Man Convicted On Statutory Rape Edward Guest, colored, charged with statutory rape of Lulu Thomp son, March 1, was tried and con victed in Judge Arthur Gordon’s Recorder’s Court Thursday morn ing. Guest was extradited from Kan sas City a few weeks ago, through the efforts of Assistant Prosecu tor John K. Graham. The prisoner w f as first arraign ed on July 31, at which time he pleaded not guilty. He was held on $5,000 hail. At the trial Thursday. Guest was found guilty, jury trial having been waived. He was referred to the Probation Department for ex amination, and will be sentenced on August 27. Rival Throws Lye In Woman’s Face Maybelle Hawkins, 31 years old, 675 Rowena St., is in the Receiving Hospital suffering from lye burns about the eyes, mouth, chest, and abdomen and the loss of sight in her left eye. Mrs. Hawkins told police that Fannie Adams. 25, of 2943 St. An toine St., threw lye on her. Later officers brought to the Homicide Squad Fannie Adams and several witnesses. Statements were taken at the hospital from Maybelle Hawkins 20 xxt& CLIFFORD 2924 Woman Dies After Eating Hamburger Ater eating a hamburger sand wich at a restaurant on Hastings St., Sunday, Rochell Bush, 38 years old. of E, Forest Ave. took sick and died. Friends said that the woman complained of feeling ill after eat ing the sandwich and was taken to her home and then to the Re ceiving Hospital where she died a few' hours later. A friend Gertrude Jackson, 995 Illinois St., said that Rochell Brush had complained her stomach for some time even be fore eating the hamburger sand wich. The body was ordered moved to the Wayne County Morgue where an autopsy w’as held. The death was found due to indigestion and natural causes. o “Jesse Owens” Oaks To Be Planted As Memorials Berlin —(O' — Owens has ordered three oak trees to be shipped to three schools where he studied—a junior and a senior high school in Cleveland, and Ohio State University. Pistol Brandished In Alabama Court Anniston, Ala.—(C) —Roosevelt Collins was sentenced to die Tues day after the husband of Mrs. Joel Hill,farm woman who was t h e alleged an attack, brand ished a pistol at the defendant when he testified that he asked Mrs. Hill a question and she start ed walking to the woods with him. Although national guardsmen were supposed to have searched everyone when they entered the courtroom, Hill got by with his gun. Although Judge Carr ruled Hill was in contempt of court, no penalty was imposed. by Detective Delbert Raymond of the Homicide Squad. FYom the statements it was -learned that Maybelle Hawkins had been accus ing Fannie Adams of breaking up her home. She went to 2943 St. Antoine St., at about 5:15 p. m., last Thursday and called to Fannie Adams to come out and bring her husband, John, as she wanted to tell her in front of him what had been going on. Fannie Adams claimed however, that the HAwkins woman pulled a razor on her, while "wVETRIA liGLE Moron Rapes 5-Year-Old Girl Child Is Lured From Home By Strange Man Local detectives are combing De troit, in search for a moron who lured little Shirley Jean Martin, live-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin, 1410 Alger, from her home last Saturday afternoon, took her to a deserted barn at the rear of 7339 Russell street, and crimi nally assaulted her. According to the child's story she was standing on the back porch of her home early Saturday afternoon, when a strange man came out of the alley and promis ed to take her to her mother, who was ill at a local hospital. He led the little girl to a neighboring barn, and after attacking her, threatened her with harm if she tried to leave, then locked her in and departed. The terrified child remained in the barn for three hours, while neighbors searched for her. Late in the afternoon, small boys pass ing down the alley, heard her sobbing. They rescued her from the barn and took her home. The child was taken to Receiv ing hospital, where she was found to be in a serious condition. The rapist is described as about 35 years of age; five and a half feet tall; weight, 145, dark brown complexion. He w r ore blue pants, a dirty white shirt, and soiled black hat. Lieut. Wallie Williams and Detectives Robert Mitchell and William Simmons are assigned to the case. Minister’s Home Damaged By Fire The home of Rev. and Mrs. S. D. Armstring. 5832 Rivard street, was burned last Sunday morning, by a fire of unknown origin. The clergyman, his wife and two room lers was awakened by the crackl ing«of flames, and escaped without personal injury, although cloth ing and household furnishings a mounting to S3OO were destroyed. Rev. Armstrong stated that he was preparing to leave on a trip to Toledo, Ohio. His wife had had his clothes cleaned and pressed and laid away in the special room where the family clothing, bedding, and similar belongings were kept. Some believe the mysterious fire originated hv the deliberate act of an ememy. who is supposed to have thrown a torch through a broken window into the room. Because of the loss of his cloth ing. Rev. Armstrong has postpon ed his trip to Toledo, indefinitely. He announces that gifts of wearing apparel for his wife and himself, as well as bedding, will be grate fully received ..O' - ] Arkansas Group Visits Detroit Among the visitors in Detroit this week were Thomas Lloyd Jackson, Otto Jackson, Lola .1. Virgins, Mary Morris, and Edna Davis, all of Wyne, Arkansas. The party left Thursday by motor enroute Cleve land, Chicago, and St. Louis, on the return trip home. While in the city, the visitors were guests of relatives at the Northcross Hotel. she was scrubbing the floor with lye water when she saw that May belle came after her with the raz or, she threw the lye water on her. Maybelle Hawkins denied having a razor and stated she happened to be walking by the house when Fannie her and started an argument. Then threw the lye water on her. Fannie Ad ams is being held at the Womans Detention Home at police head quarters. / A Non-Partisan Newspaper DETROIT, MICHIGAN, SATURDAY AUGUST 15, 1936 Goes To Theatre To See Picture Meets Death Ten minutes alter admittance to Receiving Hospital at midnight last Saturday, Clinton Vincent, 50, of Ola Montcalm street, died from a bullet wound in the abdomen, af ter he had been accidentally shot at Arcadia Theatre, 2416 Hastings, by Willie Billot, 20-yea r-old Special officer of the theatre. The tragedy occurred when El liott was attempting to evict ano ther, who was creating a disesßOl ther who was creating a disturb ance . After knocking the officer down, the unknown customer fled from the theatre. Elliot fired at him, the bullet missing the mark and hitting Vincent. Elliott is held under arrest, pend ing investigation for man-slaught er. 1 • ~Q ■■ ~ Lone Bandit Robs Restaurant Man A lone bandit entered a restau rant at 2024 Beaubien early Wed nesday morning and robbed the cash register of $5 and escaped south on Beaubien. Malinda Mur ray, owner and resident of the place, reported that the man en tered the restaurant and ordered ham and eggs. While she was pre paring them, the thug pulled out a gun and barked, “this is a hold up.’’ He took $5 from the cash register and escaped. Death Claims Social Worker Funeral Services For Miss E’Dora Morton To Be Held, Friday Funeral rites for Miss E’Dora Morton, talented daughter of Dr. hi Mrs. M. E. Morton, tst>32 Fir wood avenue,, will be held from the family residence, Friday, Aug ust 14. Miss Morton died at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning, at Trinity Hos pital. following a brief illness of only two days. She was taken sud denly ill Sunday, was operated on Monday, in a vain effort to save her life. Miss Morton was Dorn 22 years ago. in Lowndesboro, Ala. She completed her high school career at Northwestern High in 1930 with honors, after which she entered the University of Michigan, where she graduated with distinction In Jan uary 1934. While at the University of Mich igan, Miss Morton was made a member of the Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Society. She was also a member of Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and at the time of her death was employed as a social worker at the Children's Aid Society, on West Warren. The deceaserl is survived by her parents and two sisters Sue aged 19, and Emmetta, 15. Citizens Donate Prize Awards In Music Auditions The National Association of Ne gro Musicians is staging a pre convention scholarship contest in Detroit, August 21, just two days before the convention proper o pens. Dr. John W. Moore of Flint, Michigan, chairman of the Nation al Scholarship Committee reports that plans are progressing satis factorily for a successful contest program to usher in the convention with a ‘‘bang’’. The Hon. Wm. H. McKeighan, five times Mayor of Flint, Mich., has donated a $ 100.00 scholarship the first prize in the contest. The National Scholarship Com mittee is very grateful to all of these prize donors. o Emery Gill Is Beaten By Thugs Emery Gill, age 23, 1542 Wel lington St., told police that he was attacked and beaten Friday morn ing by three unknown men for no reason at all. (Victim Stabbed During Quarrel Dout Bullen. age 40, of 154;'! Maple street is in a serious condi tion in the Receiving Hospital suf fering from three stab wounds in the left chest and arm. Bullen and Eliza Bullen. his for mer wife, who lives at 1921 Maple St., and Adam Jefferson, age 40. a friend had been drinking at the Maple St. address Friday night. Wit nesses state that Jefferson start ed calling Bullen names and then stabbed him with a knife, after which he went to his room and then left the house through the front door. The knife was found by the landlady. Mrs. Grace Jack son in Jefferson’s room and turn ed over to officers of the Homicide Squad. Police are looking for Jefferson. Ford Worker’s Wife Found Dead Early Wednesday morning. Frankie Dukes, 32, of 4443 Brush street was found dead at the rear of 4447 Brush by Willie Murray, n roomer at her house. Murray im mediately notified the police and when they arrived on the scene they found no marks of external violence on the body. Willie Dukes, husband of the deceased woman, informed the of ficers that he had returned home at 12:50 a. m. from the Ford Motor Company, where he was em ployed, and that his wife was not home. He went to bed and when the roomer, Murray, came in at 3:25 A. M. he was awakened. Finding his wife still gone, he asked Murray to look out on the back porch for her, as it was her custom when under the influence of liquor to sit out there. Murray found her in the rear of 4447 Brush on the ground beside the porch. Neighbors reported that they had seen the women sitting on the porch talking to someone and play ing with a dog. She seemed high ly intoxicated and was using loud and profane language. ■Willie Dnkes stated that his wife had been suffering from a heart ailment. jHP ALL news STANDS 5 CENTS A COPY > Lemuel Daniels, 22 year old youth, of 3113 Chene Street, is be ing held in the Wayne County Jail for the murder of l\is pretty 18- year-old wife, Mary Howard Dan iels, and her sweetheart, Robert Ritchey. The shooting took place last Thursday night at the Daniels’ home on Chene Street. The story according to the police, is that Ro bert Ritchey, 25 years old. had been going with Mrs. Daniels. Ritchey came to the home of Mr. Daniels’, at 11 p. m. and told him to give him Mrs. Daniels’ clothes. Dan iels told Ritchey to tell Mrs. Dan iels to come and get the clothes herself. About 15 minutes later, Ritchey came back accompanied by Mrs. Daniels. When Lemuel Daniels saw the couple coming up the steps, he grabbed his 32:20 Win chester rifle. When his wife came in the door, 'followed by Ritchey, she called for Daniels and he did not answer. Ritchey apparently started for the bed room door, when Daniels shot him in the right chest. Mrs. Daniels attempted to run out of the door and her hus band fired two shots at her, one striking her in the back of the neck. She died instantly. Ritchey died later at the Receiving Hospi tal. After the shooting, Lemuel Dan iels went to the Hunt Street Sta tion and gave himself up. He was arrested and charged with murder. When Daniels was interviewed by a Tribune reporter Tuesday, he said that he did not intend to shoot his pretty wife, but the shot struck her when Ritchey fell. Dan iels also stated that Ritchey, who i had broken up his home, was a ■ married man, and the father of two children. Another child is ex pected to be born to the dead man’s wife soon. Daniels denied that he had agreed to let his wife go, be cause they had talked it over, and were willing to go back together and make the best of it, he said. Ritchey came back with her and tried to scare her into getting her clothes and leave her husband, but she hesitated. It was then Dan iels said, that he stepped out and fired at Ritchey. The shots struck Ritchey in the chest. Ritchey turned to run and fell as Daniels fired another shot w’hich missed him striking his wife in the back of the neck. Mrs. Daniels’ funeral was held from the Ford Funeral Home, Tuesday. Voters May Register At Bethel Church Rev. W. H. P e c k, pastor of Bethel A. M. E.
