SOCORRO'S HONORED DEAD.
Will Lundy Dies In tils Country's
Service. The Remains to be

Mrs. A. Mayer received the sad
intelligence this week that her
jiephew Will Lundy died in the
Sarita Mesa hospital in Manila,
Philippine Islands, August 14,
oí bronchi-pneumonia complicat
ed with acute dysentery. De
ceased grew from boyhood ' to
manhood in this city. 'He en
listed in the U. S. volunteer army
in August, 1899, was assigned to
troop A of the 11th cavalry, and
sailed from San Francisco on
the transport Warren for the
Philippines. The remains were
shipped from San Francisco yes
terday evening ana are expected
to reach this city Monday morn
ing for burial. The funeral will
be from the depot at 10 o'clock a.
m. Friends and acquaintances
iare invited to unite in paying a
last tribute to the memory of
Socorro's only offering upon the
country's altar.
Mayor Cortinas this morning
issued the following
Proclamation.
As Mayor of the City of So
corro, I hereby request that all
city officials, the hose company,
and all civic orders meet at the
depot at 10 o'clock a. m. Monday,
October 1, for the purpose of at
tending the funeral of socorro s
first and only soldier boy, Will
Lundy, who gave up his young
life for his country.

The crowd that celebrated San
Miguel's day in Socorro was a
large and well conducted one.
No drunkeuess or disorder were

tion. Ringing Reso
lutions. A Strong
Delegation.
Pursuant to the call of the
chairman of the county central
committee, the republicans of
Socorro county met in conven
tion at 2 o clock this afternoon
for the purpose of electing 8 dele
gates to represent the county at
the territorial convention in
Santa Fe next Wednesday for
the nomination of a republican
candidate for delegate to con
gress.
The convention was callea to
order by Estcvan Baca, chairman
of the county central committee,
who after the reading of the call
exhorted the delegates in vigor
ous and earnest terms to elect a
strong delegation to the terri
torial convention. l emporary
organization was effected by the
election of Estevan Baca chair
man, Conrado A. Baca secretary,
and Nestor P. Eaton interpreter.
A motion then prevailed direct
ing the chairman to appoint three
members for each of tb :;veral
committees. The appointments
were as follows: Committee on
resolutions, M. Cooney, Dr. C.
Cruickshank, José E. Torres;
committee on credentials, Abran
Abeyta, Alejo Gurule, Lorenzo
Vigil; committee on permanent
organization, David Baca, Luis
Candelario, M. Spellman.
After a recess the report of the
committee on credentials was re
ceived and adopted. The report
of the committee on permanent
organization recommended that
the temporary organization be
made permanent and also rec
ommended thj following order of
of business: 1. Report of com
mittee on credentials;' 2. Report
of committee on resolutions; 3.
Election of delegates. The re
port was adopted.
The report ot the committee
on resolutions was read and en
thusiastically adopted as follows:
Resolved, That we most hearti
ly endorse the principles of re
publicanism as set forth in the
platform adopted at the Phila
delphia convention; be it further
Resolved, That we are proud
of the magnificent record made
by our President, Wm. McKinley,
who has at all times met the many
complicated issues in a straight
forward and manly manner, thus
maintaining the high standard
and honor of our nation with the
powers of the world; be it further
Resolved, That we most hearti
ly endorse the administration of
Governor Otero and especially
congratulate his administration

in the history of the organization
of this Territory reduced the
bonded debt of the Territory in
the sum of $44,500 during the
year 1900 and for the general
business-like ana economical
policy which has resulted in
placing the Territory on a casn
basis at home and restored and
strengthened her credit abroad;

Resolved, Thet we endorse the
administration of the territorial
Judiciary as being clean, upright,
and fearless and thus command
ing: the universal respect of all
law-abiding citizens; be it lurther
Resolved, That we most heart
ily endorse our county adminis
tration for their economical man
agement of the affairs of this
county, and especially for the
diligence exercised in the appre
hension of criminals and the
prosecution of crime; be it fur
ther Resolved, That we favor the
nomination of Hon. Solomon
Luna for delegate to congress
and hereby instruct our delega
tion to vote for and urge his
nomination at the coming Terri
torial convention to be held at
Santa Fe on October 3rd, 1900.
Amid enthusiasm that the
chair found great difficulty in
suppressing, the following gen
tlemen were elected to represent
Socorro county at the territorial
convention, viz: C. Cruickshank,
Estevan Baca, A. B. Bacu, Abran
Abeyta, JoseL. Torres, Jas. Mac
Intosh, C Cortinas, and Elfego
Baca.

Dr. Wm. M. Driscoll returned
Friday from Water Canon. He

senger and freight agent of the
Santa re at &i 1'aso, was a visi
tor in Socorro Friday.
Albert Fitch stopped over in
thf citv two or three days this
week on his way to Idaho where
he will take charge of a mine.
V. T, Sanders, who has been
section boss at this station for
several years, has been trans
ferred on account of heart failure
to a station of lower altitude in
Arizona.
Judge A. A. Freeman of Carls
bad is in Washington on a visit,
but expects to be in Santa Fe to
attend the republican territorial
convention on October 3rd. New
Mexican.
Doctor Saylcr went out to

tal work. He failed to connect
with the train that be expected
to come home on, improved the
Yunker's fruit farm, and walked
home early the next morning.
J. J. Leeson is giving free
concerts in English Tuesday and
Friday evenings and in Spanish
Saturday evening of each week.
These concerts are becoming
quite popular.
Died in this city, September
25, 1900, Eliseo, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Cesario Armijo, aged 3
years. 6 months, and 23 days.
Funeral services were conducted
by Rev. M. Matthieson. .
Probate Clerk Hermene G. Baca '
held a special session of probate
court Monday and appointed Juan
Maria Padilla administrator in
bonis non of the estate of Fran
cisco Padilla y Jaramillo.
On account of a holiday our

o'clock p. m. Tuesday, October 2,
until 6:00 o'clock p. m. Wednes
day, October 3.

Matias Baca's 6-year-old boy
fell Thursday and broke an arm
below the elbow. The patient is
under the care of Drs. Blacking
ton, Howell, and Swisher and,
it is safe to presume, is doing
well.
Geo. A. Byron of Kelly, super
intendent of the famous Graphic
mine, registered among the guests
at the Windsor this morning.
Mr. Byron has just returned from
the oil fields of southern Cali
fornia.

castle, to quiet title; Becker &
Franz vs. Leonard Jewell et al,
account.

Octiviano Pcrea, deputy sheriff
of Lincoln county, was in the
city on official business Tuesday.
Mr. Perea stated that there were
several important cases in Lincoln
county awaiting the appointment
of Judge Leland s successor.
Dr. C. G. Cruickshank of San
Marcial is in town today. It is
understood that the Doctor is a
candidate for councilman from
this district and his friends are
justified in believing that he will
be a hard man to beat if nomi
nated. Jas. W. Stevens of Kelly was a
visitor in this city Tuesday. Mr.
Stevens is superintendent of the
Cavern mine. He has just com
pleted a tramway and the recon
struction of the concentrator and
will soon have the mine in run
ning order.
Hon. Chas. A. Leland is now
at his home in Caldwell, Ohio, in
about the same physical condition
as when he left Socorro. The
Judge has determined to spend
the winter in Thomasville,
Georgia, instead of in Asheville,
North Carolina.

Mr. and Mrs. II. O. Bursum
passed through the city last night
southbound. Mrs. Bursum is on
her way to Brownwood, Texas,
to pay a visit to her mother and
her stalwart husband will see her
safely on her way as far as El

Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Browne
celebrated the fourteenth anni
versary of their marriage by
entertaining M. W. Browne and
family and T. B. McNair and
family at dinner yesterday even

Mrs. Winifred Jones, U. S.
commissioner of the court of
claims, is in the city hearing
Indian depredation claims. John
Stansbury, U. S. attorney, Wash
ington, D. C, represents the
government, Elmer E. Veedcr of
Las Vegas appears for claimants,
and George Labadie of Las Vegas
acts as interpreter.
Democratic primaries were held
Monday in Socorro precincts No.
1 and 24 for the election of dele
gates to the county convention
of October 1. In No. 1 the dele
gates elected were Jas. G. Fitch,
Meliton Torres, J. J. Leeson,
Geo. Cook, and M. Armijo. In
No. 24 the delegates elected were
II. M. Dougherty, W. H. Winter,
and Boleslau Pino.
Will Swisher, son of Doctor
and Mrs. Swisher of this city, is
now with company L, 34th U. S.
infantry, under General Funston,
in the northern part of Luzon,

Though the young man is now
in only his nineteenth year he'
went out with Captain,Max Luna
about a year ago. 'He writes his
parents that he is in ;thc 'best of
health and enjoy iig. a -soldier's
life.
Doctor and Mrs. C. G. Duncan
left Tuesday morning for Colo
rado Springs, whither the Doc
tor was summoned to attend a
meeting of the surgeons of the
Santa Fe railroad. He arrived
home yesterday morning. There
were present at the meeting
about 150 persons, a grand ban
quet was given them by the citi
zens of Colorado Springs, and
everybody had a royal good time.
Mrs. Duncan stopped in Las
' Vegas to vjsit friends a few days.
Jas. Macintosh was in the city
today as a delegate to the con
vention. Mr. Macintosh stated
that there has been made this
week an exceedingly rich find of
copper on the Young American
mine. The vein is near the sur
face and six feet wide. Wayne
Russell has a lease on the prop
erty. Hon. J. W. Crumpacker, acting
instead of Hon. Chas. A. Leland,
September 24, in the case of
Frank Andrews vs. the Board of
County Commissioners of Socorro
county, N. M., rendered judg
ment in favor of the plaintiff in
the sum of $717.75 and ordered
execution issued therefor. Also,
likewise, on September 25, in the
case of Wm. G. Gosslin vs. Jas.
Hutchcraft, the court established
by decree the estate of the plaint
iff in the n w s w sec 21 twp,
5 south of range 17 west in the
county of Socorro, and in the
case of Wm. G. Gosslin vs. James
Alford established by decree the
right of the plaintiff in the n e
i n w i sec. 10 twp. 8 south of
range 20 west in the county of So
corro. Thifis the day of San Miguel,
the patron saint of the local
Catholic church. The occasion
was celebrated this morning by
the usual services in the church
and the usual religious procession
from the church around the
plaza and return. Hundreds of
people from the surrounding
country and neighboring villages
joined with local devotees in
these solemn observances. But
the day is also looked upon as
one for a general fiesta. Ten or
a dozen gambling devices were
located around the plaza each
one of which was constantly sur
rounded by an eager crowd of
fortune hunters. The day's fes
tivities will be concluded by a
grand ball in the Garcia opera
house this evening.
J. C. Gibson of Globe, Arizona,
arrived in town Wednesday. He
is a brother of Wm. Lane Gibson,
alias Fred Jenkins, .who was
wounded and captured in the fight
with Deputy Sheriff Foster last
month over on Alma creek. The
prisoner concealed his identity
very carefully until his brother's
arrival. Thursday before Notary
Public C. A. Baca he made a
sworn statemetit of the circum
stances connected with the rob
bing of the He!en Mining Com
pany's store at Graham and with
the fight with Deputy Foster and
his posse near Alma. The state
ment contains nothing new ex
cept that Gibson swears that he
did not know that there was a.
postoflice at the store. He also
tries to place the blame for the
1 raid upon his companions, John
I Ward and Jack Davis, with whom
i he came from Globe into New
México. J. C. Gibson has written
! U. S. Marshal Foraker to know
whether the prisoner cannot be
released on bail.
