Tin California papers claim that a California reglmeut Is to lead the ad vance Into Cuba, for the benedt of the generation of Cubans as yet un bora It Is hopd If tills regiment Is anything like the famous "California column" thai came Into New Mexico during the rebellion that they will lie kept out of Cuba. If they get th'-re they will furnish a body of otlh-e hold ers for the futur republic of Cuba that will last for it least two genera tions, and all of t.icni will be colonels. Tim assessor of ti rant coanly is pub lishing a notice in I lie Silver City papers notifying all taxpayers that they must mako their returns to him at his office In Silver City on or before the tenth day of May, and If they do not he will make their returns and add twenty-five per cent to them. It has been the custom fur years for the assessor to visit, each precinct in the county when making his assessment. Tho present assessor declines to do so. Last year he bad a deputy do his work In this section of tho county, but as tbat depnty has not drawn his pay for last year's work be w ill make no assess ment this year. It may be that all taxpayers in tho country will make a trip over to Silrer City for the. purpose of making out their returns to the as scssor, but the LtiiEHAOhas Its doubts about their doing so. Of course if a good deal of property Is missed, be cause the assersor does not get out and look for It, It will not have to pay taxes, but the rest of the property in the county will have to pay that much more, and the assessor will draw about the fame pay from the county for hi work. Assessor Gillctt is reported to be a fnndidate for renomlnation. He may 6ecure the nomination, but the Liberal predicts that the voters of the connty will elect a man who will pay a little atteution to business. There are to be found in the county men who will attend to this business for the emoluments of the ollicc. Tub El Pas '"mes has taken up tho battlo iu favor of the users of coal oil In the territory of íi cw Mexico. It has Just discovered that coal oil costs the consumer about twice as much In New Mexico us it does lo El Taso. It claims thit this is caused by the Iniquitous coal oil In spection law lo tho territory, anil wants to lead the papers of ttie terri tory on a crusado against the law, so an to down the wicked Standard oil company. As on many other occa sions, when the Times has desired to lead a reform, It has got off on the wrong foot. The price of tho oil in the territory Is governed by the Con tinentiai oil company, which is but another name for the Standard oil company, but It is the freight rales that gives it the power to govern the prices of the oil, not the Inspection fees. There win the same difference between the prices of oil In the terri tory and In El I'aso before this law went loto effect tbat there Is now. Since the law went into effect there has been no appreciable difference Iu tbe local price of the oil. The law Is similar to the law In most of the civi lized states, tbe only trouble with It is that It Is not severe enough. The only objection to the law is made by the Continental oil company, which fought bard against its enactment, Tbe people are well satisfied wlMi it for they know that it gives them a safe light. There are laws on the New Mexico statue books which ought to be repealed, but the coal oil inspec tion law 4s not one of them, and it Is doubtful if the Times ever discovers what they are. Gencr.it llerscy stopped from his ar duous labors of recrutlng soldiers last week tu Issue the regular monthly tttatcment of tbe weather in New Mex ico, y tout t we Utara that during the month of March the temperature in New Mexico ranged from zero to eighty-five degrees.
