how her mother had treated het
and put her out of her houae with
out a cent because she didn’t want
to marry a pharmacist for pres
tige.
GO ON WITH THE STORY
' Well, that's all right. I'm not
going to put you out. I love you.
and 1 mean to keep you with me
from now on." said daddy
I felt to happy, and hugged him
until veina popped out on his brow.
For a time, everything was per
fectly happy until three months
later. I grew weary of the country
life Wide open spaces, and cow
mooing. and pig grunts made me
wish it all had not occurred No
theatres, no street cars, nothing
but miles of plowed farms and
chicken cackles and hillside*. I
hated to leave daddy and go back
to momma.—ls she woufd take me.
I though she would should I re-'
turn; because I knew blood was
thicker than water; but I had my
daddy's independence rooted and
grounded in me: but the country
life gored nearly everyblt of it out
of me.
When I had spent about two
more boring weeks in Armenia. I
received a letter It was from mom
ma When I opened it, her photo
fell to the floor. I picked it up as
something snapped within me. I
read an inscription on the bottom:
‘ To my little darling from mother "
"Un hunh! She’s not so hard af
ter all," I muttered with a smile
I trembled with home-sickness and
longed to be near her; but now
that 1 knew she wanted me. It
I would make her want all thel
harder even though it hurt me as I
much as it did her I would stand
it to carry out my point of inden
ilence
Even those horrid scolds would
sound like music to me now; bu
she must never know it. Another
week passed, then another. Still
no more letters -aame. and I be
came troubled, and wrote her sev
eral letters; but tore them up be
fore mailing "Maybe she only
wrote me once to make me want to
see hei." I said to myself "Well
I'll show her how strong I am!" 1
determined; but I knew I was
growing weaker and weaker. My
love for mother was getting the
better of me
Finall) on Saturday of the fifth
week. I received another letter.
This time she pleaded with me to

make her think 1 didn't. She told
me If I didn't come home In a har
ry, * baby brother would lake my
place in her heart. That gave me
the shivers and I decided to go
back at once regardless of all past
happeuings. But how could 1 tell
daddy?'’ was my problem Here I
was. facing the hardest problem in
my whole lifetime
The next week passed like a cen
tury. and that following Sunday 1
heard an automobile drive up be
fore the house. I hurried to the
door. There was mother and "Doc
tor," as I call my step-father.
When she saw me she screamed:
"Oh my darling!"
"Hello, mother," I said In a sub
dued tone, trying to conceal my
throbbing within me. and finally I
had to give way. and fell Into her
arms and cried
‘Anges dear, why did you ever
leave me like you did?" she asked
"I didn't want to get married." I
' whispered from her bosom where
my head rested
"Well honey, if you'll come back
home. I won’t bother your love af
fairs again.”
She kissed me and 1 decided to
return with her
That evening when 1 got ready
to go. daddy warned her that a re
currance of the trouble would
cause him to come and see üboul
me. and things wouldn't be so
healthy for the parties involved if
he had to come after me
We arrived home the next morn
ing. and mother was in the best of
spirits. She played and joked wi h
me like she had never done before.
She seemed to have realized her
mistake; but I concluded, yet I
questioned, that her action was be
cause of her unborn child Anyway
I decided to make the best of It
and treat her like a daughter
should treat a mother
After breakfast, I left for school
I had nearly forgotten my idol with
the strange voice who had captur
ed me that night when the orrhea.
