The production, In the opinion of expert critics, is one of the most; colorful extravaganzas ever wit nessed on the American stage. The scene of the play is not laid in Scotland, as in Shakespeares’' Original script, but la the melo-1 dramatic island of Haiti. The play had a ten-weeks’ run on Broadway. | in New York and was acclaimed by ! sophisticated theatre-goers as a sensational success. Typical examples of the favora ble comment which this unusual production is receiving from out standing critics, are expressed in the following paragraphs: "This West Indian Macbeth is the most colorful, the most startling of any perfor mance of that great tragedy ever given on this continent"—Burns Mantle, of the Daily News. "The production of this odd Mac beth is splendid."—Percy Ham mond, of N. Y. Herald Tribune. Anthony Overton, of Chicago, de scribes this sensational theatrical production as follows: WPA BOOKLET TELLS ABOUT HARLEM New York—(C) —An 18 page pamphlet produced by the WPA entitled ‘‘Your New York’’ says Harlem is “a paradise for seekers after exotic” where ‘‘cabarets, night clubs, dance halls, swing rhythms and irrepressible high spirits all add their measures to a great rhapsody in which the blue notes are sounded by adjacent pov erty and squaler.” with an additional 60 per cent of i receipts above SIOO,OOO. Foord who recently whipped Jack Peterson for the title, was later found to be under contract for a fight in October or Novem ber with Neusel. The biggest diffi culty remaining is in staging the battle and promoting definite in terest among Britishers should Neusel, another foreigner, win. A contract is understood to have been sent to New York for the sig nature of Mike Jacobs and its re turn to London is awaited. The $75,000, if the bout goes through, ' is to be deposited in a London Bank before the fight. "These 150 acrors who are led by Maurice Kills as 'Macbeth,’ and the beautiful and talented Kdna Thom as, as 'Lady Macbeth;’ are all garbed in the military costumes of the Napoleonic regime, and present a colorful extravaganza. Their sombre brown and bronze color, seen in the light so fittingly toned and arranged, lends itself readily to the heightening of the realism and beauty of every scene in this most extraordinary play. “Both Mr. Kills and Miss Tho mas appear in such regal splendor and so thoroughly interpret the character roles in which they are starred, that were the Bard of Avon' to return during the pre sentation of the play, he would no doubt be amazed to discover what lie would be led to think the rein carnation of the characters he so powerfully depicted in the days of long ago. "Only those who attend the pre sentation can possibly gain the proper concept of the marvelous abilities of depicting possessed by the entire cast, who thanks to the sponsorship of the Works Progress Administration, have gained for themselves a rare opportunity to display their talents to great ad vantage, while at the sume time they are gainfully employed. "‘Macbeth,’ as played by the Ne gro troupe of actors, is really .< powerful tragedy faithfully portry ing the greed for power the sub servience of serviles, the machina tions and plottingsof a wily and hypocritical woman —her power over an easily swayed man, who wants the things he does not de serve; the glory, the splendor the mysticism—the blood—and then the final pay-off—'for the wages of sin is death.’” The Federal Theatre Project, in presenting this play, with its great cast of Negro artists, has inaugu rated an enterprise which In the opinion of thousands who have seen the production, not only fills a great need in the theatrical world but also serves to bring home to the people the inate and acute abilities possessed by colored ar tists. PATRICK, .Ir.) Recently Jesse Owens made pub lic his announcement to turn to the stage, postponing his college car eer until the proposed vaudeville tour has been completed. Many questions come to fore regarding the sprint star’s decision. Will the stage tour be successful? Will his amateur status be jeopardized? If so, who will take his place at the head of the sprinters? A nation wonders. Four years ago another Olympic champion sprinter, Eddie Tolan, hailed from coast to coast for his great feat at Los Angeles, turned to the stage as a means of the reaping qf a fortune through the generosity-of Me--many enthusias tic admirers. After a few appear ances in the East, Tolan was forc ed to abandon the stage because the public refused to accept him is their hero in this new fieid. He turned to professional footracing and captured the world title iu Australia; however little money was forthcoming from this venture. Thus Tolan’s career as a profes sional ended without marked fin ancial reward. Governor Davy is reported to be raising a fund with which to buy Owens a home to show the ap preciation that the whole state of Ohio has for his great exploits. At the harbor in New York he was pre sented with a gold watch valued at SSOO. Upon his return to Cleve land he was accorded the greatest welcome since Lindbergh. A huge street parade was held in his hon or. A job in the Ohio legislature j which he had been holding dur ing college still awaited him. No, Tolan was not quite so fortunate upon his return. Should Owens’ amateur standing be jeopardized through this stage appearances who will take his place as premier sprinter?
