ed SU ihon U. Elklns as secretary of
war. Various New Mexico politicians
seem to think this is a great thin? for
the territory as Mr. Elkins used too
he a resident of the territory and Is
liable to help out whenever he get a
chance. This will probably be shown
when It couies to moving the head
quarters of the department of Arizona
from Los Angeles to Santa i e.
In compliance with the order of the
board of commissioners, District At-
tornev Twitchell. al Santa Fe, has
Died flrc suits against the bondsmen
of Flanclsco Chave., the-i ex-shcriff
and collector of Santa Fe county, to
recover the sum of about H.r,000
dne the county. It Is easy enough to
commence a suit, but the Liukual
hopes Santa Fe county will be able to
collect. It. also, would like too see
ürant county do a little collecting.
Senatou Plumb, of Kansas, died in
Washington last Saturday night.,f.oin
a stroke of appoplexy. There I
queer complication of political affairs
in Kansas which this death brings to
notice. The legislature is controlled
by the Farmer' Alliance people, the
governor Is a republican, lie can ap
point a senator to act till th legisla
ture meets, aud if he does not call
special sossion, it will not meet till
after another election, when the
chances are the Alliance people will be
forgotten. It would seem the natural
thing for the governor to appoint ex
Senator Ingalls, but the two gentle
mienarc said not to be on speaking
terms.

Thk Chilian question is again be
coming an important one. The crazy
fellows down there are as full of sand
as any Burapper and seem to be achln
for another fight and want it this time
with Uncle Sam. They refuse to give
any satisfactory answers to the letters
written in regard to the killing of the
sailors from the Baltimore. The
otter day a mob consisting of citizens
and the police surrounded the United
States minister's residence and
threatened to mob him and tbe re
fugees that be is protecting. This of
course has brought out a vigorous
protest from the state department to
which an answer lias not as yet been
made. The navy dep.tnicnt is rush
ing preparations on all the govern
ment vessels which need any work to
fit them for sea. The department has
secured an option on a fast tug In San
Francisco also on a Dumber of vessels
belonging to the Pacific mail line and
to Spreckles. These vessels are to be
used in the case of difficulty to trans
port troops down luto the Chilian
country. Due notice will be given of

with no very hearty welcome. This

covered and look very nice, but cold.
W. II. Small tho druggist, takes
espucial pleasure la supplying bis cus
tomers with the best medicines ob
tainable. Among the many excellent
preparations on his shelves may be
mentioned Chamberlain's Cough
remedy, a favorite during the winter
monttra on account of ito great success
n the cure of colds. There is nothing
that will loosen a severe cold so quick
ly, or so promptly relieve the lungs.
Then it counteracts any tendency
towards pneumonia. It is pleasant
and safe to take, aud fully worthy of
It popularity.
