Negroes will occupy posi tions in the commercial and political areas of life in our community that they have never been seriously con sidered for before. The tremendoud participa tion in ‘‘Freedom Walk” has shown the world that in the global awakening to united, progressive action Negroes in Michigan have not been left behind. The political and economic unity develop Housing Survey Touches Dilemmu Information gathered during and since the march of Sunday, —June 23 by a survey of Sunday National Homemakers Guild, Guild., indicates that although housing is one of the fields in which there is great concern open occupancy does not appear, to a sizeable portion of those questioned, to be a practical so lution. One respondent put it this way, “I have been offered an oppo utndy to purchase a GI home in Warren, Michigan and where as I feel that it would altogether benefit my children to live then formative years i:i anew house I it seems unwise to subject them to a continual atmosphere of hate even though I have been •sstired that the state police would take steps to guarantee the safety of the family. "1 have no objection to Negro neighbors. 1 do not believe that the value of my property is di minished if 1 live among my people. "In other American cities I hava scan beautiful developments planned, developed, constructed I and occupied bv Negroes. In »ome of these places children up to fifteen years of age have lived their entire lives in a home at mosphere that is typical of the American Standard of living. “These people concerned them selves with adequate housing for their families. They did not wait for the white population to ad just habits of many generations and accept Negro neighbors. The educational process goes on and the example set by those oc cupying the new communities plays a great part in bringing the realization that Negroes take pride in their homes and their communities, their children and their schools. But most of all their children enjoy the advan 1 uges of living in a home that | contains modern fixtures, large, i dry basement* and yards to play ' in." 970 GRATIOT AVENUE, DETROIT, MICHIGAN ing at the grass roots in the Negro community as the re sult of Sunday’s demonstra tion is amazing. Negroes who are “in a mi nority among Negroes” (a very, very small minority, indeed) have any meaning to the Negro community. It has become “uncom monly clear” to Negroes as individuals just who. among the alleged Negro leaders, will tell them the truth and fight lor their freedom and justice, and who will sell them out and apologize for discrimination. In some instances they have failed. Action h..s already started in that area. The "NEW DAY ' is here. The status quo is altered. Detroit will never be the same. An altogether new sit uation must be reckoned with.
