Giants Agree to Assist Hornsby ll y United l*ren« Lenne/1 \%lre NEW YORK, Feb. s.—When the St. Louis Cardinals traded Rogers Hornsby to the New York Giants for Frankie Frisch it was announced that no cash was involved in the deal. But it appeared today after a conference between Presidents Sam Breadon of the Cardinals ami Char les Stem-ham of the Giants that money would be paid by the latter, with Hornsby' the beneficiary. Hornsby had disagreed with Breadon relative to the sale of stock owned by the seeond baseman. The owner is unwilling to pay the price per share asked by Hornsby and the conference with Stoneham was believed to concern this ticklish situation. According to report, the Giants have agreed to pay the difference between Hornsby’s demand and Breadon’s quoted price, but neither president would lend confirmation. Central Union Beats Calexico In one of the most exciting bas ketball games seen here in a long time, Central Union’s “heavy’’ team heat out Calexico last night, the final score being 22 to 21. California Sporting Briefs LOH ANGELES, Feb. 5. A slashing attack that carried King Tut of Minneapolis before it in the last two rounds of the fight, gave Doc Snell, Tacoma junior light weight a ten round referee’s decis ion here last night. The fight could have been called a draw. The affair was rough in spots, witli Tut outboxing the Tacoma fighter, who was warned frequently by the referee for his agressive tac tics that at times verged on being foul. Both fighters started out at a fast pace and Tut’s furious speed in file sixth, seventh and eighth rounds, wore him down to sueh an extent that Snell made the most of it in the closing rounds to take the the decision. They fought at 129 3-4. Billy Hart took a technical knockout over Eddie Haddon in the third round of the scheduled six round semi-final. Haddon took to the canvas six times during the course of the short session. Joe Cordoza lost to Jimmy Lav enthal by a decision in the six round special event. In the second spot Sammy Guidero knocked out Dave Mustaffa in the second round of the scheduled four round event and Goldie Hess took a decision over Herb Turchi in tho curtain ruiser. Occidental is considered the toughest opposition in the league with the exception of Whittier hut the Bruins have been playing fast basketball and are expected to win handily. in two other conference clashes tonight Whittier meets Redlands at Redlands and Pomona plays Caltech at Pasadena. Whittier should win from Redlands with little difficulty while the Pomona-Caltech encounter appears to be a toss-up. Charlio Long, Negro middle weight, and Joe Cordoza have sign ed to fight ten rounds or less, at Fresno next Tuesday it was an nounced here today by Matchmaker Jimmy Murray. unable to get going, while Calexico shot two baskets, bringing its score up to 21. With Central trailing 21 to 18, Coates came to life and with the S]>ect»torß almost going frantic, heaved a shot clear into the basket. Central rooters implored him to re peat the trick and he did, getting liis second basket as easily as he did the first. It was a great finish to a great game, and the spectators were nearly as tired as the players. The Central ‘ ‘ lighties, ’ ’ who were expected to clean up the Calex ico team in the same class, stubbed their toes and took a 15 to 10 wal loping. The lighties still have a chance to get in on the valley championship. The heavy team, how ever, is out of the running.
