LET THE MINORITY HATE REP . HE3ENTATION. There has never. been a time in the ; history of . the ' State. " when - there was deeper interest felt in the. approaching nominating conventions. This is true whether we have reference to the more responsible and honorable and lucrative positions or ' to . the smaller and less profitable oflces. There is an abund ant crop of candidates. We rejoice in this evident interest manifested in pub lic questions and in the eeleetion of aitablo candidates for the positions to be filled. It argues well for the success of the party, in the November elec tions. Unless the people were confident of .victory, they would not be so anxious for .' nominations. Whenever there is a close contest over the nomina ' tions in the Democratic party, there is invariably anjjnjeresting , campaign never any danger of Democratic defeat . in North Carolina. The large number ; of candidates this year is a security against apathy, if we can judge by the ipast Honor and self-respect alike for- wa inac a aereated candidate and his supporters should sulk in their tents. Aside from apathy which is an ever present danger, we see but one danger to Democratic success, and that is ' ? -to; tne. anxiety .". of friends to ecure the nomination v of - their fa voritea, injustice and wrone mav be i done l to minorities, i For example: A ; i man in Cherokee county may desire to ee a oertaln gentleman say Mr. B noninated for Congress. Two-thirds or three-fonrths of the voters may also favor Mr; Ba hpinination, but one-third .orj .'onepurth 'may;" be equally as aniious to secure the nomination of Mr. 0. Now, let ua suppose that in the County Convention a delegate rises and moves that all the delegates be instructed t vote for Mr. B for Congress, and the motion is carried by a majority vote iOAlNBT THf PEOTXST OF THE OHI THIRD OH ONI-FOURTH who faVOr Mr. O. Is this right? Has not a great .wrong been done to the minority! And lm there any excuse or palliation for itt . We think not . We believe that everr , Democratic voter has a right to register us opinion, and that this right is as sa cred when be isjn the minority as 5, whe:ne 14 .the msjority. The Democrats of Cherokee, in this supposed ! s ciae, ought to have asoertained the rela tive strength of T the two candidates, and divided the delegates to the nominating convention in that proportion. .This is the only fair way of doing equal and exact justice and nothing except equal and exact justice is truly Democratic. v -er Vftke county Democrats have wisely adopted the , rule , of giving to very candidate, the strength in the nominating conventions to which he is entitled. r Two years ago there was a close fight in the Wake county convention over the gubernatorial candidates. A majority of the delegates were for Capt. S. B. AtMANpaa, but a very strong minority 1 '?.Ton QovMNoa Fowix There .was a . feeling .'among, some of the apporters of Aixxandxb to carry a mo- Uoa inatructing.all the delegates to sup f port bint for Governor. This would ' been jgrpssly iin just and unfair to .p Gov. FowWs supporters. Wiser ooun- :. u prevailed, and the vote of the county was divided upon a basis of the strength of the two candidates. . The rights of the minority were respected as fully as were i the rights : of the majority. Every lua left that convention feeling that he r hid bet treited fairly. -;;JM ka established lor itself a pre cwfeat of Bight and Justice. . The Chbomoijs hopes to se the day when vill Iw allowed minority representation, will be allowed iu every county and in every township. Failure1 to guarantee that tight is the chief danger, as we see it, to Democratic ,Ie.r.tio success. THEN AND NOW. Under Democratic rule in the United KhntAii dnrinr the first half a, cpntnrv. all person's policy of special privileges to .mm m none, tne iarmers prospered equally with the business men and artizans. The "era" was one of continued "good feel ing," and was aptly described by the old lines on Borne: 'Then none was for a patty; Then all were for the state; Then the great man helped the poor; And the poor man loved the great; Then the lands were fairly portioned; Then spoils were fairly sold; The Romans were like brothers In the brave days of old. But during the past quarter of a cen tury, under Bepublican rule, special privileges have been granted to a class. They have grown rich at the expense ' -i i i il. ana impoverisument oi iue many uuui the words of the old Roman poem are again applicable: Now Roman is to Roman More hateful than a foe, And the Tribunes dare the high, And the Fathers grind the low!" THEY WILL NEVER DO IT. (Statesville Landmark.) We do not share the apprehension of some, that the staid, thinking farmers of North Carolina will allow themselves to be led off by a man who comes down here from Pennsylvania, assumes to put himself at the head of the farmers of this State and advises them to disregard the color line and to turn their backs on ail those candidates for their favor ex cept the few whom he may name to them as fit to be trustedl Our people are essentially homogeneous. They have lived here together from the beginning, following their va rious avocations and cultivating the spirit of fraternity and good neighbor hood one man being as good as another so long as he behaved himself. We need now no crusader coming among us to sow strife; to teach that some one class or another is a people all apart to itself, the enemy of every other class and every other class its enemy. The farmers of North Carolina will not enlist under this new banner, in the hands f o one un known to them, until they get ready to belie all the traditions of their fore fathers.
