Sheriff Gocdell and would be Sheriff Farnsworth were visiting here this week. M. Reardon and family, who h'avé tcea en the coast for a month or so have returned to their borne In Clif ton. Tbe fair at Albuquerque commences tieit Tuesday. The managers of tbe fair claim this will be the best one ever. Frank Hudson, who has charge of tbe grocery department of the Arizona copper Company's store at Clifton, was in town Tuesday, talking groceries with some of the Lordsburg mer chants. At tbe tbe democratic caucus held Saturday night in this precinct for tbe purpose of electing delegates to tbe 'county convention the following were elected: Bramble B. Owtiby, II. L. Gammon, Nell McCallum, and J. 13. Jernian. This is understood to be a Blair delegation. S. F. Sullenjerger has resigned the office of cashier of the First national bank of Clifton, and P. P. Greer has been elected cashier In bis plaee. The last statement shows tbe bank to be In a fine condition. Tbe deposits aro over ninety thousand, loans eighty thousand, cash on band and in banks forty thousand, surplus and net profits four thoujaüd. Lester L. Robinson came in from Los Angeles Wednesday, and went up to Steeplerock. Mr. Robinson is one of tbe prominent politicians of Los Angeles, and one of the leaders of the tight that prevented Governor Gage being re-nominated. He is a brotber-ia-iawof Sanford Robinson, republi can candidate for superintendent of schools, and came"down here to take charge of Mr. Robinson's campaign, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Chase, who were out to tbe ranch of tbe X T land and cattle company, as it Is now officially known, returned the latter part of last week, arid Mrs. John McCabe came in with them to spend Sunday. Mrs. McCabe returned b,ome Monday, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. W. II. SajfUl. Mr. Small has recec'tly pur chased an interest in tbe X T ranch, and this Is bis first visit of Inspection to his new property. Owing to bis resignation as agent of the Arizona & New Mexico road at LordnburgC. R. Temple Intends to move from here, and probably from tbe county. For this reason be has resigned from tbe county tlcKet as a candldrte for commissioner. The county central committee will select tbe name of a man to lake his place, and In all probability will select II. G. Shafer, bis name having been recoov mended by several republicans from this section of tbe county. The republicans af Luna county in convention nominated tbe following ticket. Commissioners, first district, Ben Taylor, second district Frank Milllken, third district Volney Rector probate Judge Edw. Penulngtnn, pro bate clerk B. Y. McKeyes, assessor, A. O. Kuotz, collector and treasurer C. J. Kelléy, sheriff Cipriano Baca, superintendent of schools U. F. Duff Messrs. McKeyes, Kelly, Baca and Duff now hold offices to which they are nominated, while Mr. Pennington is the present assessor. Tbe Clifton ball team, wbtcb wen down to Bisbee to play a couple of games last Sunday, lost them both Tbe ball grounds were on a side bill and tbe Clifton players could not eauge their throwing. It often : happened that when the catcbe - threw to second base, which was down " hill, tbe ball would go way above tb baseman's bead, and when tbe fielders would calculate to throw a ball to tbe borne base it would strike the groun long before it got there. These errors were natural, but often costly. The Bisbee players promised to have tbe slag dump levelled off and a good ground prepared tfcfore ttw Cliftoo rarff atfattx. Sow Abort the Great Industry of ttai Seellon of the Warld. GenerM Hela M. Hughes of Denver died last Friday from an attack of pneumonia. For many years General Hughes and C. M. Shannon, who is the general's nepliew, owned the Shannon mine at Cllflon, and they sold It tú tbe Shannon copper com pany. Tbe International smelting and re fining company Is now In process of organization, with a capital of to 000, 000. This company bas tbe exclusive rights to the patent and methods of Professor Charles A. Wessells. Tests marie od a large scale have proved tbat it, can treat lead ores for two dollars a i 'i less than any method of smelting now in operation, and ihut on copper ores it can make a saving of four dollars per ton. One of the first smelters the company will build will be at Aberdeen, two carloads of lum ber, a quanily of pipe and machinery are already ordered. This company will have no connection with tbe smelting trust. It will stand on Its own feet, and do business Its own way, which probably meaos that It soon will come Into opposition with the smelting trust, to which, of course, no person Interested In the produc tion of ore can offer any Objection. T. A. Lister, president of tho North American mining company, who has been here for some time, looking after the Interests of his company, left Sun day, for Albuquerque, near which place he also has extensive mining In terests. While here he put men to work on the Gladiator and Horn Sil ver claims, and kept the men at work on the Cobre Negra. On this property the Incline Is now down seventy-three feet, and a drift bas been run ninety two feet, from this an uprise will be made to the surface, for the purpose of ventilating. Mr. Lister will return to Pennsylvania, and consult with the directors of the company about sink ing a deep shaft. Tbe Eagle drug mercantile company bas offered a thousand dollars to the person who will sink a thousand reel. In the Virginia district, and Mr. Lister is considering the proposition, and will probably go after the money. The ore showings In all the properties of the North American are very tine, this is especially true of the Corbe Negra. It will be remembered by many tbat some years ago when John LeeCb man of the Shakespeare raining com pany was running the 85 and other ad jacent mines in Shakespeare, he ran a targe bill with the Roberts & Leahy mercantile company, which bo eglected paying, whereupon1 the company sued him, got judgment, the iicriff attached the mines, and sold them a year ago Sunday. In case of a sheriff's sale the owner has a year in which to pay up and redeem tbe property During the past year Leechman has been trying to sell ibe properties for enough to pay this udgement. aud a little over, but was ot successful. It was reported tbat Leechman had the money In the bank t Silver City to pay It off, but would not do it until the last minute. If this Is so be held oa,V the money a little too long, for he did not repre sent on Monday, which was the last ay, and Tuesday morning Sheriff Goodell made bis deed to tbe Roberts & Leahy mercantile company for the mines. It Is said there is enough ore on the dumps to pay tbe Judgment. Tbe company was held out of tbe money for a long time, but it bas got some of the best property in tbe Vir ginia district, which will amply repay It, and ,be officers of the company smile complacently over the deal. Dr. Coocker w is over to Sliver City this week attending tbe meeting of the board of county commissioners. It Is reported 1 1 the board tbat tbe Santa Fe company Is going to appeal from tbe declaim of Judge Parker de claring the Imposing of a tax to pay Judgments against the county to be legal. It Is reported that each mem ber of tbe supreme court has decided a similar case in the district court, and the decisions have been unani mous tbat the levy was a legal one. Unless they all go back on their for mer decisions the railroad company will lose. The commissioners allowed various bills, and appointed tbeludges of election. For t'.iis precinct they are O. R. Smyth. J. A. Leaby and II. L. Garbmon. The commissioners ap pointed narry Armstrong justice of the pfiace and Pete King constable at Hachita. Reports from the Silver City caucus Indicate tbat it was in much a cutand dried, prearranged affair as tbe beef trust, so much beloved by the demo cratic organ. The six leading oandl dates, tbe ones who have a tight 00 hand arranged the affair and divided tbe spoils. Tbe division consisted in giving Flenilng, Younir, Carvil, Bible, Davirlsnn, and Gillette each three delegates. Each one picked out bis men and they were put on tbe list. This left two more delegates to choose. Candidate Walton, who has no oppo' sltion, was allowed to select one dele' gate, and Candidate White, who also bas a clear field for tbe nomination, was allowed to select one. Tbey were given this sop not because tbey need ed It but because "six into two won't go" and the division could not be made. The caucus was over before tbe attendants bad got settled In their seats. It Is said tbe outside precincts are beglning to kick at the trust methods of tbe Silver City crowd. Tbe present indications at tbe county seat are that Conant for sheriff, Fleming for treasurer, and Bible for assessor. Walton and White have a walkaway. Tbe Indications are that there will be fun in Silver City Saturday, and a but time la town that night. '. I. B. He con siders him one of the best railroad men now iu t he holiness. Harry Hdw ley, of Chicago, was in the city a few days this week, visit Ing his sister, Mrs. R. M. Kedzle. He Learned a O mat Truth. It Is said of John Wesley tbat be once said to Mistress Wesley: "Why ao you ten mat cnnn the same thing over and over again?" "John Wesley, because once telling Is not enough." It is for this sume reason tbat you are told again and again that Chamber lainscoiigb retuedv cures colds and grip; that it counteracts any tendency of these diseases to result In Dneu- monla, and tbat it is pleasant and safe to take.
