TOBACCO SUBSIDY MAY BE PROBED

WASHINGTON—Senator Neuberger (D., Ora.), is all
set to make an extremely important demand af Congress—
namely, the removal of tobacco as one of the six basic crops
entitled to government subsidy.
Neuberger will make this demand on the ground that
the Public Health Service has officially warned that cig
arets induce lung cancer.
"Why therefore," asks the senator from Oregon, "should
the American taxpayers be subsidizing a crop that con*
tributes to the most terrible disease known to man?"
"Eggs, oranges, apples, milk, and meat are not included
in the basic crops," Neuberger has pointed out, "yet they
are health-producing crops. Now that the Public Health
Service, an official arm of the government, has spoken
regarding cigarets, I do not see why another arm of the
same government should be spending money to spread
disease."

Inflation Important—

Inflation cannot be slowed down (except temporarily for
psychological reasons) until the increase in money supply
drops to a level comparable to the increase in producfton.
In actual fact, before inflation can be cured in any era pro
duction, for a period, should increase at a more rapid rate
than the supply of money. This is because the previous
imbalance between production increase and money increase
must not only be corrected, but the surplus of money over
production in the violent inflation years must now be offset
for a period by a surplus of production over current money
increase.
This process is actually going on. Present money prac
tices are not inflationary in spite of still modestly rising
prices. The correction is actually going on as may be seen
in the fact that since 1952 money supply has increased less
than B°o while gross national product is up 20%.
If current money practices continue the day of complete
balance will occur, and the inflation will be cured, at least
until the next inflation era occurs, which may be delayed
for many years; or until there is another war.
What we are seeing now, even with rising prices, is not
actually a continuation of the recent inflation era, but the
application of the cure, which doesn't cure the fever im
mediately, but allays it until the cure is actually effected.
Under these conditions the modest rise in prices over
the last five years could still continue for a while without
the danger of serious further inflation, at least for this era.
In the meantime we should note that probably the most
important basis for the continued high prices for common
stocks (some of them are selling at 25 to 40 times earnings
as against the old fashion notion that they should sell about
10 times) is the continued public fear of inflation. This fear
is not soundlv based. There is far more danger of a defla
tionary period ahead of us than continued drastic inflation.

There is no evidence to support the claim of Walter
Reuther's United Automobile Workers union that it is
"wrecking" the Kohler company of Kohler, Wis., but it is
obvious that the strike against the plumbing ware maker
has wrecked Kohler local 833 of the UAW-CIO.
The UAW tacitly acknowledged defeat on the second
anniversary of the strike, April 5, 1956, when it called <upon
the strikers to seek other jobs. The union had been paying
the rent, grocery, and utility bills of the strikers and giving
them*s2s a week for pocket money, and the cost of this sup
port was biginning to hurt.
ABOUT 400 STRIKERS LEFT
Seme 400 strikers, many of them aged and unable to
find employment, still are subsisting on union handouts,
and that is all that is left of Local 833. Originally there
were some 2,000 strikers, out of a total pre-strike working
force of 3,300.
