TRENCH AND CAMP
|Secretary McAdoo Urges Soldiers =~
To Retain Insurance After War
Secretary of tha Treasury McAdoo
recently issned a statement addressed
to the soidiers and sallors in the
American Army and Navy urging
them to keep up their insurance after
the war officially terminates.
“It is the stromgest, safest and
cheapest life insurance ever written,”
says Mr. McAdoo,
Following is his statement in full:
“] desire to remind ALL
America’s soldiers and sailors
that it is thelr opportunity and
their privilege to keep up their
insurance with the United States
Government after the war has
officially termimated and evemn
after they have returned to civil
life.
‘“More tham four million offi
cers and men of the Army and
Navy are mow imsured with the
United States Government,
through the Bureau of War Risk
Insurance of the Treasury De
partment. The grand total of
insurance is more than thirty.
six billion dollars.
“In fits present form, this in
surance is annual, renewable
term insurance at net peace
rates, issued against death and
total permanent disability. Un
der the provisions of the War
Risk Insurance Act, every person
holding this insurance may keep
it up in this form EVEN AFTER
HE LEAVES THE SERVICE,
for a period of five years. All
that is necessary is the regular
payment of premiums,
“Moreover, the law provides
that not later than five years

after the termination of the war
as declared by Presidential proc
lamation, the term insurance
shall be converted, WITHOUT
MEDICAL EXAMINATION, into
such form or forms of insurance
as may be prescribed by regula
tions and as the insured may re
quest. In accordance with the
provisions of the law, these reg
lations will provide for the right
to comvert into ordinary life,
20-payment life, endowment ma
turing at age 62, and into other
usual forms of insurance. THIS
INSURANCE WILIL, CONTINUE
TO BE GOVERNMENT INSUR
ANCE. The various forms eof
policies which the Bureaun of
War Risk Insurance will write
are now being prepared. |
‘“‘Every person in the military
or naval service owes it to him
self and to his family to hold om
to Uncle Sam’s insurance. It is
the strongest, safest and cheap
est life insurance ever written.
Just as this insurance relieved
our soldiers and sailors of anx
iety and misgivings for the wel
fare of their loved ones and pro
tected them against the hazards
of war, so it will continue to pro
tect them through the days of
readjustment and reconstruc
tion and in time of peace.
‘““The advantages of keeping
this insurance in force cannot be
emphasized too strongly. The
right to continue it is a valuable
right given by the Government
to our fighting part of the men
as compensation for their ser
vices, If this right is lost by
allowing insurance to lapse it
I
Government insurance is
to lapse the holder cannot again
obtain insuramce except from
private companies at a conside
erable increase im cost. Mowe
over, many of the men may have
become unimsurable as a resulf
of the war through physical ba=
pairment, and if these allow
their insurance to lapse they will
lose the last opportunity for
their families to have the protec
tion of life insurance.
‘““The economic value of life
fnsurance to society is so well
recognized as to need mo argu
ment. The Government now has
in force upon the lives of four
million American citizens who
have fought its battles, a life
insurance group larger than all
others combined. Therefore it
is manifestly of the highest im
portance not only to the fighting
+ men and their dependents but to
all the people, that the largest
possible percentage of this in
surance shall be continued in
force after its holders shall be
returned to civil life.”
Secretary McAdoo also announced
that there had been created the Con
servation Section of the Division of
Military and Naval Insurance of the
Bureau of War Risk Insurance.
The duty of this section is to ad
vise soldiers and sailors carrying
Government insurance of their rights
and privileges with respect to com
tinuing their insurance in force after
their discharge from the Army and
Navy and to promote the widest pos
sible dissemination of information
for this purpose.
