" "I will remain in the territory fnd will go into business as soon as pos sible. I will always work for the ter ritory's interests and its. people and will do all in my power to further the interests of statehood." , That . Governor Curry's intentions were to resign in the near future was prompted by the feeling that Presi dent Taft was not in accord with the territorial administration and rwith his official acts, thereby showing a lack -of confidence in him, cannot be denied. The executive is a southern er and is of a bensitive and high strung temperament The refusal of his request to go to Washington made by Secretary of the Interior Balllnger was, the governor thought, entirely unwarranted, so he quit. , Governor Curry has held the office a little over a year and eight months. He was named to succeed H. J. Hag erman, whose resignation was called for in May, 1907, after charges had been filed against "him. Curry was in the Philippines at the time, serving as governor of the island of Samar and was named by the president who se lected him without consulting any of the party leaders in New Mexico. He took office on August 8, 1907. - Curry was entirely satisfactory to all factions, and although he assumed the gubernatorial office at the time when matters were in a chaotic state In the territory, incident to the Inves tigation of alleged land and timber frauds In the territory, then under way by special agents of the general land office and the interior depart ment' he soon restored harmony and during his term as governor, territor ial affairs have been better adminis tered from the standpoint ,pf harmony than for many years. Curry is popular with the masses and a etof m of protests has already gone up as a result of his reslgna-. tion. Telegrams from all over the territory poured in to the executive office today, calling upon' him to re consider his resignation and continue as governor. He has acted, he says, and u&der no circumstances, will he remain in office.
