CATHOLIC CHURCH AT
SPRINGER DESTROYED
BY FIRE
: News was received in Roy Fri
day morning that the Catholic
Church at Springer burned to
the ground about 1 A. M. Friday
morning. The Parochial school
was also destroyed by the fire
but the Parish home of Father
Chateau was saved by the he
roiework of the volunteer fire
-department.
The' fire was first discovered
by tourists who were camping on
the public camp prounds just at
the rear of the church and the
blaze was already coming from
the roof of the Alter Room in
the new addition recently built
to the church. The fire had gain
ed too much headway by the
time the volunteer department
reached, the scene of the fire
and all they could do was' to
keep the fire from spreading to
adjacent buildings.
v The boys worked hard to save
the' church and school but within
an hour both buildings were
gutted by t;ie flames. All furn
ishings in the church were de
stroyed but most of the furni
ture of the school building was
saved.
The night was cold and the
volunteer boys stayed on the job
with their clothes almost a mass
of ice and did some good work in
.saving the surrounding build
ings. ; '
- The loss is about $5,000.00
and is partly covered by insur
ance. The cause of the fire is
unknown.
SOME SPUDS A
John McDaniel who used to
live about 12 miles northeast of
Roy writes the S.-'A. from his
new home, in Hartsel, Colorado,
-where he moved last spring and
rented a farm in that part of the
state known, as the spud court -
-try." He,r? arrived m , Loipraao ;
late-in the spring but managed
'o ge c. two1 acres m potatoes, sod!
land at mat, ano ne nas jusir
harvested the two acres getting
8,4UU pounds irom me paicn,
and they are real spuds too as he
sent four of the medium sized
ones to this office for' proof but
he did.not send the real large
ones as he was afraid it would be
impossible to make us believe
they were raised on sod and in
a community that lias no larger
average rainfad than this mesa,
and by the way John was too
busy to even cultivate them,
just simply planted them x and
waited to harvest them. Anv-
wav John is a "táter raiser" and 1
we shall expect to see the Roy i
merchants handling spuds raised
by Mr. McDaniel next year.
