CANFIELD STATION TO MOVE TO WOODWARD Now quarters for the police department's thirteenth precinct were approved last week by the Civilian Production Administra tion. and construction will stait soon at tlie southwest corner of Woodward and Hancotk. on a structure to cost 5139.880. The present police station on Canfield, east of Woodward, which is far too small for its job as one of the busiest police stations in the United States. The present Canfield station has 227 men assigned to it They police an area with a population of 100,000, packed into 2.4 square miles. About 55 per cent of the area's people are Negro. Ala. _ The fifth annual national conference of the Provisional Committee to Organize Colored Loco mo 1 1 v e Firemen was held here last week under the auspices of the Broth erhood of Sleeping Car Porters with delegates in attendance from every Southern railroad. The conference resolved to maintain the jobs now held by Negro firemen and other Ne groes now employed in the operating crafts of the rail roads: to safeguard their se curity; and keep the door of employment open to Negro workers in the railroad indus try. Presided over by A. Phillip Randolph. BSCP president, and chairman of the Provisional Committee, the conference heard speeches and reports by Milton P. Webster. BSCP vice presi dent. B F. McLaurin. T. T. Pat 'orson, Zcttler Clay, and by the attorneys who are prosecuting cases in defense of Negro rail road workers: T. W Johnson, Thurman L. Dodson and Sam uel H. Gellman. Randolph told the delegates that the worldwide struggle be tween Western democracy and portanee to Negro railroad work totalitarianism was of great im ers, and they must not be de luded by the "Alice in Wonder land promises’’ of the support ers of Soviet totalitarianism. Radio! setrtF®^T£rtbnne DETROIT, MICHIGAN, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1946 SURVEY SHOWS VETS HOUSING SHORTAGE About 2 out of every 5 mar ried veterans of World War II in the Detroit area were doubl- : ing up with relatives or friends or were living in rented rooms, i trailers or tourist cabins, ac- j cording to a sample survey made in July for the National Hous- 1 ing Agency by the Census bu-1 reau. The survey showed that about one in ten of the married vets lived in dwelling units that j needed major repairs or lacked j a standard plumbing unit_such as running water, private flush toilet or private bath. No breakdown was made in the survey to show the status of Negro veterans as compared with the average veteran. NEGRO BOXER KILLED BYKO PROVIDENCE. R I A Pitts-! burgh Negro boxer was the tenth fatality of the year Thurs day when he was felled by a local fighter in a preliminary bout at the Arcadia arena here. The dead man is Robert Bur ton, 24 years old. father of two children, who was earning some extra money while on two week vacation from his shipyard job He was killed by a Provi dence boxer who shared his name, but is no relation The Providence man is out on S2OOO bail, pending a hear ing on a charge of manslaughter, on November 12.
