T. F. COKWÁT,
W. A. HAWKINS.
The republicans of New Mexico,
convention assembled In the city
East Las Vegas, do hereby declare:
We heartily endorse the platform
adopted at St. Louis by the republi
can national convention; we are In
favor of bimetallism or the coinage
and concurrent circulation of both
gold and silver as money, on a parity
with each other in debt paying and
purchasing power.
We are In favor of International bi
metallism Bs a final and desirable set
tlement of the money question, Inas
much as It would open the markets
and. mints of other' nations to the coin
age and use silver as money, and estab
lish and maintain at all times a parity
between the metals.
We believe It to be the duty of the
United States to coin, free of charge,
the product of Its gold and silver
mines, so long as the equality of the
dollars coined can be preserved; we
are opposed to the coinage of foreign
silver in the American mints as an
unjust discrimination by this nation
against its own citizens; and wo de
nounce the democrotic party fur de
claring In its platforms, national and
terrltorltorial, In favor ef opening our
mints to the free coinage of foreign
silver and its refusal to declare in
favor of orescrvlng the parity betweeB
the metals coined, thus endangering
the cqnality-ln the value of our money
and jeopardizing the business interests
of our country with a fluctuating and
unstable currency,
We hold that American citizenship
is underestimated when an American
citizen may be compelled to wait
while foreigners are using our mints
for tho free coinage of foreign silver.
We are opposed to the exclusive use
of gold or the exclusive use of silver as
money metal, but are in favor of the
use of both as a fixed policy ef the
American government.
We demand for all of the industries
of this territory and particularly those
of silver, wool, live stock, hides, coal
timber, lead and fruit growing, such
'.eaislatiop by the congress of the
United States as will protect these in
dustries against the cheap products of
foreign countries,
We demand protection against
cheap foreign labor.
We insist that the laboring classes
should be bettered In their condition
dignified in their character and thel
wages maintained so that they can do'
rive a reasonable product beyond their
actual necessary expenses, and we In
sist that the markets of the United
States, which are the best in the
world, shall be preserved for our own
!".;." people and for our own products.
tlml We favor assistance by the federal
government for the irrigation of all
our lands, and insist that proper
measures shall be adopted under the
interstate commerce power of con
gress to protect the people of this ter
ritory against the unlawful and extra
vagant appropriation of the iwateis'of
any and all strems which rise outside
of this territory and flow Into it, from
wülfb our people derive and have
heretofore dfiived waters for the Irri-
eatlon of their laiuK nd we favor an
extensive si stem of resent;-. "d
water basins, to be constructed by the
federal government in this territory
for the ketternient and development
of our arid lands, and that the same
lands shall bo donated to the territory
under suitable restrictions for its dis
posal and use.
We also favor a system of experi
ments to be adopted and carried on by
the government in sinking artesian
wells on the arid lands, and the devel
opment of water supplies for our agri
cultural and milling In tese9ts, believ
ing that byso doing greatbeneflts will
result to all interests In this territory.
We are opposed to any substitute in
congressional legislation of a free sil
ver provisiou for a tariff measure, or a
tariff measure for a free silver pro
vision, but Insist that all legislation
increase, the debt due bv the eovern
ment to those whose valor presorted
It.
Resolved, That the Infamous cen
duct of the democratic secretary, in
overthrowing the will of the people as
expressed at the last election, when a
legislature republican in both Its
branches was elected; meets the se
verest condemnation of all good gov
ernment. Elections have become a
farce If results are to be changed by a
single appointed officer, and the fun
damental principles of republican gov
ernment, which are that the majority
hall rule, have hereby been entirely
ubverted.
We are In favor of the public cele
bratlon of Labor day, as of 'Other an
nual holidays, and censure thelprcscnt
democratic governor for not issuing a
proclamation for its celebration on the
first day of September last.
The republican party stands for the
nationality of the American govern
ment. This is a nation, aud not a
league of states.
We believe it Is the duty of the gov
ernment, and It has the power, to en
force Its laws in ail parts of the coun
try.
We are In favor of and demand the
immediate admission of New Mexico
as a sovcrign state, in as much as we
now have all the qualifications requir
ed for the admission of other states.
We commend our present delegate
In congress, Hon. Thomas B. Catron,
for his able efforts in behalf of the ad
mission of Sew Mexico as a state, and
other Interests beneficial to the peo
ple of our territory.

GRANT COUNTY llEPfHLICAN PLAT
FORM.
We, the Representatives of the re
publicans of the Grant county, in con
vention assembled, adopt the follow
ing declaration of principles:
We affirm, our allegiance to the re
publican platform and politcles as de
clared in the platform adopted by the
Republican territorial convention, at
Socorro, in 1894.
We endorse and afllrm the platform
adopted at St. Louis, by the National
Republican Convention, excepting the
financial plank thereof.
We believe now, as we did two
years ago, and wo again "declare for
the free and unlimited coinage of sil
ver at a ratio of 10 to 1, Independent
of the concurrence of other nations."
We denounce the policy of the Cle
veland administration for its warfare
upon tho industrial system of the
country, which gave steady employ
ment with fair remuneration to both
labor and capital, substituting disas
ter for prosperity and distress for hup'
piness. And we demand the restora
tion of tariff duties suftlcicnt to pro
tect from the) competition with pro-
ducts of underpaid foreign labor all
tbe products of American Industry,
and espicially tho products of New
Mexico wool, hides, cattle und lead
ores.
We are Insistent in our demand for
statehood for New Mexico and urge
the injustice of being longer held iu a
condition of vassalege and ruled by
unprincipled importations of federil
officials, who are not in sympathy wltL
or biased in füvor of our people.
We insist that there shall be a fair
aud; o ':f "i ministration or tho pen
sion office and timi. tut puubiouur shall
not be discriminated against or forced
to unusual methods luteuded to delay
or defeat his efforts to obtain a Just
recognition of his claim against the
government.
We point with pride to the fact that
legislators nominated und elected by
Grant county republicans, two years
ago, worked und voted for the reten
tion of the fee bill and salaries for
countv officers which tbe law then
provided for, and we poiut to the fact
that the democratic legislature, many
members of which were placed in of
fice by the Illegal acts of the secretary
of the territory, which acts we con
demn, largely increased the emolu
ments of office holders. These emolu
ments are now so large that it Is im
possible for Grant county to pay its
bills, and we demand the passage of a
law by the coming session of the leg'
lative assembly reducing at or.co all
v unity expenses to a reasonable figure,
and pledge all of ourcandidatesto the
support of such a measure.
We call the attention of tho execu
tive officers to the many murders and
robberies which have been committed
in tlio southern part of the county,
aud we demand that the sheriff make
some effort to apprehend criminals in
that section of the county.
We pledge to the people an honest
and economical administration of the
affairs of tho county and a strict com
pliunce with the letter of the law by
our offiolals, aud opposition to all leg
islation that will add to the burdcn;of
taxation.
Resolved, that in the death of Hon
Israel King, of Doming the republican
party of Grant county lost a valiant
champion, who was ever the consist
en t advocate of the true principles of
republicanism, and who faithfully
served In the Legislativo Couucll of
New Mexico, representing Grant and
Dona Ana counties, with credit to
himself and honor to the party and
the whole people; and Resolved, that
the republican party of Grant couuty
bear testimony to his worth as a man
and citizen; his zeal and fairness as a
partisian; his honesty and integrity
and exalted patriotism worthy of
praise aud emulation.
