cap, and if the drummer put it on his head, one could see him no more than so much thin air. As for the feather, just let hint throw his leg over it as though it was a horse, and it would carry him through the air wherever he wanted to go. Well, the drummer took the feather, and put on the cap of darkness, and off he went, though one could see him no more than though nobody was there.
