Cowans By JESS HAUGABOOK Pinch Hitting for Russ Cowans Roll.* S. \ est, Michigan's only Negro boxing inspector, Mjs "1 believe Joe Louis is making a very splendid ges ture under the circumstances by being the first Negro ac- tively engaged in trying to break down racial barriers in the Navy!!” Vest continued, “the Navy will he obligat ed to Louis and the Negro race. I feel that in the long run it will directly or indirectly help Negro bovs in the navy.” Asked whether or not he thought the bout would be a financial success, Mr. Vest declared, “the fight should really go over big with the fight fans, not because they think that Baer has a winning chance, but because of the Rollo Vest recent interest in the Navy's dilemma since the I’ear! Har bor incident. I pick Louis to K.O. P»aer before the sixth round." • • • • • V oung Kid McCoy and Fritiie Zivic battled it out to see who would get a shot at Ray Robinson who re cently beat Zivic. In turn, the winner was to meet Red Cochrane for the welterweight title. But it just so happened that at the end of the ten furious rounds the decision was a draw. It was all Zivic up until the sixth round when McCoy staged a remarkable come back that swayed the official decision in favor of the draw verdict. Michael Strauss Jacobs will probably give McCoy a chance at "Sugar” sometime the latter part of January. Most everyone believes that Red Cochrane will prob ably lose the title no matter who he contests—Robinson, McCoy or Zivic.
