According- to present plans and
arrangements, now being negotiat

the biggest gala day ever known to
Lordsburg or southern Grant coun
ty. The event will be the driving
of the copper apike connecting the
main line of the Arizona and New
Mexico Railway with the Hpur to
the Virginia Mining district, tind
also Labor day.
The officials of the A. & N. M.
expect to hfive the road completed
and ready for regular service by
that date, however ore Wauling

vork to put the finishing touches
-o the curves and right of way, but
by September C everything is ex
pected to be in readiness.
Mr. Lcrabee, promoter of the Gilbert-George
fight, is attempting to
iet up a big fight and wrestling
card for September G, and has writ
ten Mr. Franz of Clifton in an ef
fort to get Al VVassem (Kempt)
here on that day. Mr. Larabee
promises to stage one of the best
athletic events ever shown in this
section.
There is no doubt but that with
the aid of the two railroads, the
mining companies ana the mcr-
"hants of this city, one of the big
Test celebrations ever known to
this section could be held.
R. K. Minson, general freight
and passenger agent of the A. &. N.
M., stated that his company would
contribute toward making such a
elcbration a success. W. E.
3arr.es of the Southern Pacific said
:hat the Espec would also help in
-he big event ar.d it is understood
ihat all the local mining companies
together with the business men of
Lordüburg will aid. There is nc
reason why the celebration should
not eclipse any similar event ever
held in the Southwest.

WILNA TO THE FRONT
C. W. Piirehe!, mayor of Wilna
(thr.t's the little settlement just
jefore you get to Gage on the S. P.

Tuesday making purchases at the
'ocal stores. Mr. Puschel settled
at Wilna some time ago and has
drilled two wells there. He hap
built a modern dwelling house and
has brought settlers to the camp.
All are making good, and Mr.
Puschel is out after more settler..
'I'll make a town or a graveyard
out of Wilna," stated the mayor,
with a look of confidence that
showed the .latter wasn't in it.
There will be a school at Wilna this
year and a postnffice will be estab

heart of the best country in south

settle up fast.
SAN SIMON IS SUSPICIOUS
Minus any incriminating bag-
gape and with coat thrown back
showing no presence of "What
makes Lord;burg famous (much
to the disgust of the constable and
peace officers), the Western Lib
eral blew into San Simon, Ariz.,
last Friday and proceeded to t: ke
in the sights. At the view of a
Lordsburgan, "A-hem," "A-hem,"
was begun, several snake bites
were reported, but we still plead
Not guilty. San Simon is going
to boom again ere long ar.d this
time the noise will reach far and
wide. The valley is more or less in
the experimental stage of agricul
ture but she is a comer." The ar
tesian water captivates the eye and
the alertness of the citizens rnakes
one like the little town right off the
reel. Jup. Pluv. has given San Si
mon the shakes this year and there
has been no rain, but the artesian
water flows and flows. We found
Editor White of the Eelt to be all
the booster we had expected him
to be. Town-Dad Sleigh was on the
job to show us what can be done
in the valley and the business men
were all sanguine for the "big
time" coming. For its youth San
Simon is looking healthy. The tip
is: "Keep your eyes on San Simon
and the San Simon valley."

LORDSBURG MAY SEE
THE LIBERTY RELL
Some months ago E. R. Vallan
digham of the Deming Headlight,
W. E. Barnes cf the Espee, Gover
nor William C. McDonald, and
others, practically secured the
routing of the Liberty Bell, en
route to Philadelphia from the Pa-
np.ma-t acinc exposition, over the
Southern Pacific through Yuma,
Tucson, Ber:.on, Lordsburg and
Deming. At this late day press re
ports have been sent out to the ef
fect that the Liberty Bell may be
sent over the El Paso and South
western from Tucson, thus elimi
nating Lordsburg and Deming
from the itinerary. Every person
desiring to see the famous relic
that first heralded our indepen
dence, should expend every effort
to have the Liberty Bell come
through Lordsburg and Deming.
A petition should be circulated nnd
those in charge of the routing of
the bell notified of the desire of the
people of southern New Mexico to
see the precious emblem of liberty.
Lordsburg should aid Deming, who
rightly deserves to have the Lib
erty Bell touted her way.
John G. Schwemmer, who with
his wife, is visiting their son, W.
F. Ritter, and who was for mnny
years a resident of Philadelphia,
ha3 volunteered to aid Lord.iburg
in securing the routing of the Lib
erty Bell through this "ity. Mr.
Schwemmer is well known and is
quite influential in the Quaker City
and his influence will no doubt be
effective in getting the commission
to hold to the original routing.
MARY PÍCKF0RD IN
"HEARTS ADRIFT"
Mary Tickford, "the sweetheart
of America," in the famous Para
mount photo drama, "Hearts
Adrift," will be shown at the Star
theater tonight (Friday). The fea
ture is being brougnt here by Man
ager D. W. Briel at a very large ex
pense and will no doubt be suen by
a p:.cKed house. It is safe to say
that "Hearts Adrift" is the biggest
feature ever shown at the local
moving picture house.
The famous movie actress, Mary
Pickford, takes the title role of the
drama and has captivated all
America with her portrayal of the
marooned girl in "Hearts Adrift."
The plot deals with a man and girl
who are left as the only survivors
of a shipwreck on a desert island.
In later years the wife of the man
arrives on the scene and he return?
to America. The climax is thrill
ing and the entire five reels are
intensely intersting and holds the
audience from the very first turn
of the crank. Those who enjoy the
highest class of movies should not
miss this show.
Saturday night will be comedy
night and on Sunday a Los An
geles feature will be shown. The
bill will be announced later. ,
Next Friday John Barrymore in
"An American Gentleman," will be
i;hovvn. This is another Paramount
feature.
Peter Wehner in all his corpu
lency left Thursday evening for El
Paso where he will spend a few
weeks. Later he will leave for Lot
An:;eies and San Francisco, where
he will take in the sights. After
viewing the exposition he will go
by water to the Panama canal and
wind up in Lord.sburg by rail as the
canal hasn t come up this far yet
Uncle Pete will bo missed by all the
children of Lordsburg, to whom he
has donated candy and nickels, be
side 20 new bicycles. Uncle Pete
hasn't had much success with his
mine this time, but when he comes
back he is going at it again. He
has that confounded El Puso stick
to-it-iveness and is more likely
than not to make a rich strike
some day. Everyone will miss Un
ele Pete and await his return.
Dr. J. P. Martin left Saturday
for Silver City, where he will take
life easy for few months. Dot-
said he wasn't going to Silver City
to bawl-out any of the county ofli
cials, to buy a mine, look at a Hood

there be any in Silver iCty. Ht
