On a recent visit io the State Farm thc following condition ol idfiirs pre
sented themselves under the most efficient and painstaking care ol its worthy Sup
crintent Col. D J. Griffith, ot' Columbia. He. has on each tann 300 acr^s in cit?
ton and it is a sale calculation and is postively stated that Without a mishap lo
the crop, he will gather 600 balee ot 500 pounds each. This visitor has traveled
considerably throughout the State and is a very large planter himself, his princi
pal topic ot convcrsaiion^being crops, which he admires thc beauty ol almost equal
to lair women-both being productions of Nature-and asserts that, without ex
ception, this tarni is a paragon of excellence beyond compare with any in the
State.
Aside (rom the lact that the cot'.on is generally so very good, there is a 40 acre
field on the DeSaussure side on which a special lest wis made with 'Peruvian
guano." Previous to this year it has been impossible to ptoducc any crop thal
tvould make a satisfactory yield on this land, it hardly paying tb plant cotton on
it; being light soil and full of nut grass They used in producing thc handsome
crop this year 400 pounds' Peruvian guano under the cotton and -J ?0 around crop,
This 40 acres ot cotton held its color well, dark green, all dining thc hot dry spell
ol May and greater part ol Jone and as soon as rain commenced it shot out, and
iias grown beyond expectation-it is loaded with fruii, and i. lite handsomest
piece of cotton on that farm and 2,000 pounds ol seed cotton lo ihc acre will bc a
conservative estimate of the yield
On the adjoining farm there is the same size tract-though bette! ?and- whole
only 400 pounds Peruvian guano was used and it is sale io est?male an equal
yield on this 40 acres. This is also as tine a piece of colton u-> can be shown on
either farm.
