San Francisco, June 30.—At the eleventh hour, friends
of McAdoo abandoned their effort to prevent his being placed
in formal nomination. His total strength on the first ballot,
according to the latest estimate of the McAdoo supporters,
was approximately 300 votes. Maryland will cast its first
votes for John W. Davis, but the McAdoo supporters expect
Maryland's votes to return after a few ballots. The Cox and

"WET PLANK IN PLATFORM
SECRETARY OF STATE BEFORE COMMITTEE URG
ING LIGHT WINF AND BEER PROVISION.
By the Associated Prbea
San Francisco, June 30. —Several
hours of debate failed to bring the
platform sub-committee Into final
agreement on the prohibition issue.
With Secretary Colby leading the
fight for a light wine and beer plank,
the problem showed signs of becoming
the most troublesome facing the lit
tle circle of platform builders. A
canvass of the sentiment soon after
the meeting began last night is said
to have shown a majority against any
wet declaration, but when the sub
committee came formally to take up
the prohibition proposals in their nat
ural course of its deliberations, it
was decided to reopen the whol e sub
ject.
Besides the plank offered by
Mr. Colby, various wet declarations
in different forms were suggested, and
