Mrs. Paylor Shannon and son Lloyd, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. A. S. Goodell, Miss Goorlcll, and Miss Mlnta Vaughn, were In the city Monday, en route to Clifton, where Mrs. Shannon expects to entertain her visitors. J. B. Foster, secretary of the Bon ney mining company, arrived from Chicago the flrstof the week. Mr. Fos ter's trips from Chicago are so fre quent that be is contemplating mak ing his headquarters here, and make trips to Chicago. Ed. Schultz, who travelled through this section for many years, was back in town again last Sunday, at bis old business. Sloce being here be has luado a trip to the South and Central America, but found no country to com piro with this. O. J. Graniley, tbe Southern Pacific yard master, who was taken to tbe hos pital at El Paso, last week, with a bad ly crushed foot, bad to bave tbe foot nmpulated. Reports from tbe hos pital say that he Is doing well, and a speedy recovery Is expected. The Rip Van Winkle show drew a large crowd Monday night, and most of the people who attended were great ly pleased with the play. There were a few in the audience who had seen Joe Jefferson play Rip, and felt In duty hound to deduce the show a base Im itation. Both Clifton and Lordsburg are be coming quite metropolitan. Last week Thursday there was a baud concert In tbe plaza at Clifton, tbe Clifton band for tbe first time appearing In public, and Saturday afternoon there was a band concert in tbe public plaza in Lordsburp, the city fathers having se cured the services of tbe famed eighth iufautry band for tbe purpose. Tbe Shannon company's converters wero put In operation last week and the company is now reducing its own matte to copper. Heretofore this work Las been done by tbe Arizona com puny, but,the Shannon company ex pects to be able to do it cheaper than tbe price It was necessary to pay. Be sides Ibis tbe copper will go into tbe market with Its own brand. J. A. Leahy will start work on tbe Eighty-five group, which be Intends to make a regular shipper. Tbe work will be under the direction of A. J. Fitch, tbe well known mining en gineer. Large bodies of ore bave been developed In these properties, and they should be steady producers. The last day of February was Ash Weduesday, tbe first day of Lent. It is recorded that many years ago a Pope made a special dispensation for tbe people who live in this section. . A similar game was tried in a saloon tbe same day, but tbe bar keeper was on, and it did out work. The Old Dominion company bad a serious Are last week. It Is claimed the stock has an Intrinsic value of $50 per share. Saturday a couple of special trains, carrying the eighth infantry, was In town for several hours. The locks and binges for the doors are ex pected daily, while tbe brick for tbe foundations and the lumber for tbe floor Joists may not bo here for some weeks. Foreman Grant refuses to build either the cornice or tbe roof un til tbe foundations of the buildlog are laid. He says they will be In tbe way. Tbe new uolon depot at El Paso Is finished, and tbe trains commenced to travel in and out of tbe structure yes terday, and tbe people of tbe village at the pass are proud of tbe new 1300V 000 buildlog. Tbe Union Depot com pany gave a bouse warming Tues day evening, to wblch everybody was Invited, and the visitors had a most enjoyable time. Tbe buildlog is all completed except tbe lunch counter arrangement. Tbe eating concession was let to Fred Harvey, aod after tbe contract was made there was not suf ficient time In wblch to get In the furniture necessary - for- that depart ment, and it may be several weeks be fore the dining room will be In com mission. There will be some twenty five trains a day la and out of tbe buildlog. ' A theatrical coinpaoy was billed to present Dora Tborne at Prettyman's opera house In Clifton last Tuesday night. Tbe company came from tbe eaafc, aod was due In here on the wet bound passenger train Tuesday after noon. The train was reported an hour aod a half late, which would make it miss connections with the Arizona & New Mexico road by a few minutes. The Arizona & New Mexico tralo was ordered to wait for tbe theatrical troup. Then tbe Southern Pacido fell dowo, aod the train did not leave here for Clifton until balf past live. It got to Clifton before elgnt o'clock, aod the curtain went up it balf past nine, and tbe audience eojoyed the play. Tbe Clifton Herald reports that tbe Arlzooa copper company Is going to' staodardlze the gauge of its road from Clifton to Longfellow, over which all of tbe ore used by tbe Arizona and tbe Shaooon com pa o les Is hauled. This road was originally built wit h a twenty Inch gauge. Wben tbe road from Cllf- too to Lordsburg was standardized tbe ''baby gauge' was made a three foot gauge. While here last week Surveyor Pow ei ran the Hoe for a tramway to oor - oect Pyramid with tbo railroads In town. Some of the people Interested In tbe mines at Pyramid contemplate tbe building of a narrow gauge rail road from Pyramid Into town, for tbe purpose of transporting ore from tbe camp to the railroads. The survey showed It would he a down bill pull all tbe way, and with properly arranged loading bins and dump cars tbe mat ter of getting the ore to the railroad can be economically managed. Sur veys were also made to various mines along tne line, as they get to be pro ducing properties tracks will be built to tbem, aod their ore handled by tbls company. The company to build the road bas not yet eotirely perfected its organization, but the Liberal Is as sured that as soon as tbe preliminaries are arranged work will begin on cons truction. John Miller aod W. C. McDermott were bere tbe first of the week for the purpose of looking at the strike made by tbe Harrington brothers. They In spected tbe property and took a large number of samples, but expressed no opinion as to the meritof the property. These gentlemen are brotbers-ln-law, aod Mr McDermott married a sister of Mrs. Jobo T. McCabe, and while here they visited with Mr. and Mrs. McCabe. Mr. McDermott has been mlniog at Cooks for some years, but expects to close out bis lease. there very soon aod move to Los Angeles. Last Saturday the east bound pas senger train, while climbing the hill from Simon to Steins, went Into the ditch, owing to the sudden discovery of a piece of bad track. The train was runoiog slowly, owing to the steep grade, and tbe shock of leaviDg the track was not severe. All of the cars, excepting tbe two rear pullman? went off tbe track, but not a person was hurt. Tbe wrecking trains that went out did not bave to carry a doctor. Tbe track was repaired, but tbe cars did ootget through until tbe next day.
