BROWN IN CORKING FIGHT: SAVAGE
AND WILLIAMS WRESTLE FOR DRAW

After a vacation of several weeks
John J. Boxing made his reappear
ance in Ihis eiiiv lasi night, and was
given a rousing greeting by a big
crowd which comfortably tilled the
Imperial Valley Athletic club arena.
Tin- fighls. which had been post
ponod from New Year's afternoon
presented all the thrills that make
boxing, and there were few dull mo
ments once the card got under way.

doe Layman put on a s.ashing 10-
lound fight that was crammed full
of action from start to finish. There
have been few fights at the arena
where the boys have traveled so
fast and so hard over the 10 round
route.
Was Crackerjack Draw
To our way of thinking, it was a
eraekerack draw. H. ii Tackett
saw it differently and gave the de- i
vision to Layman, who may have had
a slight edge bul was mighty slight.
There is very little to elioose be
tween Brown and Layman. Both
have plenty of boxing skill, they
win hit bke mines, and they van
take blows that would knock the
ordinary mule off his feet, and
then come hack for more. Time
and again last night when Lt looked
as though one boy was giving in,
he rallied and gave his opponent |
everything.
The only round where either bov
lad a decided edge was the eighth
when Brown unquestionably had Lay .
man in trouble. The latter hung
on and weathered the storm, only
to come back in the ninth as strong
as over and just as willing to trade
punches.
Like Real Rough Stuff
Any lime Brown and Layman are
signed up. they will pack the local
menu, for they are the type of :
fighters that the fans like to see. At
times tlie\ get rough, both of them
doing unorthodox stuff last night
but they apparently like it and
neither than kicked.
The only thing that saved the i
Williams Wav,age fight from being a j
lane, was Wilburns’ evident seri- i
ousness, and his desire to make a
light of it. Savage clowned it'
throughout the fight, opening up
oniv on a few occasions, but he got
a draw out of it. Here again we
< aniiot agree with the referee,
though granting him the right to see
the f ght his own way.
W illiams forced the fighting, and
scored heavily on Savage, but he
lever (lice hurt the bug Herb, lie
might as well have been hitting
the Brooklyn bridge as to be poumt
u g away on Savage's grinning

measured off his man with his left
ami kept his right tied by his side,
over-anxietv or uncertainty as to
where to place the blow, preventing
him from using the right.
Pushing, Shoving Eout
It was largely the old slorv of
pushing and shoving, with none of
tl >< good boxing that came later in
the Brown Layman fight. If Will
iams is to be given credit for try
ing to make a fight of it. credit is
also due Savage for his wonderful
stamina. The old border wathorsc

Jones, Macon, Ga., both bantam
weights, in a ten round bout here
last night.
Detroit—Haul Doyle, New York,
was awarded the decision over Jir -

ten round bout here last night. They
are welterweights.

a permanent training camp by the
San Francisco club of the Pacific
Coast Baseball league was revealed
here today.
Alfred Putnam, secretary of the
Seals, bought for $25,000 the new
Loves Springs postoffiee building
and two adjoining tracts of land
on the Valley of the Moon Highway,
according to Jack Murray, local con
stable, who arranged the deal.
Murray said Puiiiam planned ad
ditional purchases of real estate,
with the purpose of providing a
baseball park, training grounds and
quarters, to be used permanently
by the seals or by any other base
i all clubs desiring to train there.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were men
tioned as likely to do some spring
training here tnis year.
The Heals held spring training
here for many years, but last year
went to Fresno. Decision was reach
ed by the dub management last
month to resume training here.

nated an archbishop and assigned as

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 9—Doc Snell,
northwestern bantamweight, knock
ed down Joey Sangor, Milwaukee,
four times in the first two rounds,
but was lucky to cop the decision
after ten rounds of furious fighting
here last night.
Three times did Sangor go down
for nine counts and once for eight,
but recuperated to outbox Snell by
a wide margin the balance of the
fight.
Ringsiders gave Sangor seven
rc id? Ficll two and one even, but
trie nfcroc’s decision was merited,
in their opinion. Sangor landed
two blows to Snell’s one, but the
latter’s socks were loaded with dyn
amite and hurt Sangor whenever
they landed.
Jack Roper won a fast six round
bout from Jimmy Byrne, in the
semi-windup. The men are heavy
weights.
Johnny Godinez won from A 1 Fu

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9.—Sale of
the Vernon baseball club to Herbert
Fleishhaeker, San Francisco bank
er, representing Stanley Dollar,
shipping magnate, was to be ratified
today at the annual meeting of the
Pacific coast league officials.
The league owners will also sign
papers transfering the Salt Lake
City club to Los Angeles, it has been
agreed.
The Vernon team is to lie moved
intact to the bay city, with William
11. McCarthy, former president or
the coast league, at the head of
the club.
Purchase of the Tigers was ef
fected after more than seven months
of negotiations. Ed It. Maier, who
held the franchise, received between
$200,000 and $225,000 it was said.
J. Cal Ewing, owner of the Oak
land club, is said to have received
$140,000 for withdrawing his right
of protest to the transfer.
Clyde Hitdkins, manager of Aee
Hudkins, ‘‘Nebraska wildcat,” of
fered $22,000 today as a guarantee
to Rocky Kansas, world’s light
weight champion, for a champion
ship battle here.
Budkins said his fighting brother
was ready and anxious to meet Kan
sas here soon, the battle to go ten
