Bc vs Are Watched
When wc see the boys on the
streets and in public places, we of
ten wonder if they kuow that bus
iness men uro watching them, lu
every bank, store, and office there
will soon bo a place for a boy to
fill. Those who have the manage
ment of thc afluir? of business will
select one of the boys.
They will not select one for his
ability to swear, smoke cigarette,
stand around tho church doors
\ and when they get fully scented
'up go inside and disturb the wor
shippers by whispering to their
chums and gazing over the con
gregation, or their ability to play
cards or tap a beer keg.
?STo, the "society swell" who is
daft about little social functions
and is happy in the conceit that he
is "just the article" that youug
ladies (iud indispensable on all
occasions, is given the .'glassy
stare" quite as often as the beer
guzzler or cigarette smoker. Busi
ness men have a few looao habits
themselves; but they aro looking
for boys who are as near gentle
men in every ?enae of the word as
they can find, and they aro able
to give the character of everybody
in the city. They arc not looking
for rowdies. When a boy applies
for one of these places and ia re
fused, they may not tell him the
reason why they ?lo not want him,
but the boy can depend upon it
that he's been rated according to
hU behavior. Boys cannot afford
to adopt tho habits and conversa
tion ol the loafers and rowdies if
they ever want to be called to res
ponsible positions.-Advance.

Watching Tho Farmers Closely.
Thc New York Cotton Market
report stated last Friday that the
market was "weak under further
reports of little reduction in acre
age." Isn't this a significant fact
worth something to thc farmers of
the South? If a mere report of a
decrease or increase in the cotton
acreage is sufficient to raise or low
er the price of cotton in thc New
York market can't the farmers see
what e?'ccta large or small crop
will have on the price of the staple?
If they go foward in thc face of
such facts and plant a big crop of
cotton their policy will be suicidal.
