Tho word fistuln Is applied to any ulcerous lesion upon the external sur face oí the body which Is connected by ducts, or passages, with some internal cnvlty. Fistulas may exist In, uny part of tho body, but the name hus come to bo commonly accepted us applicable onjy to such lesions when found upon the withers. Poll evil Is n Ústuln upon the poll, and In no sense differs from fistulous withers except In location. Tho description of fistula will apply, then, In tho ninln, to poll evil equally well. Qulttor presents the character istic tubular passages of a fistula nnd may, therefore, bo considered and treated ns fistula of the foot. Fistulous passages may ulso bo developed upon tho sides of tho face, through which saliva is discharged Instead of flow ing Into the mouth, nud urc called sali vary fistulus. A dentnl fistula muy arise, from the decay of tho root of n tooth. Again, a fistula Is sometimes noted ut tho navel ussoclutcd with hernia, and fistulas have been devel oped In mares, following difficult partu rition. Fistulas may nriso from wounds of glandular organs or their ducts, and thus we have the so-called mammary or lacrimal fistulas. Fistulous tracts aro lined with a false membrane and show no disposi tion to heal. They constantly afford means of exit to tho pus discharged by tho unhealthy parts below. They aro particularly liable to develop ut the withers or poll because of tho ex posed positions which these parts oc cupy, and, having once become loeuted there, they usually assert a tendency to further extension, because the ver tical and laminated formation of the muscles and tendons of these parts allows tho forces of gravitation to as sist the pus In gaining tho deeper-lying structures and also fuvors Its retention among. thetn. Causes. Fistulas follow as a result of ab scesses, bruises, wounds, or long-continued Irritation by tho harness. Among tho moro common causes of fistula of tho poll (poll evil) aro chafing by the halter or heavy bridle ; blows from the butt-end of the whip; tho horso striking Ms head against the hayruck, beams of tho ceiling, low doors, etc. Fistulous withers aro seen mostly In those horses that have thick pecks ns well ns those that are very high In tho withers; or, among saddle horses, those thnt uro very low on the withers, the saddle here riding forward und bruising the parts. In cither of these locutions ulcers of the sklu, oi; simple abscesses, If not properly und punctually treuted, muy become fistu lus. They aro often caused by bud fitting collars or saddles, by direct in juries from blows, nnd from the horse rolling upon rough or sharp stones. Tho pus burrows und finds lodgment deep down between tho muscles, nnd escupes only when the sinus becomes surcharged or when, during motion of Iho purts. tho matter Is forced to the surface. Symptoms. These, of course, will vnry accord ing to tho progress made by the fistula. Following un Injury there muy bo soro aess or stiffness of the front legs, md upon careful examination of the withers smnll tortuous linos running from the point of Irrltntion downward iud biickwurd over tho region of tho shoulder may bo seen. These uro swol len nnd painful to tho touch. In u duy sr two u swelling Is noticed on ono or both sides of tho dorsul vertebrae, ivhlch Is hot, painful, und rapidly en larging. The stiffness of the limbs amy disappear at this time, und the beat und sorenoBS of the parts muy become less notlcenble, but tho swell ing remains and coutluues to enlarge. A fistulous ulcer of tho poll may be first Indicated by tho opposition which tho unlmul offers to tho application of Btablo brush or bridle. At this timo the parts ure so soro nnd sensitivo thut there Is sonio danger thnt unless Han dled with tho greatest euro the patient will ucqulre dlsngrcenblo stable habits. Tho disease In Its early stages may bo recognized ns n soft, fluctuating tu mor surrounded by Inflammatory swell ing, with the presence of enlarged lymphatic vessels and stiffness of the neck. Later tho Inflammation of the surrounding tissues may dlsuppenr, leuvlug a prominent tumor. Tho swell ing, whethor situated upon tho bond or tho withers, mny open nnd form n run ning ulcer, or Its contents mny dry up and leavo a tumor which grndunlly de velops tho common chnructerlstlcs of a fibrous tumor. When tho enlarge meut hns opened, carefully examino Its cnvlty, as treatmont will depend whol ly upon Its condition. Treatment, In the earliest stnge, when thero Is soreness, enlarged lymphatics, but no well-marked swelling, tho trouble muy freauently bo aborted. To do this re quires both general nnd local treat ment. A physic should bo given, nnd tho horso receive ono ounco of poW' Jered sultpcter three times n day In his water or feed. If the fever runs hlEh, 20-droi) doses of tlncturo of aconite root every two hours may be administered. Tho local application of cold water to tho inflamed spot for an hour at a timo three or four times a dny, has often proved very beneficial, nnd has afforded great relief. Cooling lotions, murlnto of ammonia, or saltpeter and water; sedativo washes, such ns tincture of opium nnd aconite, chloroform liniment, or cam phorated oil, are also to bo frequently applied. Should this treatment fall to check tho progress of tho trouble, tho formation of pus should be hastened as rapidly as possible. Hot fomenta tions nnd poultices nrc to be constant ly used, nnd ns soon ns tho presence of pus can be detected, the abscess wall Is to bo opened nt Its lowest point. As with any simple nbsccss, If dralnnge enn bo so provided that tho pus will run off ns fast as formed without re maining within the Interstices of the tissues, the healing will bo rapid nnd satisfactory. CLIMBED STAIRS ON HER HANDS Too IU lo Walk Upright Operation. Advised. Saved by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Application of Caustics. If tho nbsccss has already oponed, giving vent to a quantity of purulent matter, and the pipes und tubes lead ing from tho opening rre found to be extensivo nnd surrounded with thick fungoid membranes, ;hero Is consider able danger thut the Internal ligaments or even somo of tho bones have be come uffected, In which enso tho con dition has assumed n serious nspect. Or, on the other hand, If tho abscess 1ms existed for some time without n rupture, Its coijicnts will frequently bo found to consist of dried purulent matter, firm nnd dense, nnd the walls surrounding tho mass will be found greatly thickened. In such n case the application of caustics will cause a sloughing of nil of tho unhealthy tis sue, nnd will also stlmulnto a rapid increase of healthy material to replace that destroyed In the course of the de velopment nnd treatment of the dis ease. Threads or cords soaked In gum- arable solution nnd rolled In powdered corrosivo sublimate may be Introduced Into the canal nnd allowed to remain. Tho skin on nil parts of the shoulder und leg beneath the flstuln should be curefully greased with lard or oil, ns this will prevent tho dlschnrgo that comes from tho opening nftcr tho cnus tic Is Introduced from Irritating or blistering tho skin over which It fldws, In obstlnuto cases a piece of caustic potash (fused) 1 to 2 Inches in length may be Introduced into the opening, nnd should be covered with oakum or cotton. Tho horse should then be se cured so that ho cannot reach the part with his teeth. After the caustic plug has been In place for 21 hours, It may bo removed und hot fomentations ap plied. As soon ns the dlschnrgo has become again established the nbsccss should bo opened from Its lowest ex tremlty, nnd the passage thus formed mny bo kept open by the Introduction of n seton. If tho pipes become estab lished In the deep tissues beneath the shoulder blade or nmong tho spines of the vertebral column, It will often bo found impossible to provide proper drainage for tho nbscess from below, and treatment must consist of caustic solutions carefully Injected Into all parts of tho suppurating sinuses. A very cffectlvo remedy for this purposo Is one ounce of chloride of zinc In halt n pint of water, Injected three times during n week, after which a weak so lution of tho samo may bo occasional ly Injected. Injections of Vlllato's so lution or alcoholic solution of corrosivo iiubllmatc, strong carbolic ueld, or pos sibly oil of turpentine will nlso prove beneficial. Pressure should bo npplled from belov, nnd endeavors made to heal tho various pipes from the bot tom. Majority of Cases Curable. Although the successful treatment of fistulas requires time und patience, tho mnjorlty of cuses nro curable. Tho sinuses must bo opened nt their lowest extremity nnd kept open. Caustic ap plications must bo thoroughly used once or twice, nfter which mild as tringent antiseptic wnshes should bo persistently used until u euro Is reached. It sometimes happens thnt tho ero sions have burrowed so deeply or In such a direction that tho opening of u driilnngo passage becomes Impracti cable. In other cases tho bonos mny bo uttacked In some inaccpsslblu loca tlon, or the Joints may bo uffected, und In these cases It Is often best to de stroy tho horse nt once. The renppearnnco of tho fistula af ter It has apparently healed Is not un common. Tho secondary attack In these cases Is seldom bcrlous. Tho lesion should be curefully cleaned und afterwards Injected with u solution of zinc sulphate, 20 grains to tho ounce of water, every Second or third day until a euro Is effected. In fistula of tho foot there Is tho Hamo tendency toward the burrowing of puo downward to lower structures, or in somo cases upward towurd the coronet. 1'rlor to tho development of u qulttor thero Is nlwuys swelling nt tho coronet, accompanied with heat nud pain. Every offort should now bo mudo to prevent the formation of an nbscose at tho point of Injury. Wound cuused by nails, gravel, or uny othor foreign body which mny have lodged In tho sole of tho foot should bo opened nt once from below, so as to allow free exit to nil purulent discharges. Should tho Injury hnvo occurred directly to tho coronet the nppllcntlon of cold fo mentations may prove efficient In pre venting the formation of un nbsccss, Buctorlul vacclnos composed of sev eral strains of tho organisms usually found In these pustulnr Infections of tho horso nro well udnpted to the treat ment of theso diseases. The vaccine Is administered subcutnncously by means of n syringe, but tho qunntlty of tho vaccine to bo injected nnd the numbor of doses to bo used should be toft to tho Judgmont of a competent veterinarian.
