Political Pot Boiling Hard lively Campaign Under Way (Continued from Page 1) long ago if the move were really intended for the public welfare? It was just as undiplomatic an action as the “turning down ” of Amor W. Brehman, ex-Mayor of Ventnor, who was willing to stand for the Assembly last fall and had the hacking of the best element in Atlantic County. This action on the part of Mr. Johnson was the real cause of giving birth to the Clean Govern ment League. It is a positive fact that if Mr. Brehman had been nominated, Mama S. Poul son would never have run for the Assembly and there probably would never have been a Clean Government League on Absecon Island. On this subject I will have something more to write some day which I think will prove very interesting reading matter. At all events Johnson seems to have lost his finesse and just at this minute it seems as if he is being outgeneralled by Congress man Baeharach, who undoubtedly is quietly conducting his broth er’s campaign and who is a mas ter of the art, for he regulates things with statesman-like diplo macy, while Johnson tries to push through by force, availing him self of the power he has over the men that are holding office and want to continue to hold office. This poor generaismp is dam aging Bader, whose popularity is becoming more apparent every day and who would sweep the city if he were free of the John son toils. t More and more men openly be moan Bader’s subserviency to the Johnson organization. / Many clean-minded men who strongly disapprove of the Johnson meth ods, but who favor Bader person ally, comfort themselves with the fact that after the election Bader will swing clear of the Jdhnson faction. It is of course, difficult to conceive how this is possible, but it is the only argument at the disposal of those Baderites, who are at the same time Anti-John son men. Kuehnle’s cause has been weakened and Kuehnle would have been much shrewder if he had refused to vote on the jitney and Schmeidler questions, for now Kuehnle is considered a Johnson man sailing under false colors. Kuehnle has had so many friends and sympathizers that verily I believe he could even have won on the straight Johnson ticket on the ground that he probably would continue the next four years as he has in the last four years, during which time he made a splendid record. But now they say he is neither fish nor fowl running on an independent ticket voting with the Johnson side. So it looks just at this minute as if he has lost many of his adherents and may not have such a walkover after all. me uiean uovernmeni League, which has acquired a great deal of strength is having a kind of an internal dissension for many of its members believe that a half a loaf is better than no loaf and that anything that declares itself anti-Johnson should be supported and en dorsed by the League. On the other hand, the dissent ing elemerft thinks that both tickets lack ideal candidates that would truly represent the senti ments of the Clean Government League. The whole Clean Government League, however, was united as far as Samuel P. Leeds was con cerned and they wanted him as an independent candidate for Mayor, and great pressure was brought to bear upon the Presi dent of tile Chamber of Com merce to run, but Samuel P. Leeds showed good bard horse sense in his declination and, as I predicted in these columns, turned a deaf ear to the over tures of bis many friends and prefers to retain his presidency in the Chamber of Commerce, where his civic activities are of untold value to the community and where his power is almost as great as that of the Mayor of the city. Basing the calculations on the voters of last November the Clean Government League can be figured on for the support of about twenty per cent, of the electorate of Atlantic City and while this support is extremely valuable, as a balance of power it is completely futile as far as trying to elect any specific can didate. In other words if Bach- j arach and Bader were to run j about even the twenty per cent, vote controlled by the Clean Government League could elect either man that the league de cided to endorse, but the league itself would be absolutely power less to elect a man of its own choice. ~ Bo it win 'De round m the end that the Clean Government League will throw its influence in favor of the anti-Johnsonites, for they could not consistently do anything else. The only candi date that has met with the un qualified approval of the dean Government League is Walter J. Buzby and the league would like to have an entire ticket of noth ing ^but Buzbys, which is a Utopia that can not be reached in Atlan tic City at this time. It will be found that when the anti-Johnson platform appears it will practically endorse the Clean Government principles which merely demand that there should be no protected vice and an un tarnished administration with fair and just law enforcement. me (jiean uoverinent League, as I understand it, has absolutely no intention or idea of trying to revolutionize the re sort or doing the slightest thing that would prove of detriment to resort enterprises. This they have declared time and time again both in print and by word of mouth and this being the case no great hardship will be in-, volved in the endorsement of these principles by the anti Johnson forces. Harry Bacharach is undoubt edly gaining in strength. The very few speeches he has so far made have been convincing. He stands on an unsoiled record and points with pride to a four years administration which was not be smirched with graft and irregu larities. He is not throwing any mud, but he is trying to reason with the voters and teach them the desirability of a broad, lib eral government with just enough elasticity to stay free of protect ed vice and underworld compli cations. The fact that Walter J. Buzby has consented to run on the same ticket with him is of tremendous value to the intrepid Harry, for the average voter reasons that a man of Mr. Buzby’s high stand ing, seeking neither self aggran dizement nor pecuniary gain and having at heart only the welfare of the community would not be likely to be the running mate of any man unless he felt absolutely convinced that he was on the bet ter and the right side of the ques tion. Mr. Buzby, like every other thinking man does not concede that there has been any break in the Republican party of At lantic County. The Republican Organization as an organization representing Republican prin ciples stands as a rock and there is no question involved that would affect the Republicanism of any voter be he Johnson or anti Johnson. There is only -a question of leadership to be decided and this can be illustrated in no better way than in the homely language Df one of our seafaring men who said the other night: “We’re all Republicans. We don’t doubt the safety of the Re publican ship, but boys, if we were all going on a big long voy ige and the ship had a captain hat we thought was unsafe, :ould any of us be blamed for wanting to substitute that man with a captain that we all posi ;ively knew was a safe and true navigator and didn’t take any chances of going near reefs or into shallow waters that might wreck the ship? “That’s just what we are doing in Atlantic County. We’re all good Republicans, but a good many of us believe that the ship’s FURNITURE AT WHOLESALE PRICES I take you direct to our Factory Warerooms in Philadel phia at my expense. Pair Of Spectacles Uncovers Gem Theft (Continued from Page 1) learned that the girl had fled to Camden in a taxi. The Camden police were wired and the girl was nabbed as the taxi approached the ferry. She was held for Detectives Casey and Bunting of the Atlantic City Bureau and was brought, with Ballard, to Ventnor. The rings had been sold for $75.
