Crlmmlus, who has been designated head of a conftnlttee of New Yorkers to greet Cardinal Farley upon his return from Rome January 16, is a first cousin of the Misses Mary and Nora Crimmins of this city. He Is a brother of Thom as Crimmins, who died last fall and left over $1,000,000 to charitable Institutions. The social given last evening in the O. R. C. hall by the Knights of Co lumbus was a success from every standpoint. A good sized crowd was present and dancing was enjoyed until 12 o'clock. Refreshments were served. The Knights have announced that they give a St. Valentine's ball on the evening of February 14 in the armory. Committees have been selected and will make every effort to make the dance a big success. There will be a general meeting of Congregation Montefiore in the temple Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The gathering is for the purpose of elect ing officers and transaction of other Important business. A large attend ance of the members of the congre gation is hoped for. Attorney C. D. Cleveland of Las Ve gas has entered into a co-partnership with Attorney F. C. Wilson of Santa Fe. Mr. Wilson was associate in law with the newly elected judge of the supreme court, Robert H. Hanna, who, since commencing on his new duties gave up his law practice. Mr. Cleve land, while in Las Vegas, was asso ciated with Jones and Rogers and came into prominence over the state during the recent election taking the stump in the interests of the progres sive republicans. At the annual meeting of tho stock holders of the First National bank, Tihich was held Tuesday, the board of directors of that institution was re elected. Reports for the year showed the bank to be in a nourishing condi tion. Jefferson Raynolds was re-elect ed president. E. D. Raynolds, who has transacted the duUes of cashier for several years, was chosen vice presi dent and S. B. Lewis, Jr., who recent ly became a director, was also made vice president. Hallett Raynolds, as sistant cashier, was elected cashier, while H. Erie Hoke was chosen to succeed Mr. Raynolds. BERT DAVIS SAYS HE WILL NOT CONFESS MAN ACCUSED OF BRIBING M'NA- MARA JURY WILL NOT 8EEK LENIENCY Los Angeles, Jan. 12. Le Compte Davis, attorney for Bert Franklin, the McNamara detective charged with jury bribing, stated positively today that his client would make no con fession to obtain clemency. It was 'authoritatively stated today that the reason for the grand jury's adjourn ing yesterday until Monday was to await the outcome of tomorrow's pro ceedings in the Franklin case. A motion was made today in the federal district court to set aside the indictment charging Tveitmoe, .Tohan sen, Clancy and Munsey the coast la bor leaders, with having conspired to transport dynamite from the east into California. Arguments were set for January 29. The opening game of the basket ball season will be played tonight In the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium between the team of the Las Vegas High school and the one representing the business men's class of the associa tion. Both teams are in fine condi tion and ready for the tray. Playing before the largest audience of the season the Nordica Concert company of Topeka, Kan., the third Santa Fe reading room entertainment to be seen in Las Veg&s this winter, proved itself well deserving of the name under which it travels and com pletely won its audience. The pro gram was entirely classical and every one of the four performers showed himself an artist in his line. Miss Jessica Tipton, around whom the en tire company centers, and who is a protege of Nordica for whom the com pany is named, possesses a voice of remarkable sweetness and expression. She won many encores. The other three members of the company, Floy Ebert, violinist; Marion Myers, pianist and H. Sargent Brownwell, cellist, ablv assisted Miss Tipton in the pro gram of the evening. equally confident that they can take the students to a cleaning. Captain Truder of the High school will not announce his lineup until just before the game. The business men's line up will be as follows: L. F. B. T. Mills; R, F., J. C. Baker, C. Marwick: L. G., Ted Hayward; R. G., L. W. 11 feld; W. C. Dennis, substitute. The game is scheduled to start at 8:15 o'clock. Paul Schoeny will act as i e feree and Julius Krause as umpire. STEARNS PURE THINGS TO EAT DOCTOR PLEADS GUILTY TO CHARGE OF MURDER HARRY WEBSTER KILLED YOUNG WIFE WHOM HE MARRIED ONE YEAR AGO. Oregon, 111., Jan. 12. Dr. Harry E. Webster pleaded guilty to murder in the Ogle county court here today on the first anniversary of his marriage to Bessie Kent Webster, whom, by his own confession, he killed near here last September. Webster with drew a plea of not guilty previously made by him. Webster was charged with murder ing his wife in a wood between Dixon and Polo, 111., last fall. Webster's at torneys said they would place no wit nesses on the stand. Attorney John E. Erwin of Webster's counsel, in a brief statement after the defendant was taken before Judge Farrand, an nounced formally that his client de sired to enter the ilea of guilty. Webster then made the plea of guilty in person and seated himself at the side of his mother, who wjppt quietly throughout the proceedings. State's Attorney Emerson placed several witnesses on the stand to pre sent certain features of the state's case. Dr. L. M. Griffin of Polo, who made an examination of Mrs. Web ster's body, testified that Mrs. Web ster's death was due to a knife wound in the neck which had severed the jugular vein. Dr. Griffin also described an operation, which he said had been performed on Mrs. Webster some time before her death. Judge Farrand said he probably would sentence Webster next week.
