Casting Tilts Saturday--Field Club Shoot-Bike Races ^HORACE BLITZ - Covering Atlantic County's Sports- ANARD W. LITTMAN Resort Swim Marvel To Be Welcomed Home Miss Betty Becker Will Be Ac corded Monster Reception on Arrival in Resort From Olympics A monster welcome home awaits the now world-famous Miss Betty Becker, of Ambassador Swimming’ Club and Olympic fame. Miss Becker, now queen of the world’s fancy divers, has brought prominence to the resort by reason of her own splendid performances, and Mayor Edward L. Bader has fittingly arranged a reception for the aquatic marvel. Bands, a parade and speeches by the city fathers, are all in cluded in the big program for the welcome home of the first At lantic City resident to be on an Olympic team, to say nothing of holding a world’s championship. Athletic Meet Draws Viators The big Penn A. C.-Ocean City athletic meet drew several thou sand visitors here over the two day period it Was held. Many of the visitors were members of the Penn A. C., and witnessed the games. The tennis matches drew sev eral hundred, while the track meet, with over two hundred en tries, including the world’s rec ord-breaking girls’ relay team, also was witnessed by a large crowd. The trapshooting events at the yacht club were witnessed by nearly a thousand persons, while the baseball contest between the Ocean City Collegians and the Penn A. C. team was in progress. Big Figblin’ Tussle Charlie Baum, Baltimore wel terweight boxer, clashes with Jack Nelson at the Bacharach Park to morrow night. This bout is but one of a series of fast sessions that will provide an interesting night for the many pugilistic fans. Villa Takes On Kite Pancho Villa, the flyweight champ of the world, had the grandest time of his life on the Ambassador beach in Atlantic City. The bathers screamed with laughter when he and Ed Kite, the lifeguards’ heavyweight ath lete, staged a mock bout. READY FOR RACES Evan Burrows Fontaine is shown holding the leashes of two fast canines at the Atlantic Park dog track. Miss Fontaine has taken an interest in the dogs and does her bit in schooling them. Contenders For Davis Cup Honors In Resort Two Chinese Representatives Play on Ambassador Tennis Courts in Practice Rounds The Chinese contenders for the Davis Cup are practicing daily on the Ambassador Hotel tennis courts. W. L. Wei, of Hong Kong, captain of the team, was for three years singles tennis champ of his home city, and two years captain of the Massachu setts Institute of Technology out fit. Paul Kong, his partner, a na tive of Shanghai, was a student at Columbia University. They are accompanied by their manager, C. H. Yeh, formerly of Tientein, and by H. H. Khoo, an other member of the team, who has just been playing in Wimble ton, England, with Vincent Rich ards, the young American cham pion. They will leave the shore this Monday for Brooklyn to play in the Davis Cup championship with the Australian team, July 21st. Seashore Bike Crown To Be At Stake Soon Many Noted Bikemen Will Be Seen in Atlantic City Cham* pionthipt Next Month at Airport Some of the most noted bikemen in the country will exhibit their wares at the Atlantic City Air port Sunday afternoon, August 3d. Plans for the staging of a series of bicycle races are now under way. One of the features of the big program planned will be the one mile grind for the championship of Atlantic City, and a silver cup emblematic of the title. This race has already attracted many entries. Another feature is a five-mile race for a beautiful rac ing bicycle, donated by Van Do ren & Hampel, resort dealers, who are staging the affair. The program is staged yearly and is said to be one of the best in bike circles in the East. Those who wish to compete will fill out entry blanks at Van Doren & Hempel’s bike store. If the Japanese get too huffy, says a Ventnor deacon, we might punish them by stopping sending over missionaries to' convert them. M. LITTLE ROCK AVENUE Neptune S77-W Ocean City Clubs to Stage Casting Three Big Events, With Valuable Prises to Winners, Will Be Held This Saturday The combined casting tourney of the Anglers’ Club of Ocean [ City and the Ocean City Pishing Club will be held this Saturday morning at 9 o’clock on the Mc Laughlin-Conover garden tract at North Point, Ocean City. There will be three events, event No. 1 being, average of five casts in open field; No. 2, longest of five casts in open field; No. 3, mystery event, unknown distance. Events one and two will be di vided into four classes. Gentle system of handicapping will be used. The clubs have provided many prizes for the winning contes tants, who must be over sixteen years of age. Luncheon will be served to all who participate. John L. Vanderherchen, of the Ocean City Fishing Club, and Dr. C. Charles Hankinson, of the Ang lers’ Club, are chairmen of the tournament committee. Dogs to Sport Wares A dog show, bigger and better than ever, is to be held by the Kennel Club of Atlantic City as its seventh annual event on the Steeplechase Pier, September 26th to 27th. The dogs will be judged under the rules of the American Kennel Club, a galaxy of famous canine judges to be in the resort at that time to pick the beauties. The two-day exhibit will be held for the benefit of the Atlantic City Hospital. Maybe the reason General Dawes got along so well in Eu rope was that the administration has nothing to do with his mis sion. “Doug” Fairbanks Plans’ To See Local Dog Races The famous motion picture star —Douglas Fairbanks — will prob ably be in the resort around August 8 to see a specially-prepared pro gram of dog races in his honor at the Atlantic Park dog track, where the 60-day racing season is now in progress. “Doug** has long expressed his in tentions of viewing the snanpy ca nines* racing, but has been held nacl: by pressure of work. However, he is confident he’ll be able to reach the shore by the eighth of next month, which? will be a source of delight to movie and dog fans alike. He will award a trophy to the winner of the feature race on the evening of his presence at the popu lar park, which is the scene nightly of speedy races in which some of the most valuable canines in the country sport their wares. Resort Field Club Plans Public Shoot Colored Gunners Will Hold See* ond Annual Event This Evening The second public shoot oi the Atlantic City Field Club will be held this evening at the Westy Hogan Gun Club, Tennessee Ave. and Absecon Boulevard. The Atlantic City Field Club is the only colored sportsman’s club in the resort. For several years past the members have made an nual trips in the fall of the year to Maryland on a gunning tour and have always acquired consid erable game. Members will gather tonight at Fitzgerald’s, leaving at 9:30 P. M. The public is cordially invited to attend this event, which was decided to be held at a meeting of the club last Friday.
