12,000 at Emmett Till
Sunday Protest Meeting
By LUTHER WEBB
An estimated 12.000 citizens
were oa hand for the NAACP
nrotest mass meeting held al
Bethel AME find Scott Memo
rial Methodist Church Sunday
afternoon.
The man meeting wa* in
protest of the Emmett Till
kidnapping and lynch mur
der and the general cam
paign fostered by the
NAACP to combat undemo
cratic processes as practiced
in America, especially and
with particular emphasis, on
the State of Mississippi.
Principal speakers w ere
Cong. Charles C. Diggs Jr.,
who along with James Del Rio
and Altv. Basil Brown, flew
to Summer. Mississippi, for the
5-day trial.
Medgar Evers. Secretary of
the Mississippi branch of the
NAACP, also spoke and told
of the general NAACP cam
paign now in force in Missis
sippi, backed almost exclusive
ly by the NAACP to eliminate
the various Civil Rights viola
tions as practiced by biased
Southerners
Atty. Edward Turner, presi
dent of both the Detroit branch
of NAACP and the State <•♦
Michigan chapter, presided.
Acquittal of the two Missis-
Htpoi brothers charged, with
the kidnapping and lynch
murder of 14-year-old Emmett

resulted in the gigantic rally
at Bethel and Scott A. M. E.
Churches.

Bethel had been overflowed
with 4.000 people in a 2.500

Cong. Diggs blasted the man

the trial, despite threats, will
be given employment.
Mosea Wright, 64-year-old
uncle of Till, has been offered
a lifetime job as a nursery at
tendant in the East and will
also leave the state of Missis*
sippi within a fortnight.
Addressing the audience
which President Turner had
to be orderly, Diggs
stated.
‘ In all niv life I ha\e nevei
witnessed such sheer perjury
and fantastic twisting of facts."
Apparently he had in mind
the testimony of the detend
ants, the wife of one of the
brothers, Carolyn Bryant. Also
the undertaker and even the
sheriff himself who stated that
“He doubted that the body re
covered from the Tallahatchie
river was t'..ai oi nil."
Rapping both parties lor
falling to aid the fight t'oi civil
rights. Diggs, the militant
Michigan Congressman, made
it clear that he will lay it on
the line to both when they
begin seeking Negro votes;
that they’ll have to sland up
and be counted.
But in the final analysis, he
stated: “It is obvious that al

“Along with our two other
Negro Congressmen, we repre

Evers, who ha* lived with
the situation in Mississippi
down through the years, and
who has been repeatedly

that he is fearless and will
